A way of annotating I use is using a different colour highlighter for different types of information, although I’m far too precious about my books to highlight them, so it’s usually for handouts!
    Yellow: A quote
    Orange: A person or text
    Green: An example
    Pink: Key words or ideas
Blue: Any idea that needs further research

oh yeah yeah fair point I forgot about handouts

I do the same thing but my highlights are different but I also highlight/write in all of my books. Mine is a bit different as one of the categories is based on something my 12th grade English teacher had us do over the summer called a Dialectical Journal, if you don't know, it's basically a notebook where you put in quotes you like and have opinions on and then write your opinions, I used it to rant lol. You can look that up and get a better explanation if you're interested.
      Green: Dialectical Journal Quotes
      Orange: Quotes I like
Yellow: Words I like (or don't know)
      Pink: Questions
      Blue: Annotations

Your friendly neighborhood librarian begging that you *please* do not annotate a library book even with pencil. We have to erase every single mark by hand. Or if the book is too damaged, delete it from the collection.

    • @Sleerogue
      @Sleerogue 3 года назад +10

I don’t do this, but if a person erases it themselves is that okay?

@@Sleerogue Hello there. My personal opinion is just don't write in things that don't belong or you. The book belongs to the library and it's a privilege that you get to borrow it and your responsibility to take care of it when you have it. If you want to annotate a book, purchase a copy for yourself (be that 2nd hand or new).

I am totally with you on this. I just can't write in a book, not even my OU text books as they were so beautiful and I wanted to refer to them again and wouldn't want to see my notes . I used Post it notes in my own books and had a piece of paper for when I borrowed a Library book and saw something I wanted to write. It makes me cry inwardly to see books damaged in this way 😭😭

  • @_taranjot

I adore this!!! I kind of hate how most annotating I see online requires 15 highlighters and colour coded sticky notes, when a straight-up pen is clear, makes re-reading so much easier, and looks great. I also love how you focused a lot more on the intention behind your annotations and thinking like an active reader rather than just the aesthetic, that's the important bit after all!

For library or borrowed books I use translucent or fully clear post-its, and just pull them out before returning them, to not create any extra work for librarians or friends (and sometimes keep the notes). (Also a pale grey highlighter for books changed my life tbh)

Showing your actual annotated books, in your video, was extremely helpful. I learned a lot; thank you. The Cute but Psycho t-shirt was nice touch. Also, your selective use of profanity was totally appropriate and is a good mnemonic device.

While it is pretty bad to annotate/put any markings in a library book, because the librarians either have to erase them or replace the book, or everyone who gets the book after you has to deal with someone's annotations; but I found it hilarious when I read a copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and someone had numbered/marked every single time a character cried 😆 21 times!

I want to annotate my books but I am sort of too lazy to do so and also don't find a reason to do it since I don't study language/literature (anymore). I also feel to dumb since I haven't read many classics, otherwise you'd be able to see more connections between different novels. However, I do annotate more when I read non-fiction because that makes me think and reflect more. So do you also annotate when you're just reading for pleasure?

To be honest I had no idea what annotating was. And I’ve been doing that for a long time. Naturally I always read a book with a pen in my hand and I obsessively use sticky’s for my favorite parts. When I read fiction I just highlight. I use to have a learning disability but that practice helps me retain knowledge.

To start, Love in The Time of Cholera, Things Fall Apart, Dante's Inferno, Modest Proposal, The Sixteen Satires, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Native Son, Madame Bovary, Hamlet, Everything I Never Told You, and Short Stories by Latin American Women: The Magic and the Real. These are some of the most enriching texts that come up a lot in future readings. Also, hone in on mythology and philosophy as in the course when going over classics those will be the fuel of the themes to identify in the texts.
