Big fan of Kilts brother. I wear traditional Kilts every single day. People are always shocked seeing a black man in a kilt lol. I love my kilts like you would love a horse or a service weapon. People with strong nerves ask me if I am Scottish but its rare. I tell them that I’m Irish British and Nigerian which happens to be true.

I'm English and Welsh by ancestry, all American by birth. I like wearing kilts, I have a thrifty Irish national tartan kilt and e black utility kilt. I wear them in the true traditional way (commando) .

I've gotten the "that's not a real kilt" myself. Even had one woman remark "Oh you almost have a kilt on". I just chuckle. As you say, they're very functional and great for hiking

I have been wearing kilts for 30 years in public places and the comments have been overwhelmingly positive. The negative attitudes l simply ignore and refrain from any offensive replies. These negative reactions are rare.
Kilt wearing is an enjoyable experience and the freedom it provides is second to none. I truly stand amazed at men missing out on one of the most exciting experience in life: wearing a kilt. To be confined in pants from birth to death causes a man to miss out on getting in touch with his inner strength and adventurous spirit.

I am starting to look at wearing a utility type of kilt. They look comfortable and practical. If I really start to like it, I may even buy a traditional wool kilt and accessories for formal occasions.

I wear the cheap utility kilts from Amazon without a sporran for those outdoor activities that may or may not destroy the items that you ware and save the expensive high quality wool kilts with the sporran for everything else.

Imagine gatekeeping clothes. I don't really care what culture you are from whether you are an American with Scottish heritage or not. As long as you aren't actively mocking the kilt then it is fine for it to adapt and evolve as a modern garment. Having there be smart/affordable/practical/casual/workmanlike/high fashion variants of the kilt as a standard men's clothing option can only benefit us all.
Men should be able to turn up to a city banking job interview in a kilt and it be seen as just another smart formal men's clothing option; or turn up on the jobsite or a factory wearing a more practical version of a kilt and not face any more scrutiny over choice of clothing than if they had turned up wearing shorts.

A utility kilt serves a purpose as a rugged outdoor kilt , for hiking , I find a better kilt to handle the hiking , it's a cost effective alternative to traditional kilts .

I have traditional kilts, blended material kilts, and utility kilts. I dislike pockets, but like the removable "pockets" of a number of utility kilts.
I do a fair amount of work in the woods, foraging and wood cutting. Usually I wear one of the less expensive blended fabric kilts. But I prefer the utility kilt for chainsaw work as it does not collect wood shavings.
As far as material, I agree, a kilt is a kilt. I prefer the plaid wool/blends but agree that there is nothing wrong with a utility kilt.

Hey Michael, check out the UT Kilts Business model. There are no cargo pockets, but it has two slash pockets like most trousers. It has a nice clean look that I prefer to wear with a sporran on the leather strap if I need more storage than the built-in pockets. God bless, Rob

For me if I want to wear sporran while hiking or camping, I’m not gonna use a sporran chain I’m gonna use a sporran strap. I also I’m not gonna wear traditional Sporan. I’m going to wear probably something a little more custom-made, more like an old Jacobite style and I probably would not wear directly over my groin. It would probably Be worn more traditionally off to the side.

I don't know anything about kilts so my opinion does not count but it does not make sense to go hiking in a kilt that cost $500. Accidents happen so often. Great video and keep on wearing that utility kilt

Since IDGAF what others think, I've been kilted nearly everyday since November 2021. I love my pebble knit wool shooting socks when its cooler or to church. I'm getting some minnetonka high boots delivered soon. On really hot days I just go with my minimalist sandals by Earthrunners and Shamma. When its really hot, the Sarongs and Dhoti come out.

Flip the sporran to the waist, plus a shoulder bag is handy. Nice show.

TheKiltedRabbi here. Love your show! I bought 2 utility kilts and I have to admit that they are not my favorite. They are a little too "stiff" and wrinkle easily. Have you found a way to make them hang a bit nicer? So I have instead a number of polyviscose kilts that do have a tartan and prefer those. They are cheap enough that if they get trashed it won't break the bank. Also, as far as the sporran, I have a utility sporran from Damn Near Kilt Em, and when hiking I put it off the the side and it rides on my left hip. Keep up the great videos, bro!
My main go-tos are Ripstop. The one I wear in this video is a thicker material, but not too stiff. I also have two tartan utility kilts. Good tip on the sporran! Thanks for watching friend! ❤️🇺🇲🏴☕
I also tend to wear my sporran on my left hip. I use sporran hangers instead of a strap or chain and on the left it doesn't keep hitting me where I don't like being hit.

I have to agree, a utility kilt suffices when a man is hunting,fishing or hiking. If you want to see a grown man cry, watch him lose his custom bench made knife or destroy his bespoke traditional made kilt.

I seem to remember reading some time ago that the origin of the sporran was as a useful holdall worn anywhere about the waist the wearer preferred, not always in the front. I guess for hiking, a sporran made of soft leather and worn off to one side would work well. From an Aussie saddlemaker.

