I got one far worse. After the first dance I out on a dance tune and the bride and groom called out the wedding party and they literally ran in terror to dance in public, so they danced with their two kids. Then the best man dumped a bucket of water on the groom and everybody started folding tables. One song after the first dance and it was over. They gave me kind words on line “He gave us everything we asked for” but gave me 4 out of five stars. All the rest of my reviews have been 5. Had another country crowd that did not know how to dance and just wanted slow sad country music. Heaven forbid I play Frank Sinatra’s for the great grandmother and got the ire of the bride “country only”

That's my dream job. I love older crowds and alcohol free events. I just play older music and facilitate the event I have. Sometimes, our job is to simply play enjoyable tunes at a volume that facilitates them catching up and having enjoyable conversation. It's not always to fill a dance floor. Sometimes we're paid more to set our egos aside and simply serve without turning their nice family event into a banger.

I had a homecoming dance on 10/20. I had been looking forward to it. I've done their last 3 homecomings, I know the kids (because I also do quince choreographies) and I know they can get hype. So imagine my grand disappointment when it turned out to be the worst dance ever. I was so bummed. I tried changing genres, I tried hyping them up. I even stopped the music and told them "I see you looking around waiting for someone else to be brave enough to step out on the dance floor. If you're waiting for that, it's not gonna happen." The teachers cheered me on. They were even asking kids what they wanted to hear and nothing. A couple weeks later, I crossed paths with one of the seniors at an unrelated function and she asked me what I thought about the homecoming dance and all I could do was shake my head. She laughed and said "I definitely agree with you." She said it wasn't me. She thinks it's because of the few kids that did go, none of them really knew how to dance. It helped me feel a little better but I'm still bummed about it. I did have a fall festival the week after. It wasn't even a dance, I was just playing music as background and it turned out to be more hype than the hoco dance. My friend was like "see? it's not you. It's just the crowd." Still sucks though.

If no one is dancing I have great luck by asking an outgoing person to please take requests for me. I bring a notebook along for that just in case that happens. Then I follow the lead of the requests. The Era. The genre.. and the artists they like. It dials me right in!! Works every time!

I've been in that situation brother... that is one of the things about mobile DJs that sometimes gets me down. I've been in a rut my last three gigs it's gotten me a bit down on it. Dj'ed in the early 90's...small town in Oklahoma....had a crowd of 200, majority was over the age of 60+...I was under orders ONLY PLAY HEAVY METAL, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE AM I TO DEVIATE. Serious, the bride and groom's dance was G&R November rain...absolutely horrible

I had the exact same thing happen to me in the 90's up here in Nova Scotia Canada. I was in a small town DJing in the middle of no where and the B and G only wanted heavy metal. The only ones who partied were the bridal party. It sucked but they were happy.

I wouldn't care one bit as long as I got paid. I don't think it's the DJ's job to be the "entertainer" more than just a person who provides music and a sound system. But I do think it's the mobile DJ's job to be somewhat of a music aficionado who can pull out music from any time period to suit the situation throughout all times and genres. Playing EDM at that gig would most definitely not work so I would take a look at the people and try to judge their musical preferences based on age, race, culture, location ect. I think that's the DJ's real job and not trying to force incompatible music for a specific kind of crowd.

Maybe a song or two, but I was supposed to play till 12 and was on the road by 10! I felt bad because I charged them full price! So I felt bad afterwards and gave them a pretty wedding gift, which they loved! More less you can't expect everything to be baller, but you gotta make the best of it!

Thats a tough one! We had a gig a couple weeks ago that was similar. It was an early afternoon wedding vow renewal with no alcohol for what appeared to be church folk. They barely danced and it seemed like we were just there to jukebox. They sang along, but didnt really do much dancing either. You're gonna have those kinds of gigs every once in a while, not much you can do about it i think.

John, you will get customer like this. I have been a Club DJ, House DJ and now a Mobile DJ and there is no perfect event from start to finish. You have to make the most of what you have and like you said...ask for feedback. I have done 4-hour gigs and events and the host stiffed me on pay. Should they need my entertainment services again, well I am demanding full pay up front. If most people knew what a Mobile DJ has to do and prepare for an event they would gladly appreciate their services. Cabot is just up the road from me and maybe we can connect sometime. Don't get discouraged...KEEP ON MOVING. I hope this helped.

