    Sorry to see this happen to you guys, I was able to meet you in Virginia and talk for a little bit. I actually build Cat engines and high performance Cat engines for a living. Most of the time when a Cat blows a head gasket it is because the liners have got low in the block. The head gasket crush is determined by the height of the liner above the spacer plate which needs to be at least .005" to .006". To correct it the liners have to be pulled and the block counterbored. The larger cam lobe is for the injectors and is that way because of the tremendous load on the roller building pressure in the injector. If you just need to put a head gasket on it to get going it will last for a while but should be checked out more when you all have some time. I wish I was closer I would help you out. I'd love to build you a nice high perf Cat in the off season. Hope all goes well.

    • @ruds2600
      @ruds2600 Год назад

      I thought on a Cat, the liners set on the top deck?

    • @WrightFamilyRacing2021
      @WrightFamilyRacing2021 Год назад +1

      @@ruds2600 They do sit on top of the deck then you have a spacer plate and metal gasket between the plate and block the fits around the liner flanges and is sandwiched between the head and block. Without the plate you would basically have a 1/4" gap between the head and block when you set the head on. This is on all 3300, 3400 and c15 series engines. To check liner protrusion you drop the liners in put the plate and gasket on and use bolts with a fiber and brass washer to hold everything down, then take a dial indicator on a sled and check how far they are above the top of the spacer. This determines your head gasket crush among other things. I have thought about doing a video with a step by step build on one of these engines, alot of the videos I have seen skip stuff that I consider critical in building a high performance diesel that is reliable.

    • @ruds2600
      @ruds2600 Год назад

      @@WrightFamilyRacing2021 You counter bore that top deck that does not have one, and then shim that liner?

    • @timcamerl9140
      @timcamerl9140 Год назад

      Do u think the wires would have been the problem first or the injector burned up

    • @WrightFamilyRacing2021
      @WrightFamilyRacing2021 Год назад +2

      @@ruds2600 When you counterbore it you are actually cutting a groove in the top of the block itself and using a stainless shim to achieve your desired liner height. I usually start out with a 9Y3368 shim. Most of the time that will clean them up unless they have been cut before or the block is in bad shape. Cat makes a ton of different size shims.

    As a x over the road owner operator, this brings my stress level up just watching.
    This is what over the road truck owner operators go thru all the time.
    Shady shops, mystery mark up on parts, "it should be fine" repairs etc.
    Sitting and sleeping in weird shop parking lots etc/
    This is why I started a heavy tow company, and learners over the years to work on my own stuff as much as possible...to help guys like this get towed to the right shops and not pay an arm and a leg.
    So far the universe and the trucking gods have smiled upon me. I wish someone like my would of got ahold of you and towed you to a reputable shop for a reasonable rate. You could of got repaired right in record time.
    Sorry about your luck.
    On the bright side, you don't own a def or region emissions truck. You think your bill was bad? Imagine a emmmisons system that cost 15k on a engine with 800k miles that's about to pop. Those are some sad days.

    So when you have had your hands in as many Cat engines that a experienced Diesel Mechanic have. Where the hardware goes isn't a issue. Why?? Because most of these kits come with new hardware (At least the Rebuild kits we use on our C-15's)
    And as for the Diagnosis, With the injector wiring harness being the root cause. Yes, That can and has caused this kind of catastrophic failure. And $4-K to $6-K for a complete head is NOT a bad price. Our last aftermarket Cat head cost us almost $10-K. You'll be fine, Ive seen worse getting repaired in a Walmart parking lot. At least you aren't in the lower end of this engine. That's where it gets really EXPENSIVE. Doing a in-frame today STARTS at $30-K for OEM Cat parts. And can exceed $40-K. What ppl forget is these Cat Engines are NO LONGER being made. Thanks to Obama and his EPA Regulations.

  • @91CTD
    @91CTD Год назад +1

    I have overhauled about 25 of those 3406E engines. CAT makes a thinner spacer plate that goes between the head & the block, the thinner spacer plate helps you achieve good cylinder liner protrusion WITHOUT removing the liners and machining the liner counter bores.
    I really hope the mechanic checked liner protrusion correctly before he put the head on, liner protrusion should be at least .002, .006 is much better for longevity though

I’d always use old cardboard to put bolts or pushrods in order. Nothing worse than hunting around like you just dropped. The best place to get heads is American premium castings, Vancouver, Washington. I have been a cat man for many years and yes, cracked heads or blown head gasket or a common problem usually because when people rebuild motors, they don’t set the sleeve protrusion correctly on each cylinder and of course they ordered the wrong spacer plate for said head gasket or protrusion. A lot of people forget to do the lower part of the sleeve protrusion also but under normal circumstances, there’s no beating a Caterpillar. They don’t get the best fuel economy, but my truck is like yours, not built for fuel economy

    Hello Shawn. Have you ever watched "Wheeler Dealers"? On the 1st episode of season 17 they rebuilt a 1995 Ford Escort RS Cosworth. The designer talked about how he tried to get the Ford to put 3 wing sort of things on the Escort but Ford only 2 instead of the 3. I feel like going on, but I would go on forever. You should see the episode for yourself. Really you need to watch it. Sincerely Yours Zach.

    We have alot of Cat Engines,had a 1.3 megawatt gen set blow up right after taking readings,200 hours on it! The rod and piston ended up on the floor along with 30 gallons of oil and 200 gallons of coolant! Wish I could post the pics on here! We have had several failures of this type!

    Red= emergency line.... Blue= service line. Semi trailers have airbreaks and with no air connected to them they are 100% completely applied and locked. This is in case the trailer becomes detached or the truck loses air pressure. Same thing is true for the airbreaks on the semi itself. The only exception is for systems that have air over hydraulic which is not a super great system it's usually used on smaller trailers. Also when semi trailers are moved around without air u have to have a cageing tool instaled to the brake pods that disengage the Brakes. Usually this tool is attached to theclamp that goes around the cage.

      Yes there was a lot of wasted time. Me and my team counld have took the hole engine down in that amount of time. The longest part of any of this would have been getting the new head and parts to go back together.. But a good shop would have a guy ordering parts as they come off. After inspection. They seen him coming with his 1/2 million dollar rig and trailer. Plus I'm pretty sure they knew who he was.

    Every owner operator out there feels your pain. They are one dropped valve away from going out of business. A in-frame along with a big ass tow bill and you are out 50k. Add a couple of weeks with zero revenue and unless you have a lot saved up or great credit you are done.

    On the merch trailer if you have to replace the axle you should do what I did with mine and replace it with an 8000lb 8-lug trailer axle. I did mine years ago and never had another issue, and I think it's because I now have dual 8000lb axles instead of dual 3500lb axles, and I never haul more than like 7000-8000lbs. So I have more axle than I really need, so they're never close to being stressed.

    You can be a little sloppy when rebuilding one of these, but it’s a problem when you aren’t 100% sure you remember where every part, bolt and gasket goes. Sounds like he reused the exhaust gaskets which is shady. And for you to have oil leaks means either seals didn’t get replaced or they weren’t installed or torqued correctly. On top of that, for him to charge you $32k for a head job is RIDICULOUS. He literally took advantage of you in every aspect. Like you mentioned, you can get an overhaul from the dealership for that price
