Annotating is a new thing for me but I'm really enjoying it. I used to be so careful with my books and keep them looking brand new. I have anxiety disorder, panic disorder and OCD so I actually started annotating so that I could challenge my OCD in particular, and my first book I annotating was Turtles All The Way Down by John Green, which is about anxiety and OCD, and it was a very personal and emotional reading experience. I like to highlight, underline and sometimes use sticky notes. I'm still getting comfortable with writing.
I think it's fantastic to find what works best for you and I've also found that the way I annotate has changed the more comfortable I get with the process. I'm so happy you've started to own and personalize your books instead of worrying about keeping them like new. Books deserved to be loved.
I looooove this. I am so obsessed with seeing how people annotate. I remember in school when we had to do book annotations and people were so annoyed with it but I'm just here like, "Shit - this is my idea of fun 😂😝". I really really like using color coded page flags so the tabs stick out and make a rainbow. It soothes my eyeballs 😍
eyeball soothing is essential, then! I feel like I may eventually get to that place but I want it to stay fun and for me, just using whatever color and underlining super floats my boat. :D I'm so happy you enjoyed it. Everyone requested it but I was terrified they'd hate it. lol
I annotate pretty similarly. I underline and make notes. I also highlight, different colors have different meanings. Yellow for general quotes, pink for lines that made me laugh, and blue for parts that made me cry. I love how personal annotating is. I can't wait to read some books again years from now and see if I feel the same way about them.
Thank you! I am glad you found value in the video. I'm new to it and not nearly as detailed as some people when it comes to tabbing but I'm happy with the way it works for me.
Thx for sharing this. I have never done this but I am looking to start doing it this year. Especially with books that I’m really looking forward to reading. I always thought it was so much more than just tabbing your favorite quotes / parts of the story
You're super welcome. I think you'd really enjoy it. It's whatever works for you, but it's so much fun to mark up passages, quotes, or plot that you love. Then you can go back as a writer and look at what you love most in books and implement it into your own. Win/win.
This video is awesome. It's awesome to see how people do their own thing. It would be interesting to see at the end of the year how many books you ended up annotating. Thanks for sharing.
I could never annotate my books and I admire you for being able to do it! I only do my school books because thats a must and I mainly just highlight it!
I never thought I could do it, but once I started it was so much fun I know I'll always want to. It does take a tiny bit more time but I like slowing down to really think about what I'm reading while I annotate.
Very cool, thanks for sharing. If you aren't good at drawing, you could use stickers. I've found Dollar Tree has some nice kind of transparent colored arrow tabs that I've been thinking about writing on. I've only used tabs in the past and then removed them once I had reviewed a book but would like to do something more permanent for some of my favorites. Thanks for the ideas, I especially like the bracket thing and tips on pens.
I decided that I want to start annotate my books. Haven't started yet because I am trying to still decide what method I am going to use. Love your video!!!
I have switched up my method a tiny bit...I put a post it note in the beginning of my books with the color code for the tabs (yellow for plot, red for romance, orange for quotes-just as an example). That's been fun so that I better find specific things within my annotations.
Pages and Pens I am just starting to do a book today. I still can't decide on two colors, I regards to how I am going to use them. Those colors are yellow and orange. Blue is going to be for character description, because I am awful at remembering what a character looks like. Pink is going to be romantic things, and green is going to be for quotes because that's my favorite color. I guess that's a weird reason but it just felt like the right fit!!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! I’ve been wanting to try this out because there’s so many times when I know I love a book and after reading several after that I tend to forget a lot! So it would be nice to be able to flip back to all the things I love to help me remember! This video was really helpful! Although I’m a little nervous about writing in the book, I can definitely see the benefits!!! Thanks again!!!
I want to get better at annotating books as I read them. I feel like it will be a better way for me to review the book. I guess I've just never even thought about doing before booktube. I remember I always highlighted or underlined stuff in my school books, so it's just a matter of making it a habit again.
I don't know why I don't annotate when I read fiction. I have done it pretty often with non-fiction... but I should totally start doing it for fiction books too! Super cool that you keep up with it pretty regularly!
You absolutely should give it a try. I ADORE it. Once you do it becomes a bit addictive and I like that it's just a habit now. Plus, it makes reviews a lot easier. lol
I'll tab my books occasionally but haven't start annotating yet. I'll probably try it someday! Thanks for sharing your process this was awesome - - Rebecca
I adore outlander. I’ve read two times in six months lol I annotate that same way. If I run out of the colour tag that I’m using I just use a different one lol. If I really love the book it turns into a rainbow type thing. I love showing that on my bookstagram. And I use a pen that I got for free from work lol.
Free pens for the win! I am not picky, I just personally am a snob for the Sarasa in all my writing. It's like the only pen I use so of course, I use them for annotating, too. I'm glad you found something that worked for you.
omg writing it books killllls me i have really only done it to my copy of Frankenstein because I just ended up making fun of the main character a lot in the margins lol I am a color-coded tabber so it's always interesting to see how other people do annotations.
I know it's not for everyone, but I love it so much. I never thought it would make me this happy to see my notes in a book, but it really does bring me satisfaction to flip through and see all my thoughts at a glance. The color-coded tabs are absolutely a great option, whether you also write in the book or not, I just can't get that organized. lol.
Some times its good to annotate because when your reading.. and you dont know a word or what it means you can underline it and write what it means in the margin. So its good that way. I have at least 3 packs of tabs. :)
I don't think I could ever mark up a brand new book tbh... I have done it on secondhand books tho. I suggest using a erasable colored pencils (ie Pilot Eno) and post its if you're like me and don't like permanent marks or making mistakes that you can't erase...
You totally could! DO IT!! I don't know. I never thought I could annotate and now I adore doing it. I get such pleasure in knowing they're full of my snarky remarks. haha. Good call on the erasable, though I don't mind making mistakes in pen--it's my book after all and I know I'm not perfect. ;)
Do you give away books you annotate? I always want to do it but not sure if people want a book that has been marked up, should you decide to donate the book.
hmmmmm. So most second-hand places that you can sell back to will not take annotated books. I always thought it would be cool to give as a gift though so that people you love and want to gift with a favorite book can have your thoughts while they read. So maybe I would do that. :D
@@PagesandPens cool cool, i was thinking of annotating one or two of my books.. as you say you can write down your thoughts and feelings on the page and... would you use high lighters for the paragraphs etc. 😀

