Here's an excellent soundboard recording of jazz & fusion guitar legend Mike Stern, bassist Alain Caron and drummer Ben Perowsky performing two high energy versions of the jazz standards "I Hear A Rhapsody" and Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" in Montreal in 1993. Caron became somewhat famous through his membership of the fusion group "Uzeb" before embarking on an artistically fruitful solo career after they disbanded, but despite that he's not a household name like Stern. He's another link in the long chain of virtuoso bassists Mike Stern has worked with through the years, and as you can hear he's a world class walker and soloist. He's also a great composer/arranger and can play some mean slap bass as well. Drummer Ben Perowsky has an impressive resumé and has worked with a who's who in the jazz & fusion world including Dizzy Gillespie, John Scofield and John Zorn. I wish this trio had recorded a studio album together because their musical rapport was off the hook, something this recording is a testament to.
Alain Caron, one of my absolute favorite bass playes and heros as a bass player myself (both for his whole UZEB period and his solo career), perhaps my strongest influence for the fretless bass and the 6 string bass choice
