Interesting that very few units or soldiers in general in Britain and America are trained properly for cold climates. My dad was in a NATO exercise with Americans back in the 70s while serving in the Norwegian army and the Americans had huge problems with the snow, while Norwegians having grown up in the snow, had none. Every single Norwegian soldier learns how to use skiis(pretty much every civilian knows it too) and to generally work well in the snow and cold conditions. Weird that since both America and Britain have plenty of cold and snowy areas, you would think they too would prioritize it a bit more. I guess its partly cultural.
While I don't disagree with you, A) debating with people in RUclips comments is always pointless as nobody wins, and B) correcting something that was commented over 2 years ago is especially pointless
Samuel Essenhoff I had assumed Scotland got snow all year round in the mountains but you’re correct. I also agree with what you said on the subject of commenting on old RUclips comments.
Scotland doesn't have mountains, so no it doesn't snow all year round. 4400 feet is not a mountain and the difference in temperature at 4400 feet from sea level is like 3 degrees. England is a wishy washy country, their idea of a "mountain" is what most other people regard as a pretty big hill. I live on the coast of California, and there are mountains with roads over them 45 minutes from my house the same size as the biggest mountain in England.
@@aluisious You do realise the UK is a small Island compared to the US which is about 66 times bigger so totally different land mass and many more environments too train in!! Hence we are small and nimble Military as don't have the numbers or the money compared to the American Military muscle.

Brits talking about that their armys can provide the most specialized training and their training is admired around the world, but you cant teach the americans and who else you train how to hold the ski poles proper..
Back in 97 I had the pleasure of treating many frostbitten Marines, freezing their nuts off because they were soaked in sweat from working. They had been wearing their full winter gear while working or manouvering/skiing. And from this video, the Royals did not teach these Marines how to dress in winter either. 3+ layers of warm winter clothing while building snowcaves.. Madness! Thats your warm clothes soaked in sweat, in -20C(or lower).
acky731 tbh you wouldn’t think the Royal Marines could teach the us marines well in this environment as they don’t really specialise in this weather, however make no mistake the Royal Marines are very highly trained and can be comparable to special forces around the world they just don’t work in snow that much.
@@thea-dog1157 Er? Wrong! Brother was a Mtn Leader in the R.M as part of the Mtn Arctic Warfare Cadre. These were the conditions they were trained to fight.
I heard a story about those cold nights during winter war between finland and soviet union, the finns attacked the russian camp silently, killing the russian guards by slitting their throats and they died and blood froze almost instantly.
Odd they don't mention two of the most important things in cold weather activity. The first is don't overdress, with some of the activity these were doing at only -19 they seemed too heavily dressed. Being over dressed causes you to sweat and that is one of the worst things you can do in cold environments. Admittedly it was only -19 so it would not have been a concern unless their was a good wind but when its gets to -40 skin exposure and breathing become much more critical. Skin can freeze in minutes and you can get frost damage to your lungs. Its not that big a thing but you have to be careful. Admittedly I have never been in the military but grew up in fairly cold environments. As a kid we used to play outside in -19. The Canadian army has been training with members of the Canadian Rangers who are part time soldiers who are Inuit.
@@galahadthegreen5696 perhaps they do that in Canada too? I assume the Canadian army is very experienced in Arctic warfare based on their location on the planet
Stolen glory. The training in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, for example, are under the best cold weather training regime, and trainers and been going on for close to 400 years in Swedens case (counting the northern units then)). Started with Swedish king Charles X's change of military structure.
I served in GSV Kirkenes in Norway (main job to prevent boarder crossing and recon the area) and Im quite an experienced artic recon soldier. We operate 24/7 no matter the weather and temp. Driven a lot of snowmobiling and skiing with heavy bagpack pluss weapon in temp down to -49 Celsius, thats fucking cold I'll tell u that :P
As a former server of the norwegian border-patrol (military) I can conclude that these marines would have a tough time getting through the basic winter training conducted by norwegian military force. Also adding that almost everyone has to serve compulsory military service in Norway, a large quantum of our population has the knowledge needed to survive in such climates. Makes one proud to be norwegian.

