Hi Phil, Q2, about Hersey Blanchard. The model says that unable and unwilling people are better to be directed. In this case, the new team member is indeed unable (very little experience) but is definitely willing (very eager, confident, wants to learn). Therefore it seems that coaching (Unable - no experience / willing - very eager) would be the best approach no?

Hi Max. Where did you get that verbiage?
Blanchard's model is slightly different from their combined model, so it depends on the text you are reading.
Someone in the lower right does not need a whole lot of support.
      D1 is generally as follows:
D1 - Enthusiastic Beginner: Low competence with high commitment. That is why they need less support than section D2.
Blanchard's situational leadership II model uses the terms "competence" (ability, knowledge, and skill) and "commitment" (confidence and motivation) to describe different levels of development.
According to Ken Blanchard, "Four combinations of competence and commitment make up what we call 'development level.'"
D1 - Enthusiastic Beginner: Low competence with high commitment
D2 - Disillusioned Learner: Low/middling competence with low commitment
D3 - Capable but Cautious Performer: High competence with low/variable commitment
D4 - Self-reliant Achiever: High competence with high commitment

      2. Coaching (S2)
The S2 leadership style provides followers with both direction and personal support. In the S2 stage of development, followers are still unable to perform their tasks but are motivated to succeed. Therefore, leaders should ensure that followers are developing the necessary skills but still maintaining their self-confidence. Ultimately, this results in followers that can take on personal responsibility for their tasks.

It is really a sprint backlog but there’s no similar planning as we do it in predictive.
