  • Sonny Liston 220 lbs lost to Leotis Martin 199 lbs by KO at 1:08 in round 9 of 12
    Date: 1969-12-06
Location: International Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
    NABF Heavyweight Title (Vacant title).
    Inaugural NABF title fight.
Martin was ranked third by the WBA, and Liston was ranked fifth.
    Liston was a 13-5 favorite.
Since losing to Muhammad Ali in 1965, Liston had won 14 consecutive fights, 13 by knockout.
Liston knocked Martin on the seat of his trunks at 2:11 of the fourth round with a left hook to the jaw. He was up quickly and didn't appear badly hurt.
Martin, behind on points, knocked out Liston at 1:08 of the ninth round. He hurt Liston with a vicious right and followed up with a left hook and another right. Liston went down flat on his face and was counted out.
This was Martin's last fight. He was forced to retire due to a detached retina he suffered in this bout.
    Post fight comments:
"I want either Frazier or Ellis next." - Leotis Martin
"I don't know. Sonny was winning easy until those lucky punches. If he had been beaten all the way I might say he would quit but not this way." -Dick Sadler, Liston's manager, when asked if Liston would retire.
"He was out for a long time. He only came to when his seconds gave him a second shot of smelling salts." -Dr. Donald Romeo, on Liston's condition
"Maybe Sonny Liston will get a title shot now that we lost today...because we sure couldn't get one while we were winning." -Dick Sadler

Let me educate all of you about what happened in this fight. Sonny Liston had the FLU 2 weeks before this fight. The opportunity for this fight came to him as a surprise. George Foreman and long long time corner man Johnny Natches confirmed that. Liston never said a word about it , but sent a Christmas present to leotis to congratulate him. He did not want to take ANY credit away from leotis. The primary reason he took the fight on short notice was because in the audience was Yank Durham with a contract for a title fight. After being denied a chance in the tournament because NAT Filcher took away his rating after LewistonMaine. This never happened ever before. Nat Hated Liston with a passion. He was Finally getting his chance after being forced to fight second hand boxers in Sweden. So , it was not a fixed fight , however , we are going to take his rating and license away Did they take Patterson license away when Liston destroyed him ? Of course not. Anyone who has had the flu knows that when you get over it takes while to get back to normal let alone box. If you watch the fight you will notice that was as if someone pulled a switch off on Sonny’s energy He got KOed after dominating the fight. Another brutal chapter in the horrible fate filled things that happened to this good man. That’s what happened. Period

If this woulda been Liston at 30 years old, Martin woulda been just another KO. Shows more than ever how difficult it was for near 46 year old George Foreman to regain the championship. Foremans strength, and his unbelievable willpower and self confidence, are what beat Moorer. Makes you wonder just how old Liston really was in this fight. Also makes you wonder what he could've achieved if Dundee was in his corner, along with the public. Liston had a 7 foot (84") reach, and the biggest fists in boxing-They were HUGE!! Ron Lyle was popular with the fans just 10-15 years later, and he was a more violent criminal than Liston. IIRC, Lyle committed murder, which Sonny never did. Liston also never caught a break. Like Sonny once said, tragically, "The only thing my old man ever gave me was a beating." How sad.....