well, technically, porsanger is further east than Turkey -which is mostly in asia. In any case, if you listen carefully, he did not actually claim that norway was in eastern europe. He was referring to allied personell being in the baltics, which is in eastern europe, then he proceeded saying that they were "here" (referring to norway) for the same reason.
I met the British marines once when they had winter exercises in Sweden. They had to quit the training and go back to the mountain station because it was too windy. Indeed it was hurricane strength winds, but I was still a bit surprised.
+Dick Varga But the Brits create much of the worlds advanced military tech with BAE Systems and the hundreds of other military arms dealers the UK has. Russians, Finns, Swedes and Norwegians won't have half the tech the Brits and Americans use.
Dick Varga So are other nations like the British. The SAS swear by using old tech. Look at the toughest place in Afghanistan, Helmand Province. The US couldn't capture it so asked the British. The British not only captured it but held onto it for years before admitting that they couldn't go any further because their prime minister at that time, Gordon Brown, was refusing to send out equipment that they needed. But they captured and held it for years by using very old tech from the Vietnam era. And they and other nations are trained in harsh conditions and bad rations. its all part and parcel of being a soldier.
+FuzzFace No disagreement here. I just believe that Siberian & Northern Euro Russians are by upbringing more cold hardy & used to poor living conditions than American soldiers from temperate & semi tropical climates and more comfortable middle class life at least initially until they acclimatise. Some USAmericans are from cold winter stares, the northern tier stares & Alaska but most are not. I suspect the old tech vietnam era fighting, holding villages was old even then. Didn't the Brits use similar tech in 1900 against the Boers ? Against Afghans for 50 years before that?
***** A deadly weapon is a deadly weapon. If you think they are so easy to defeat then you go over to Afghanistan and defeat them. As soon as they fire them "rusty" weapons at you i guarantee you wont be saying its just rusty junk then. You would shit ya pants and cry for ya mum. And no a lot of it hasn't been rusting away. If you look at some of the big raids carried out in Iraq and Afghanistan quite a lot equipment seized was modern and new. But yeah, some had Russian stamps on it.
The Norwegian military has the best winter training in the world, the winter school as it is called and they are without a doubt one of the best in the world at this subject. A shame the Norwegians who contributed here didn't get any credit. Strange that they keep emphasising that the Royal Marines are the ones who are training the US Marines here, considering they are in a Norwegian military camp...
It isn't the first time that British troops have trained American troops. It isn't even the first time that the Royal Marines have trained US Marines. They do it all the time and have done since the 17th Century.
+BBC Newsbeat US Marine Corps have cross trained in Norway with Royal for years, as have all other NATO troops. I was in Norway in 2007 and 2008 with Royal Marines, I met Dutch, Norwegian, and US military - this is a spun story, - 'Dear Russia, look, America is on our side, and we're not far away..'
+Paul Snape It's also just typically light on facts. The US is also an Arctic country. Units do train above the circle in Alaska. Marines can train in areas that receive more snow and are colder on average, than Finland. The issue is that the force is so large, if you train at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in California, or above the circle in Alaska, you either do the summer or winter course. So guys who do the summer course, by chance, might never cycle into a winter training environment. Or even serve in a place that gets below freezing.
A lot of Marines are from the Midwest and South. They grow up in warm climates and usually have never put skis on in their lives. 10th Mountain Division should be sent to do this type pf training. They're specific mission is to fight in arctic and mountain conditions. That being said, I doubt the entirety of the Russian army is specialized in Arctic warfare, it's an incredibly tough environment, if any military would know how to fight in the freezing cold and snow it would be the Finnish, who beat the soviets who wholeheartedly.
Aha...Americans are great, they seem to have a real positive attitude. They're quite funny as well "If we went to war with Russia, I'd be f*cked, I don't know how to use this sh*t". Having done this kind of skiing, it takes a lot of effort to stand up again only to fall 10 meters later, it's mentally and physically taxing.
+HMSDaring1 Well the US Army has trained Mountain Divisions I think they train up in Alaska at NWTC but Arctic training for the USMC, I think this is a great idea they just need to keep some kind of proficiency going, I am sure when I was in the Navy the Booties worked with US troops in Norway before now though, not sure which branch they were , I remember a RM telling me on an Ex the weather closed in and they were pretty much stuck but the US forces just had some C-5s roll in and take them all the way home lol
+Pablo Jay you are right Pablo, they've cross trained with each other for years - I met a USMC Gunnery Sgt in Norway who I then went to Alaska with, he was a cold weather warfare expert and an Avalanche risk specialist - seconded to train with Royal Marines and cross pollinate their skills back and forth - this isn't a new story at all, just a strange attempt at spin I think.