That's one of the best parts of annotating - when you re-read it is such a richer experience. I'm so excited you found what works for you.
This is kinda random but I really appreciate how to the point you are in your videos
Not random at all. Thank you so much, that means a lot to me!
Loved seeing how other people annotate their books. I am always curious when booktubers hold up tabbed books.
Thank you! I am glad you found value in the video. I'm new to it and not nearly as detailed as some people when it comes to tabbing but I'm happy with the way it works for me.

I annotate pretty much the same way. When I first started annotating my books I was obsessed, some of books have a tab on almost every page.
I definitely calmed down with the tabbing. I really enjoy the underlining and comments in the margins more than the tabs.
I am honestly so bad at annotating by books, and I've made it a goal to annotate by books more this year. I am so happy you posted this!
I'm so happy that you enjoyed the video and hopefully, it helps. :)

I love this! I'm basically a highlighting FIEND.
I should get the page safe highlighters. Would probably make more sense. I DO have a staples gift card...hmmm. lol

Ouu loved this video!! I love seeing how people annotate there books :)
I LOVE annotating and am stoked if I can encourage anyone else to try it. Thanks, Julia.
This is so useful! thank you.

That's exactly what it is. That, and getting over wanting to be pristine with your books. It's so much fun once you get into it, though.
Loved this video! The only book I’ve annotated is one that I had to read for school so I want to try and annotate my own!
So happy you enjoyed it. :D I think you'll enjoy annotating books for fun WAY more than school textbooks.

Awesome. I'm so glad you found something that works for you.
I like to annotate I just never do for some odd reason. I liked seeing how you do it though, Great video!

Oh, Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies to this day. I keep trying to get my daughter to watch it, but the goblins scare her!
I mean-that's fair. I seriously do love it, though. It will always be a favorite.
I am way too lazy to annotate 😂
Oh come on!! I believe in you.
I tab my books, and take notes on an post it app. But, I can’t write in my books. I end up repurchasing the book if I ever tried to write in it.
At least you tried, though. And hey, you found what works for you!
5:52 - LOL sorry! not funny! But SO funny. Thanks for sharing; fun video.
I was totally honest, I have NO drawing ability. lol

Not even a little bit. I'm making them mine, full of my thoughts and feelings, and sometimes those are messy but mostly they're just beautiful.
