Savage Daughter (2016 version)

- I didn't really ask for much yesterday at Northshield's Bardic Madness but when I saw one of my favourite people in the world there I had to beg a favour. I asked Savage Daughter herself to allow me to record a better version of her iconic song than is found elsewhere on this channel. In her usual gracious way, she said yes as long as I found her some backup singers. Not a hard thing to do in a building filled with bards and fans of this great lady. (You can see the fan love in every one of them.)
Thus, I present what I hope will be a video that will go viral. Wyndreth Berginsdottir, aka Savage Daughter and Shield Maiden, is here, surrounded by Northshield bards at Northshield's Bardic Madness on 16 April 2016.
This perfection didn't happen in one take. See the Blooper Reel at • Savage Daughter Bloope... .

i love how this song, written for nordic women, has become an anthem for indigenous women as well. wyndreth’s voice is so powerful, and with this song she has provided a great symbol of strength for all women.
I do like that but some indigenous are saying it’s only there’s and hating on non indigenous for singing it
@@deeganclaflin977 they’re probably just misinformed. a lot of people hear tiktok audios without knowing the origin of them, and make assumptions. it’s too bad but the best we can do is educate them and hope they have an open mind. :)
Savage daughters are of every type.
@@amandagoldsbury8122 Right , because ethnic white culture belongs to everyone. It is only they who can be guilty of appropriation.
@@deeganclaflin977 Ethnic whites are not allowed to have a culture. All we create is for the world, and engaging in anything others create is “cultural appropriation”. “Rules for thee, not for me”.
The man singing in awe and confidently singing about being a savage daughter is making me chuckle but I love this.
@Jordan Guest 07/29/20: That's me -- on one knee there in black, blue, and gray, on the left as you view it -- Dahrien Cordell. And Jordan, your comment brought *me* a chuckle and smile when Eleshava shared it with me today; I thank you. 🙂 ... I *have* indeed been singing that song for a very long time now, and I *am* in awe of my friend Karin aka Wyndreth! In fact ...
I first heard this song at an SCA event called Warriors And Warlords (Two), and Wyndreth Berginsdottir (Karen Kahan, the author of the song) graciously sang it for me to record it with a hand-held Sony Walkman tape recorder. (Kids, ask your parents, or maybe grandparents. OR museum curators, depending on how far into my present future you happen to be reading this!) My friend Avery and I listened to that above three dozen times on our twelve-hour drive home the next day. When I closed my eyes and listened to her singing these words, I could just see these images floating up out of the darkness ... a ring of colored stones, cat faces, feathers and bones, and so on (breathe in, breathe out, okay, moving on) ... and I told my driving companion about it and added, "You know what would be cool? If someone [...]", but it was just expressing a cool fantasy kind of thing, right? If *someone* would do the thing. ... Well -- Some time later, I collected some fallen saplings and branches and let them season for a year; in the meantime, I learned and worked at my friend David Nightblade's forge, crafting a leaf-blade spear point, and then affixing that to the branch I chose to be the spear's haft. I also researched as best I could the artistic styles of the Norse people from around the time of Wyndreth's persona -- "Like, how *did* or *would* a Norse person from way back then draw a cat's face or bones or thunder or whatever???" -- so that I could carve and ink in mnemonic images as representations of the lyrics around the spear haft. Another friend Thorkell told me that "they", if they were going to decorate something like a spear, would most commonly have either filled the entire piece with decoration or decorated the most important parts, such as where the work was done, like the point or where hands gripped it. With four verses in the song, I placed a band of images above and below each place on the haft that were the most natural places to grip it with either hand. And that spear was a gift for the woman who gifted us all with this song. [In fact, it was even a bit more of a gift than I figured it would be; Karin asked me if she could use the image I had designed to represent the daughter in the song as the cover art for her album!] ... and so now back to what was some of my point here: I guess a year or more of listening to the recording and singing that song at campfires and while working in the forge gave me a part of that confidence you mentioned, Jordan 🙂.
@@JustForWebUse Hi, Dahrien! Thank you for sharing this beautiful story with me. I'm so happy that you got to be a part of this. How divine and special.
That was my exact thought 🤣🤣🤣
I guess Cleopatra by the lumineers bugs you too? Or JFK saying he was a Berliner, when clearly he wasn’t? You can’t understand how someone might interpret a song metaphorically?
@@splashmt99 why are you angry this was a very civil commentary section where @Just for web Use shared a powerful story about how he discovered this song and ended up singing it. I just don’t understand why you would direct so much aggressiveness to this poor individual who has done nothing. Please think about your comments more before you bash someone just for the sake of it. It could do some real damage. Kind regards in these hard times of pandemic.
she really needs to do a studio recording. lol, one more try to get her to come sing this for ya! bring her to a studio 🙏🙏🙏🙏 she absolutely DESERVES TO GO VIRAL. SHE DESERVES SO MUCH CREDIT.
When I first heard this song, I was sure it was one that my ancestors sang. I laugh at myself a bit on this one. But it reaches me that deeply and I can't thank you enough!
i found this song through random witch and magick ticktocks and it’s so beautiful
Same
The communist fist is anti these very people.
I only recently discovered this song and it feels like it speaks my soul. Bless Wyndreth for creating it and thank you for making this arrangement happen. It's amazing.
Chorus:
I am my mother's savage daughter,
the one who runs barefoot cursing sharp stones.
I am my mother's savage daughter,
I will not cut my hair, I will not lower my voice.
My mother's child is a savage,
She looks for her omens in the colors of stones,
In the faces of cats, in the fall of feathers,
In the dancing of fire and the curve of old bones.
(Chorus)
My mother's child dances in darkness,
And sings heathen songs by the light of the moon,
And watches the stars and renames the planets,
And dreams she can reach them with a song and a broom.
(Chorus)
My mother's child curses too loud and too often,
My mother's child laughs too hard and too long,
And howls at the moon and sleeps in ditches,
And clumsily raises her voice in this song.
(Chorus)
Now we all are brought forth out of darkness and water,
Brought into this world through blood and through pain,
And deep in our bones, the old songs are wakening,
So sing them with voices of thunder and rain.
(Chorus x3)
We are our mother's savage daughters,
The ones who run barefoot cursing sharp stones.
We are our mother's savage daughters,
We will not cut our hair, We will not lower our voice
:)
thank you 💗
Thank you ❤❤❤