Paul Snape Ya, i think this is just common NATO PR stock footage , the Russians don`t need a news report to tell them we still train together but its nice PR for the public :P
+HMSDaring1 Believe it or not, we get snow in the US! Even arctic temperatures because we are an Arctic country! And we have skis as well! I know, shocking! For Marines who have ever taken a winter course, this is nothing new. You can freeze your ass off while skiing in California, or Alaska.
I remember when I was in the army here in Norway, we where on a 1 week skiingtrip where all we had of food and fuel was what we could carry in our backpack and a sledge. and we lived in these small "knapptelt" these diamondshape cloth that you put together to a larger square, the heat came from a primus wich provided also heat to melt snow to water. While on manouver we had to put snow into our canteen and put it at our body to melt the water :-) lost alot of weight that trip hehe but it was fun, bathing was done running out in the snow rolling around and rub in the snow on our bodies hehe cooooold :-) I was a so cold "Tetningslist" the guy who sleeps at the outer edge in the tent, that is the coldest point, every morning I had to rip the sleepingbag from the tent as it was frozen to the walls hehe. But I have a high tolerance for cold so thats okey for me :-) I miss the army life :-)
Its great to see that the marine is working on cold weather, but i think its kinda funny to see em struggle with the skiing, bevause i live in Norway, and that weather im pretty used to, sooo.. ;)
Why the hell did the us sent soldiers to train with British soldiers in the snow ??!!! Canada is just up north of the us and the Canadian army has better training in cold weather!
Why does everybody think Norway has a weak military? You can clearly see that these guys are new to cold weather and couldn't attack Norway and have a chance, even with double the soilders. Norway is very underrated!!
the russians are going to attack, they are used to cold, these men are training to help protect norway and other eu countries if russia tries to expand borders
hehe you know the Norwegians have more guns in the population than the americans if you look at the % in the population. hehe. i have myself 12. how are you british armed? lol. i hear you are killing yourself with knifes alot these days. come to Norway little desktop warrior. 5 million people and almous a gun to each of us ;) we are well armed.....
-14 in Norway, that’s not cold. They must be down South, for us up North, -30 was a standard day. Far to many thick clothes on, this has got to be their first deployment as a unit.
The US Marines learn winter survival and warfare from the Royal Marines. And the Royal Marines learn it from the Norwegian Army. But who cares, we're all friends. You bet the Russians are watching Cold Response 2016 closely.
Probably could have, and should have, cut out the middle man for the training. We have mountain divisions in the Army, and units exchanging with Norway and Canada every single year. Also, our troops from our northern most states do have many more skiers mixed in.
The Russians are watching these chaps train in cold weather ?????? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Like they watched the German Army crumble before them ???
The russians arent this good in the Winter at the last Edelweis raid (a Mountain warfare competition in Austria) they were far behind the Swiss German and Austrian Teams
There's a classic BBC Doc from cold war 70s or 80s where the Norwegian Army were teaching the Royal Marines how to survive in Arctic conditions. They looked just as helpless as these US Marines.
Awesome video, but you can't compare the Royal Marines to the US marines, The Royal Marines outclass them in every aspect, just look at the length of training
look, theres a reason our military can train our soldiers to a higher standard than the training the US military can provide.. yes you beat us on man power, but for the US military to be able to train their military to the standards of ours would be too costly, the UK military is a lot smaller than the US thus we are able to train our soldiers to a higher standard than yours, its fact, if you're making honest comparisons id compare the US marines to the same standard as the British Army.. US marine training 13 weeks (basic) British Army training 14 weeks (basic) again this is comparing your 'marines' to our regular British Infantry training Royal marine commandos 32 weeks parachute regiment 28 weeks (could be wrong) SAS training, im not sure, i know numerous people have died during the training and its Brutal.. i guess it has to be since they're the best in the world at what they do!
nano4778 Not really. The US is probably the only country that can maintain a professional force that size. Comparing the Royal Marines with USMCs is invalid though. The Royal Marines are a light infantry force while USMCs is another military branch. Basic USMCs who've gone through basic and SOI training are just qualified infantryman, not ''commandos''. But the USMCs have elite units that are better trained than the Royal Marines. Such as the Marine Raider Regiment and Reconnaissance Marines. Numerous people have died training at BUDs and Ranger School also.
The russians arent this good in the Winter at the last Edelweis raid (a Mountain warfare competition in Austria) they were far behind the Swiss German and Austrian Teams
i bet the russians are laughing their asses off to this :D