  • @lastrada52
    @lastrada52 Год назад +4

That's all Sonny Liston really had -- intimidation and a jab. Look at his record -- he fought no one. Yes, you'd probably say Floyd Patterson -- but Sonny was definitely too tough for Patterson. Ali? Can't really say that because Ali was fresh, young, untested, and beat Sonny twice. It took Sonny 10 rounds to get Chuck Wepner to quit on his stool. Cleveland Williams & Zora Foley were the best on his list -- but their careers went nowhere. So -- who did Sonny Liston fight? Who did he beat?
Leotis Martin knocked Sonny out cold. With a combination, not luck.
So with all the excuses that can be mustered, Sonny's too old (age didn't matter to Foreman), he's powerful, longer reach than God. But he showed no real skills in this fight. In this fight, his left is extremely low. Sonny was vulnerable to many things. I didn't see him use uppercuts, left hooks, or combinations. But it was Leotis' combination that put Sonny down. If you look close -- Sonny's face is bloody. That means Leotis' punches were getting through & he was consistent. Leotis didn't even hit as hard as a Rocky Marciano or Jack Dempsey would.
Oh -- Marciano was too small. Then you never got hit by a man who knew how to throw 186 lbs behind a single punch. Was as fresh in the 15th round as he was in the first. That was conditioning, stamina, enthusiasm, aggressiveness, training & endurance. Not to forget natural strength in both hands. Unmatched. Sonny Liston never came up against anything like that.
A fighter only has to land one solid shot on a man's jaw, cheek, head, or solar plexus. None of that is protected by reach, strength, speed, intimidation, or what's laughable -- a big fist. Big deal. The fists go into a glove -- the big equalizer. Marciano shattered Roland LaStarza's facial bones with a single punch. Primo Carnera had a big fist too but he backed it up (the most KOs in the heavyweight division in history).
It's what comes behind that fist that counts. Sonny Liston was a big tough guy but he's not even in the top 25 best heavyweights because of a lack of real skill & that lame record of names (some I never heard of).
And I may add at this point, I happened to like Sonny Liston. Thought he had a rough life growing up and made something of himself. Maybe if he were better managed he would have been a far more respected fighter with style. When I was in the fight game 200 years ago my Uncle who sparred with Jack Dempsey said not to let anyone intimidate me in the ring. They're just men. Men bleed. They can be stopped. If not with fists with skill. Muhammad Ali probably knew this, and Rocky Marciano & Dempsey certainly did.
Before you challenge me on Liston -- do some studying on past heavyweights, their records, their KO's, their skills, who they met & the grueling matches they may have gone through. You'll be surprised.
Tyson Fury ain't in that club.

Liston wasn't too well in this fight ...he tried to post pone it ....but he made amends in the rematch .....Liston was a better fighter that George ....Ali said of him "he's the 2nd greatest" ....Mike Tyson said that Liston made him look like a boy scout.....there were other top boxers who didn't want to be in the same street as Liston ......he is in the top 5 in my books and would go through today's contenders like a packet of Epsom Salts .......

    • @lastrada52
      @lastrada52 Год назад

      @@brucelennon9224 - Doubtful Bruce...but that's fine I respect your opinion.
But Sonny's record doesn't show that kind of success. "Other fighters said..." -- that's just an opinion but it was Ali who had to take 2 days off from filming the computer fight with 40-year-old Rocky Marciano because he couldn't raise his arms. And he was in top shape at the time & young.
Sonny Liston had a fearful reputation, a good scowl, and intimidating but that didn't win fights. It scared fighters who probably shouldn't have been in the ring, to begin with.
If you box, you take on all comers. Of course, business-wise the fighters have to fight contenders, ranked fighters. That's where the bucks are.
For such a fearsome heavyweight Sonny wasn't champion very long & he never even regained the title. He'd be lucky to make the Top 40 & it wouldn't be on skill.

@@colinloyd6718 -Who did Ali fight? Lots of second-rate fighters, some unranked, and every fighter has a bum column. But Rocky fought who was available at the time, dodged no one.
Many were former champions, many were ranked in the Top 10, and many were KO artists (Roland LaStarza) was no old man. The British Heavyweight Champion was no old man. Jersey Joe Walcott was a powerhouse even at the age he was.
Joe Louis was younger than George Foreman when Foreman won the Championship again. Ezzard Charles was no old man. Jersey Joe Walcott was the champion at the time Rocky beat him.
Not one of the fighters Rocky fought would YOU get in the ring with Colin. Not one. They were all proficient, proven, solid fighters with impressive records.
Many of your heroes including Ali & Larry Holmes all fought past those men's ages.
You fight who qualifies, who's ranked, and available. Rocky dodged no one. And many of them were taller, weighed more & had more experience. That's a tired excuse saying he fought only old men. Because it isn't true.
What constitutes an old man? Would you say that to George Foreman when he fought Evander Holyfield? And Foreman defeated Michael Moorer at 45 to become the oldest heavyweight champion.
I used to box. You're basically an old man if the fight goes long. But an old man with skill could catch you early -- so be mindful of that. I see some unprofessional old men in those scrap yard fights beating the shit out of 23-year-olds. Endurance, skill, aggression, power -- Rocky had that talent naturally.
And you forget one important fact -- Rocky himself was older. He only started to fight at 23. He fought Louis when he was already 28. That's up there. Muhammad Ali started to fight at 12. At 18 he won Olympic gold. See the contrast?
Don't get in the ring with any old man boxer because you'll be surprised just how fast & hard they can still punch.
Hell, Jack Dempsey did it when he was in his 80s when two 20-year-olds mugged him for his watch. He knocked out both of them in the street. Got his watch back. Don't believe me? Look it up -- the newspaper articles are still online.