Damn. That's tough. I'm pretty much a newbie (I'm sitting on like a years worth of video footage I haven't went through). I just started doing a combination of clubs, bars, and mobile and I learned to try and be indifferent about the situations. When I do good and have the floor packed, I try not to get too excited and try to keep the energy going. When it's empty, I try to pull them out but I learned not to panic. When I first started, i used to get a "sinking ship / drowning " feeling when I couldnt get people to dance, I would panic and it would get worse and worse. Now I just try and keep going and it is what it is. Great advice on the reviews, I'm a have to remember that.

I had that situation before back in November. The wedding that afternoon. It was a beautiful day and the temperature was just right but a little windy. The reception was that evening on an outside deck with a fire pit. The party was supposed to start after dinner. But after dinner the temperature dropped quickly to around 40 degrees and the wind picked up. People were complaining about the cold and wind so they started to leave. The ones who stayed wanted to see the Alabama football game on the big screen outside. The groom apologize and thanked me then paid me the full amount. I packed up and left. It ended about 3 hours early.

I've done several things in the past. 1. Always look like you're enjoying yourself no matter what (yeah I know, thanks Captain Obvious). 2. I'll go around table to table, introduce myself and ask if there is anything I can play for them. (Great advice from a great friend RIP DJ Big Easy) 3. Start with the kids, if there are any, grab them and teach them a dance or two. 4. Be careful with this one but if you can pull it off its quite fun, cope with sarcasm. For example: "Wow we've got a lively crowd tonight, everyone make some noise!", "I can't hear you!" or put on the YMCA and say "Here's one you can do sitting down in your seats" and go sit at a table with them and do the YMCA. Now none of these may work but people will see you making an effort and that's all that counts. Great videos! Keep them coming, love your energy. -DC

I totally feel you on this. As a mobile DJ or DJ in general we love to see a packed dance floor, but unfortunately that isn't always the case. Early on when I started mobile DJaying and I would come across a lame crowd, I would freak out like "why aren't they dancing?". I've come to learn that contrary to popular belief, it isn't the DJ that makes the party it's the crowd. You can spin the greatest songs ever made but if the crowd is simply a non-dancing crowd then theu just aren't going to budge. Here's a tip, when this happens and you see that it's a 50+ kinda crowd, spin slow songs, hasn't failed me yet and at least you get some people on the dance floor.

woo....that crowd is usually the ones that start things off in my culture. Start with ballroom, standards, line dances, and then bring on the younger kids music. I'm in the 40-50 crowd, and we usually get out and dance first. We usually have alcohol, and are a dancing type of family/culture. Tough stuff, man. I don't doubt you did what you needed to do, I'll chalk it up to a the crowd. I've been at some weddings where we saved the DJ's gig and party because we were out to have fun. Too bad there were no party people there.

Sometimes you just have a crowd of lemons and you can't make lemonade. lol. The funny thing is when you have a crowd like the one that you're talking about that just doesn't dance despite the fact that you're doing similar, if not the same thing(s) that you did to much success, rave reviews, and packed dance floors at your previous 10 events! I will disagree with you about 1 thing though. I wouldn't just give up on trying to get people up and dancing when the dance floor isn't jumping. After 20+ years of doing this I've developed any number of "tricks" to accomplish this. Yes, there is that fine line of being entertaining and being cheesy but knowing that line comes with experience. I also have a LONNNG & detailed conversation with my wedding clients prior to the event where I go over some of the things that I do to get people up and dancing if they need that push. Depending on how you word that conversation most B & G's will be happy to go along with you on that. If they are dead set against any crowd interaction, well then you do what you can and if the gig flops you can always justify to yourself that your hands were tied and it's not your fault. I had a groom years ago that was incredibly controlling. So much so that he told me that he didn't want me to say a WORD on the mic other than introductions and necessary announcements. He also gave me a list of songs (which sucked) that covered the entire event that he insisted I not deviate from. Well 1/2 way through the gig and after NOBODY danced to his crappy music he came up to me with his head hung low and said that I should use my discretion to make the dance floor happen. Boom.....the 2nd 1/2 of the wedding was awesome! Good luck & good gigs!!