Just like in every war ever. Russian harbour delusions of being the best and their dictator leading them to victory. Then a real war starts and they get massacred, sometimes being saved only because they have allies, like happened in WW2.
Standard US Marine training is comparable to that of the British Army, but MARSOC (Marine Special Operations Command) is of the same standard as Royal Marines.
All those Marines have to do is go to Fort Wainwright Alaska At Yakima training area and train in -63 below If they want to experience arctic conditions send them up there. We got an entire brigade who can train them and the Royals and teach them how to survive in Arctic conditions...

expat stone Wow, wow no need to be rude. Just funny to watch, that's all. I guess I'll be looking funny if I try to surf or whatever. Don't overreact.
+Samuel Esenhoff, the UK has scotland which gets snow all year round in some parts. It's just not at the same level as Norway.
AS anorwegian i love watching how the Brits and Yanks are adapting to cold weather, well done! As a norwegian we have been playing in the snow since childhood. If u fail u die in the snow, gg to our foreighn allies.
HorizonExer And who do the Brits learn off????? hey just a thought? maybe the nation who teaches us should teach us properly then lol
acky731 tbh you wouldn’t think the Royal Marines could teach the us marines well in this environment as they don’t really specialise in this weather, however make no mistake the Royal Marines are very highly trained and can be comparable to special forces around the world they just don’t work in snow that much.
@@thea-dog1157 Er? Wrong! Brother was a Mtn Leader in the R.M as part of the Mtn Arctic Warfare Cadre. These were the conditions they were trained to fight.
B McG what is the royal marine do poke me with a ski pole
8:06 wtf he do climb mt. Everest barefoot?
These people should come train with us in the Canadian Arctic. -60 degree nights aren’t rare!
I heard a story about those cold nights during winter war between finland and soviet union, the finns attacked the russian camp silently, killing the russian guards by slitting their throats and they died and blood froze almost instantly.
why not making a buggy(11:50) to put everyone in instead of everyone using sledge individually and falling again and again
The Canadian army has been training with members of the Canadian Rangers who are part time soldiers who are Inuit.
john mcewen it is odd that they didn’t go upward to Canada for this training? The kids in our country do this stuff for fun in the winter
@@galahadthegreen5696 perhaps they do that in Canada too? I assume the Canadian army is very experienced in Arctic warfare based on their location on the planet
The best training in the world by the Royal Marine Commandos🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Stolen glory. The training in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, for example, are under the best cold weather training regime, and trainers and been going on for close to 400 years in Swedens case (counting the northern units then)). Started with Swedish king Charles X's change of military structure.
Great report BBC really interesting, I am sure the US Marines will be happy to get these skills under their belts, always better to be prepared.
Oohrah good to see the two strongest marines working together.
Srg720 Well that's too bad that you think that way.
@Srg720 what record?
i wonder what evrioment is hardest to figth in, urban, jungel, desert or snow
lordofdarkdudes the Royal Marines are trained and can fight on all the environments you listed it's quite impressive
Jungle seems to be the toughest because of extensive risks of disease. Attrition is simply higher there.

As a former server of the norwegian border-patrol (military) I can conclude that these marines would have a tough time getting through the basic winter training conducted by norwegian military force. Also adding that almost everyone has to serve
compulsory military service in Norway, a large quantum of our population has the knowledge needed to survive in such climates. Makes one proud to be norwegian.
God bless our marines!

My country is in eastern Europe now?
well, technically, porsanger is further east than Turkey -which is mostly in asia.
In any case, if you listen carefully, he did not actually claim that norway was in eastern europe. He was referring to allied personell being in the baltics, which is in eastern europe, then he proceeded saying that they were "here" (referring to norway) for the same reason.
11:30 why dont you use sleds, they are easier to move like that
why can we just live together friendly

I met the British marines once when they had winter exercises in Sweden. They had to quit the training and go back to the mountain station because it was too windy. Indeed it was hurricane strength winds, but I was still a bit surprised.
They should come and train in Sweden and Finland. We have a lot of winter warfare knowledge as well.