Right?? I can't put my finger on it. It's soo elegant
I fell madly in love with this song about a year ago, and today in the mist of my studies of witchcraft as a baby witch, I was reminded of this battle cry. The like I leave on this video is for my sisters❤
I always think of my late, wonderful friend Lisa when I hear this song. I remember bravery when I hear this song.
I cannot love this enough
+Steve Shell Thanks, Gideon!!!

this song always gives me goosebumps I love this
I have just found my way here.... I love this song so much, and have just shared it with my wonderful people:) Thank you for sharing this.. I hope it does go viral! The cover by the artist Sarah Hester Ross popped up on my streaming music radio just now and gave me chills... I had to track this song down, and I am so very glad I did! Karen Kahan / Wyndreth Berginsdottir should be getting more credit for this, I hope she is getting royalties somehow, at least. This is an anthem that speaks to our souls, and is much-needed now, as ever. Thank you
This is me today ☺
I sang this with a group of ladies at Gulf Wars Thunder camp! It was amazing! My favorite SCA song!
I saw this song on Instagram and i love bit

This song is everything I want to be but can’t
you can be ;) I am very cheesy, but really. That's what the song is trying to say, it's for any woman who wants to be braver and stronger.
This song speaks to all us heathens. We as women can all love, relate, and share this song in unity and love. We need to stand together even more don't let them divide us.
this speaks to my soul in a way i can't explain.
This is absolutely my favourite song!
I dont know how the hell I found this song but Im very glad of it

Where’s she from? I can’t quite place her accent. 😊
She's from Wisconsin.
I'm crying. I've never seen so many women in the same room looking so bad ass with my build before. Broad shouldered, full figured, with modest breasts.
This I Adore!
Hi everyone - I've sent at least 10 emails to different folks trying to get information with regards to legally licensing this song , making sure she is aware and grants the license and/or permission - any help would be appreciated..
Bleeeeeessssss
this song just reminds me of how to train your dragon way too much and idk why
So powerful! A wonderful hello from another SCA singing nerd who is also a savage daughter.
Cursing sharp stones? For hurting savage daughter's feet? How come there's no cornea under savage daughter's feet to protect them from getting hurt by sharp stones? Ridiculous...
I wish you and Alina nic an Bhaird (Glenda Burell) of Gleann Ahbann could do a song together!!!!
This is her....

Wish there was a male version to this song as history there were male witches who were called warlocks so it is valid for both sexes.
But the term witch (in the paganism/neopaganism) is agender, it's for female and male
Write it.
Whats witches got to do with it?
