    reminder: do not dump your used solvents down the drain! i don't throw mine out at all, i reuse. leave the used solvent in a big jar, and over the course of a day or two all the paint will settle to the bottom and the stuff on top is clear again!

      I was thinking of what happens if I mix the solvent and oil together as the medium... and different layers require different ratio of solvent and oil?

      always layer from thin to fatty...more oil in top layers...never less oil there...to avoid cracking over drying time.

    Lena, I know you get this all the time but I wanted to express how much you have helped me get back into painting and sketching. I have recently gone through a great deal of trauma and as a result I have severe depression; the problem with having depression is that you don't feel like doing anything because you convince yourself that you aren't capable anymore. Your videos have helped me see what it's like to have passion again and I'm learning to love the laborious process of making a final painting and all of the steps involved, just by watching you have fun painting and sketching. You are always so humble and patient with your explanations and a true joy to watch. You have so much talent, but beyond that I feel like you're just an incredible human being all around. I can just tell that you have a lovely, kind soul :). I always look forward to watching your videos, so keep up the great work and I wish you a very happy new year. xx Lots of love from Canada.

    Be careful to have amazing ventilation. Even odorless thinners have a ton of fumes, just less smell. Also remember paint rags (something you use to clean your brushes of oil and solvent) are combustible.

    I am used to the acrylic painting, however I got annoyed by how incredibly fast it dried. And yes I really wanted to blend on canvas. So I am excited and a tiny bit intimidated by the mediums but I like fun and I am going to do this. I mostly drew with pencil growing up and my dad did pencil, colored pencil, and some painting and so I think I'm following the same path. Maybe that's normal for every artist. But when I painted, I realized I could also paint. It blew my mind. So I wanted to do more. I am an artist at heart. It's my God-given talent! I love your videos. You explain things clearly. Thank you

    I guess I should look into buying Galkyd! I've only used linseed oil and paint thinner when it comes to adding stuff to my paint, trying something to speed up drying sounds great though. I have some stuff called Liquin (By Winsor & Newton) that came with a set I bought, I've never used it but it seems like it's similar in terms of appearance and consistency. May have to break out an old practice canvas and see what happens!
    Also I think people don't like mediums because they associate it with cleaning, and to me personally, cleaning bigger brushes is suchhhh a hassle haha. Anyways thanks for the video, I appreciate the tips!

    • @prchkkizhe7
      @prchkkizhe7 7 лет назад +2

      Galkyd, Liquin, and other siccatives change the nature of oil paint and the process of oil painting - often to the detriment of a quality painting. Oil paint is a medium that wants to flow without constraints. Using siccatives with oil paint is akin to driving a wonderful sports car with the hand brake on. Why this obsession with quick-drying and convenience? As an oil painter, I do what I can to slow down the drying process as much as possible, thus allowing me to model the paint surface of a canvas for as long as is necessary. Between sessions I store my canvas in a wooden, light-proof, and air tight box. The box is then put in a very cool place. A canvas stored in this way can remain wet for weeks. Only when a painting is finished do I think of drying it.

      cleaning brushes in solvent is hard on some....i just let soak in oil and paper napkin out the oil next use...keeping colors separate brush wise...hate washing out brushes...tedious!

    • @richiejourney1840
      @richiejourney1840 6 лет назад +3

      Poruchik Kizhe wonderful...if you like and want to keep painting wet into wet. You are aware that the masters also worked wet into dry? But you are also right that oil paint wants to flow without constraint...that’s why we add mediums so that they will flow with all kinds of results. When we wish them to dry faster so that we can scumble or glaze then that’s what we do. Using siccatives with oil paint is akin to driving a wonderful sports car down a quarter mile racing strip-again and again and again...
      But it is also wonderful to paint wet into wet for a long time as well. To each their own when they so wish it.

    All I did for years were just use a thinner and then out of the tube. It's really simple really. Now I have started to use other mediums and understand it more. Oil paint is far easier and more forgiving than people realise, it's perfect for a beginner I think because you can take more time and adjust as you go along. People are to shy when it comes to painting, you just have to go for it and with each painting you will get better it's quite magical, you only get better I can guarantee that.

    People should never be put off by a new challenge or learning a new skill - such as oil painting.
    Undoubtedly, certain aspects can seem daunting at first, such as the topic that you're covering, but the sense of reward, achievement and fulfilment will outweigh any earlier frustrations and failures one would expect when taking on a new venture.
    Practise, practise, practise!
    Sir Edmund Hillary wouldn't have been the first Brit to climb Everest without sheer determination.
    ....the same applies to a beautiful medium such as oil painting. One doesn't expect to become Rembrandt or Constable overnight (or ever infact), nor should one expect to do so....
    ....the aim is to have fun and to produce art for ones own gratification.
    It's all about making marks!
    Great video 🖒
    Chris (UK).