The best? Maybe the: Russians? Finns? Swedes? Norwegians? Koreans?
+Dick Varga But the Brits create much of the worlds advanced military tech with BAE Systems and the hundreds of other military arms dealers the UK has. Russians, Finns, Swedes and Norwegians won't have half the tech the Brits and Americans use.
+FuzzFace tech - yes but the russians are somewhat more cold-hardy and used to poor equipment, bad rations and harsh conditions.
Strange that they keep emphasising that the Royal Marines are the ones who are training the US Marines here, considering they are in a Norwegian military camp...
sshhhh, don't tell everyone about our winter school!
Naaaaa Sweden have the best winter trainers ;)
Russians be laughing till seal team 2 comes😂
It isn't the first time that British troops have trained American troops. It isn't even the first time that the Royal Marines have trained US Marines. They do it all the time and have done since the 17th Century.
+Bad_Robot we are referring to the training taking place in arctic conditions.
+BBC Newsbeat except it doesn't say that does it? 0:41, got to be accurate.
+R Sulli yeah, they make it sound like the US Marines have no cold weather training functions, which simply is not true.
Song name? 11:29
I would drink a beer with those boys.
+HMSDaring1 you're not wrong! Moving on skis with huge weight on your back is a killer - especially when you're dragging a pulk as well!
Paul Snape
Ya, i think this is just common NATO PR stock footage , the Russians don`t need a news report to tell them we still train together but its nice PR for the public :P
+HMSDaring1 Believe it or not, we get snow in the US! Even arctic temperatures because we are an Arctic country! And we have skis as well! I know, shocking! For Marines who have ever taken a winter course, this is nothing new. You can freeze your ass off while skiing in California, or Alaska.
it is a great experience. like old day boy scout in any environment.
All of that training is like basic knowledge of any Norwegian😂
Don't talk nonsense. Everyone in Oslo could survive weeks in the artic winter?
4:30 min, that vest is soooo brand new that she never touch an hand granade!
While on manouver we had to put snow into our canteen and put it at our body to melt the water :-) lost alot of weight that trip hehe but it was fun, bathing was done running out in the snow rolling around and rub in the snow on our bodies hehe cooooold :-)
I was a so cold "Tetningslist" the guy who sleeps at the outer edge in the tent, that is the coldest point, every morning I had to rip the sleepingbag from the tent as it was frozen to the walls hehe. But I have a high tolerance for cold so thats okey for me :-)
I miss the army life :-)
And falling asleep to the soothing sound of the good old Optimus :) Those were the days, and nights :)
Grizzley & polar bears & CANADA MOOSE N WOLFS WOULD MESS UP TRAINING.. CHEERS
Because the government wants to waste our tax dollars.
To learn different ways of winter warfare used in different areas so they can select methods that they find best for different conditions?
Norway has the best winter training in the world.
Monstaro no we just shoot them and teach others how to live off the land lol
I had a blast watching the ski training XD
Why does everybody think Norway has a weak military? You can clearly see that these guys are new to cold weather and couldn't attack Norway and have a chance, even with double the soilders. Norway is very underrated!!
20000 soldier's, that is weak.
the russians are going to attack, they are used to cold, these men are training to help protect norway and other eu countries if russia tries to expand borders
hehe you know the Norwegians have more guns in the population than the americans if you look at the % in the population. hehe. i have myself 12. how are you british armed? lol. i hear you are killing yourself with knifes alot these days. come to Norway little desktop warrior.

You bet the Russians are watching Cold Response 2016 closely.
might as well get years of experience instead of starting out with no knowledge
+Republic3D MWTC in Bridgeport son.
Probably could have, and should have, cut out the middle man for the training. We have mountain divisions in the Army, and units exchanging with Norway and Canada every single year. Also, our troops from our northern most states do have many more skiers mixed in.
That’s a fucking tune 11:20
Lol i did this at a Boy Scout camp
"Train hard, fight easy" Easier said than done though!
The Russians are watching these chaps train in cold weather ??????

The russians arent this good in the Winter at the last Edelweis raid (a Mountain warfare competition in Austria) they were far behind the Swiss German and Austrian Teams
This excercise was led by the Norwegian Armed Forces, who train in these conditins 6 months year
There's a classic BBC Doc from cold war 70s or 80s where the Norwegian Army were teaching the Royal Marines how to survive in Arctic conditions. They looked just as helpless as these US Marines.
the russians are having a good laugh seeing this :D
Yea I bet the Russians laughed at The Taliban as well. Never underestimate United States Marines.
I laugh on Russians ladies

Well you take what expertise and help you can ...God bless the allies ..
Awesome video, but you can't compare the Royal Marines to the US marines, The Royal Marines outclass them in every aspect, just look at the length of training
nano4778 Not really.
The Marine Raider Regiment and even Recon Marines outclassed the Royal Marines.
32 weeks training, they are commandos.
nano4778 The Marine Raider Regiment trains for over 3 years.
look, theres a reason our military can train our soldiers to a higher standard than the training the US military can provide.. yes you beat us on man power, but for the US military to be able to train their military to the standards of ours would be too costly, the UK military is a lot smaller than the US thus we are able to train our soldiers to a higher standard than yours, its fact, if you're making honest comparisons id compare the US marines to the same standard as the British Army..
US marine training 13 weeks (basic)
British Army training 14 weeks (basic)
again this is comparing your 'marines' to our regular British Infantry training
Royal marine commandos 32 weeks
parachute regiment 28 weeks (could be wrong)
SAS training, im not sure, i know numerous people have died during the training and its Brutal.. i guess it has to be since they're the best in the world at what they do!
nano4778 Not really.
God help whoever is unlucky enough to fight the marines of both the uk and us ... and their friends like Norway 👍🏼🇺🇸🇬🇧🇳🇴
