  • Another Great Trek seeing some lovely sites, join me on this little day out.
This trail leads you around to northern part of the Ladybower Reservoir, a beautiful Y-shaped reservoir in the Upper Derwent Valley. It offers captivating views across its tranquil waters, surrounding woodlands, vast moorland hills, and the remarkable Ashopton Viaduct.
The construction between 1935 and 1943 required the flooding of the village of Derwent and Ashopton, with the displaced inhabitants finding a new home just downstream of the Ladybower Dam. When the water level is dramatically low, some remnants of the village can still be seen.
Starting from the Bridge End Car Park on the western banks, follow the path tracing the water’s edge, heading south. As you make your way along, enjoy the spectacular views across the water with the iconic Derwent Edge behind it-a captivating Millstone Grit escarpment situated east of the Ladybower Reservoir, overlooking the Upper Derwent Valley.
Eventually, you’ll reach the Ashopton Viaduct, which you’ll cross to continue the trail on the eastern banks. Follow the bridleway and then road all the way to the northern end of Ladybower. Here, you’ll pass the Fairholmes Visitor Centre and will have the opportunity to detour to the adjacent Derwent Reservoir just north of here.
At the western end of the Derwent Dam, you’ll find the Monument to the Dambusters, serving as a reminder of the area being used to practice the Dambuster Raid in the Second World War, with these dams being similar to German ones.
A little further is the Memorial to Tip, which stands as a touching tribute to a loyal sheepdog named Tip, who faithfully accompanied shepherd Joseph Tagg, even after Tagg lost his life on Howden Moor. For an astonishing 105 days, Tip stayed by his side until they were found.
From the Fairholmes car park, follow the path through the woodland along the banks of Ladybower Reservoir back to the car park.