      Mary Tales can you use the same mediums she was talking about except with water instead of gamsol?

    • @MaryDraws
      @MaryDraws 7 лет назад

      Unfortunately not. Nothing bad will happen if you mix them together but since the mediums aren't water soluble, you'd have to clean up with solvents. There ARE mediums that you can use with them though. Holbein sells a water soluble linseed oil to go with their Aqua Duo line. There are alternatives to the ones shown that can be used and do the same thing like speeding up drying time. Oh I should add that water solubles can be mixed with "regular" oils up to 30% before they can't be cleaned with water anymore. They can both be used in a painting at the same time, just the clean up is affected.

    • @nicola.p
      @nicola.p 7 лет назад

      Mary Tales Thanks. I have been considering water soluable oils. Do they have the same texture and behave the same as regular oils? Is the only difference that you can use water to clean up? Do you use water to thin the paint or do they do a watersoluble oil medium for that? (sorry for so many questions)

    • @MaryDraws
      @MaryDraws 7 лет назад +1

      Your questions are fine ^-^ don't apologize! I use Holbein so here is a link that answers I think all of your questions. holbeinamerica.com/duo-aqua-oil-color/
      I use them along with traditional oils and I can't tell any difference between them any more than any other two different traditional oil paints being compared. I think some people try out the "cheaper" versions of the water solubles and decide they don't like them when they could just as easily bought cheaper traditional oils and not have liked them either. I hope I'm making sense! Just like any other paint, you'd want to make sure the brand you plan on buying has good reviews.
      Anyway, yes, I insist that at least the Holbein duo aqua brand does feel the same and you'd never know it was water soluble until you actually try to mix the water in. There are mediums you can use with them if you want to use something other than water. Holbein does have a water soluble linseed oil. It all depends on how you as an individual artist prefer to work. It just replaces the need for turps with water.

  • @allthings2allmen
    @allthings2allmen 7 лет назад

    Lena thanks alot!
    I had never heard of Gamsol until tonight, I will be looking for it! I have used Liquin {it never ever pissed me off}An artist friend introduced me to at the University of Alabama. I like to layer paint, & enjoy the fluidity & transparency it gives as well as its aid in drying time. I also use Grumtine (Grumbacher orange oil spirit) this stuff is great & smells great too. There is always some gum spirit turpentine & linseed oil at hand & if I have to use mineral spirits I go with one that has no smell.
    My only main dilemma is I don't paint often enough for reasons FAR too complicated to say, (nothing to do with frustration with my own work.) Just life & business i guess you might say, but I have not given up.
    I enjoyed watching you paint & admire your technique! I'm so estranged from the art friendly setting that I have forgotten alot, but it is kind of a mixed blessing, it propels one to go into unforged arenas & explore..hmm is that, I mean could that be the point? One also learns to be resourceful & you find sources of inspiration in worlds of different ways...funny even in High school AP art classes I would sit there and feel so uninspired...a classroom full of young aspiring artists could actually stagnate in a hurry...ironic huh?

    I haven't used oil paints since art school back in the 'Seventies and even then I was more into other media like acrylic and watercolor (used in mixed-media and other non-traditional painting). However, I have never quite liked the look of acrylics when dry, no matter how much I try to make them look like something else. :-) Recently I was given a bunch of second-hand oil paints so I thought I'd take the plunge. I'm especially interested in the different mediums since in my day it was pretty much Damar varnish and linseed oil, and to clean up turpentine. Thank you so much for your videos! Using mediums is one of the reasons I'm excited to start painting with oils. I've been using acrylics for years and honestly they are frustrating. They dry too fast! I dont want my paint to dry while I'm using it lol. And yes, I've added mediums to my acrylics to try and help the flow and increase drying time but they honestly don't work for me. This may be a dumb question.... but is there a difference between turpentine and Galkyd Lite (aside from the horrid smell of the turp)? I have walnut oil as well and I'm wondering if I can mix Galkyd with the oil as my "medium" in the way Lena has done here? Any help is very very appreciated!!!!

    Totally. Very good info Lena, i used to use Liquin a lot but Gamblin products are much less toxic apparently therefore better and of course there's always plain ol' Linseed and stand oil as you mention.

    I was not one of the angry ones, but I still found this very helpful, and I agree, Jerry's is great! Especially for Practica canvases and "try its" such as $1 and $2 deals to test a brand. Thanks:)