There is no need to justify a utility kilt. Like hiking barefoot it's a thing a few consider the most practical for hiking. And while I've been hiking barefoot for years I've just acquired a utility kilt that I'm looking forward to wearing on my hikes. Naturally there's no friction and no heat build-up, so it seems like a great solution for summer hikes.
Mine has belt loops so I guess I'm wearing a belt with it even though it fits quite well without one. The rings are also quite practical, the one in the rear allowing for a furry pleasure of mine ... wearing a tail (not a real fur one of course, no animals were harmed in making it!)
No, I'm not a traditionalist of any kind. I also don't have scottish heritage (as far as I know), my roots go back to north and east Germany and Norway. Now I live in Austria and though I have considered getting the local traditional dress, I decided there are more practical things and I shouldn't pretend to be something I'm not.
A kilt is just a practical item of clothing to wear in a variety of circumstances. Some like to wear it as part of their heritage. I just wear mine without any historical connection.

Kilts are very cool and that's something that will last a lifetime and will never die off as a form of trending fashion. I watch the WWE and Drew McIntyre is always rocking them and he has a cool kilt that's made of leather, that's the coolest one that I've seen so far as that's a great one to see. If you do hike as a man, you will find out how much easier it is when you wear skirts or kilts over shorts or pants.

Hi from Scotland. I have worn a kilt since 3 years old and have always liked wearing kilts. Part of uniform in Scouts and great for all formal occasions. However, because of this for general use I have just got an ex hire good quality PV kilt. In fact it has never been used. To me this is how I want to look because I can't see myself in a utility kilt. I do have the hand made full kilt that was made for my wedding 30 years ago which by the way, fits again..

I’m Asian so guess how much Scottish DNA is in me but the wool blend utility kilt I got recently from the Celtic Croft is amazing. It feels like I’m just wearing my undies without actually being just in them. Plan on using for hiking purposes mostly. After seeing Ncuti Gatwa in a kilt as the doctor I been interested again. Now gonna need a kilt belt & a hanger but worth it.

I looked up the definition of Kilt in the two dictionaries from Great Britain which would be the Oxford and the Cambridge dictionaries. They may know best being the local source. They defined a kilt as *: a skirt with many folds, made from tartan cloth and traditionally worn by Scottish men and boys* ,.... Do what you wish and enjoy , but there it is. By the way, most people who hike usually do not wear cotton due to its poor performance vs wool or synthetics. I see the Sportkilt company makes actual kilts out of wicking fabric specifically designed for hiking.

The kilt you show in the video is a single color. I'm looking at getting a utility kilt in the clan tartan. This will be my first kilt and I'm still figuring things out. I understand there's not a lot of tradition surrounding utility kilts so hopefully it'll be versatile enough that I can justify the costs.

Everything about your outfit was fine 👍. Different kilts/shirts/shoes for the appropriate occasion. For the sporan just slide it to one side when hiking . Apparently in Scotland they wear tartans that match their clothing for the occasion even if it’s another family tartan.I have one kilt with my family tartan but never wear it. I live in Hawaii and I think the local culture here would be accepting to it.

Some people are miserable and they like to try their best to make others miserable or to assert their "superiority". Never understood the kilt police as most Scots wear the kilt they like the colors of and know little to nothing of "their clan". And they only wear them for speacial occassions. "Bless your heart" is a good southern response to those who care about what you wear.
I don't own a kilt but plan to buy one or 2 PV kikts in a few weeks with hopes of my clan tartan in the future. I have 3 Scot lines in my ancestry that I know of with one by way of Ulster. Also one Irish ancestor. Kilts are kilts whether Scottish wool clan tartan, universal or utility kilts. Enjoy what you like or in many cases what you can afford. Bless the hearts of the kilt police or haters.
By the way ghillie brogues aren't traditional. They're an attempt to recreate a semblence of the shoes worn by highlanders. And the people who hike with a sporran usually wear it to the side. Or use a belt pouch on the side instead.

Just go for it. There is no rule that you need to have celtic roots.
Do it bud, there's no law that says you have to be Scottish to wear kilts. Whether you wear a traditional style wool or PV kilt or a UT kilt style, enjoy!
Lack of money is the only reason I am kiltless. Have several ancestors who came across the pond. There are US kilt makers like USA Kilts, but even a polyviscous kilt is out of my price range for now. May try a utility kilt.

I’m trying to understand the utility of it. When I go hiking I’m worried about ticks and poison ivy. For those concerns seems a better idea to wear pants and tall socks.

Utility kilts have just never been comfortable to me, they don't tend to hang well in my opinion, but I appreciate them, and I certainly don't agree that they're abominable. For me, a poly viscous feilidh mhor or feilidh beag feel much better, and have the same machine washable convenience of utility kilts. Of course, one needs a sporran with those, but I don't find it to be an inconvenience for me, if im moving fast ill put it on my belt instead of on a chain.

I’m not a fan of utility kilts. Possibly because I’m more used to regular kilts and the feeling wearing one is different from wearing a utility. One thing that always irritates me is why the aprons aren’t wider. A great garment for some, but sorry not for me.

My style is more late Victorian/Early Edwardian for the most part, so I guess you could label me a 'traditionalist'... I am of the mind that whatever gets people into kilting is a good thing.

I'm not sure what the difference is between a kilt and a skirt. I call what I wear a skirt and make them and other clothing from recycled fabric. I make them a bit longer that the kilts I've seen.

Here is the truth: Utility Kilts are American. Made in the USA in 1999(?). They are not meant to be traditional kilts like that of the UK. Traditional Kilts are beautiful, and of course come with dose and don't; however, the utility kilts are a different beast and so no traditionalist have a leg to stand on when it comes to the "customs" and "ediquette" of utility kilts. Be respectful of both and lets all enjoy wearin' our kilts outside of bashin' each other. :D
