The Hypocrisy of TradWives and How to Actually Protect Your Finances

  • The "TradWives" movement has grown exponentially over the last year, with content popping up all over mainstream media, Instagram, and TikTok. TradWife videos themselves may be hashtagged #tradwife...but the “link in profile” betrays a different story.
These women aren’t actually financially submissive at all. In fact, many of them are making bank. But this runs in direct opposition to one of the hallmarks of the TradWife ethos: a glamorized financial subordination to a male partner.

I just wanted to say, those of us who are stay at home moms don’t just completely rely on our husbands for financial security. I have a nest egg I saved myself, we also have a prenuptial agreement in place. I also have a degree and experience under my resume. No one should ever quit their job for any reason without a back up plan. That’s just not very smart.

I feel so conflicted whenever I watch content on this topic. As a stay at home, homeschooling mother for over three decades, it feels like social media has pathologized normal, maternal behaviors that have been intrinsic to our species since the dawn of time. Rather than receiving the admiration that I once did for my life choices, all I hear today is politicized ideation of who I am from people who have never lived my life and truly have no idea what my life has been like. It’s surreal.

Every time I hear people talk about being a trad wife I think of two people I used to know as cautionary tales that you always have to be able to take care of yourself. The first woman was a stay at home mom who had two kids with a man she was in a relationship with. After 12 years together, he decided that he was no longer fulfilled by this relationship and moved out and left her alone with no job, two kids, and a house payment she could not afford without his income.
The second woman was married to a man who made a good living in construction while she worked as a waitress part time while raising their two kids under 8. While the family was on a summer vacation they were in a car wreck and, unfortunately, she was left as a single parent with two kids with one of the kids in the hospital for months. Even if you pick the right man, you cannot control the future, so you have to be able to take care of yourself and your kids.

There is a very negative stereotype for women who decide to not work outside the home. My wife and I made this decision very early because we wanted our children to be raised with our values - by us. My wife as a stay at home mom has a much more important role than I do because we place the most value on the upbringing of our children. We made this decision when we had a very low income. Very low, below the so called poverty line. Again, we prioritize our children over things. I do believe families are better off when one of the parents stays home. This can be either the father or the mother. Most 2 income families are all about 2 incomes because they want to buy more stuff.

I love my tradwife so much! We live the traditional lifestyle and it works great.
Funny how the feminist anti-trad people never ever ever EVER seem to complain about "tradmen" who get married and then give 100% of their time, 100% of their money, attention, energy, toward their wife, home, family, kids, stressing and anxious always about how to give her more, and get her all the stuff she wants. I never hear ladies upset at the deal he's getting.
No ladies ever seem to think this is a bad deal for the tradmen. But they are quick to poopoo the tradwife position, who doesn't have to worry about all that and can focus on building a nice home for them and eventually perhaps have kids added to the mix.
If you live your whole marriage worried there is a divorce coming tomorrow and you spend your time and resources and tactical preparation for it, then you can pretty much guarantee you are writing your own script and will eventually get there by self-actualization.

I really think it’s not funny. Especially if someone got a divorce because of this. They are lying to women and making women day dream about their lives. However, I’m worried they are misguiding people from Christians and making it seem like their lives are perfect. When in reality Christians face alot of difficulties. It’s ok to be a stay at home mom. However, you and your partner should plan accordingly to it. Also, maybe you’ll be home for a short time. However, we aren’t in the 1800s economy anymore. It will be very difficult. Especially with a huge family. I think modern day America is very different and the new generation is struggling with it. I do think it’s important for moms to stay home with their kids as it was supposed to be traditionally. The main point is these women are making bank out of there platforms. That’s how they lure you selling you the unattainable. A lot of them are good actors I would say.

So because a wife works from home she's not a trad wife? And you definitely don't understand how these marriages work. We don't need permission to leave the house, we don't get an "allowance" or are denied access to the bank accounts. That's not how a healthy marriage works. Just because some of the relationships are like you describe doesn't mean that they ALL are. And frankly it's insulting that feminist say women have the choice to be what they want to be EXCEPT if it's a traditional wife.
