the games development started in 2009 I think and single the dev did everything from scratch and he started programing in the early 90s. So its basically an actual retro game only that its development was slow and on old code. Thats why it released only a few years ago.

48:49 "I like the idea of just constantly dying of radiation in space and being like 'Aw shit I need my insulin'" Yep, that's the game. That's literally the entire game lol.
I found this game a few years ago and love the vibe of it. The mechanics of moving things around your ship is so satisfying, way more than a typical game that would just have you do it all in one boring mouse-driven UI. And those "special" events that can happen are just fantastic. My only main gripe with the game is the mandatory time limit via the radiation. I wish there was an option to just turn that off and play casually, but nope.
You can play for a long time, you'll just get a bad score, but you can pretty much completely fill the ships cargo hold before 85% radiation if you're good.
@@PDuo score is relative, your ending is based on radiation level and loot gained, an endless mode would break the end score. But you can play and explore for hours if you arent good and just explore the semirandom generated lore.
@@Kektus1 pretty sure the game has bare texture files, the dev recently changed the medbay because a redditor said they would get sued by the red cross or some nonsense. song story short I just dropped the old texture over the new one and its fine. I'm so happy that he sat down and played this one. It's a bit tricky to get into, very old style inventory management and hard-punishes fucking up, but Scavenger Sv-4 is legitimately one of my favorite indie horrors because of the Epilogues. Every story is a bit different, every venture guarantees a cool little 30-minutes-to-an-hour adventure, and it all wraps up with a satisfying story. Super excited for the miniseries he mentioned. This game can get pretty spooky. Makes me wish for a remaster/expansion.
i have spoiled myself with one spook so far (The alien stowaway) and the design isnt as scary as i suspected from such buildup. Not anything bad towards the game, but i REALLY hope the scares are as good as everyone says.
You don't need to watch things research, just hit research all and send the rover back out immediately. Most things will be done researching by the next time your rover comes back
You can always ditch the compass, map, and status display to make more space for loot. You can check the map from the ship console and there's no point in doubling back to areas with no loot. I also get rid of the power controller to make space for the weapon because if you make enough power the power controller is unnecessary
fps wise you gotta turn LOD to medium and cast shadows to sun only. I legitimately think the higher settings should be removed because it wont run on even a modern supercomputer. you mgiht need to do a patch if you are crashing with textures set to "insane". its just a generic 4gb 32 patcher like everyone used for fallout nv.
The end/Final Score screen reminds me of a much older game called "Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space". It was an event-based game that played almost like a boardgame.
This game is really cool. I tried playing it but I didn't get far but I'd love to watch you play more of it Joel. Very fun to watch you learn the game.
regarding the story at 1:00:18 holy shit playing habbo hotel on a friends PC was my first internet experience as well, we haven't had internet in our home at that time and it was mindboggling. I talked to a guy that said he was 24 and I told him something like "yo I didn't know people that old are on the internet" (I was like 12 or 13 at that time). I went to my friends house daily and we did nothing but hang out in habbo hotel
I played this game a lot, to the point of being able to speed run it, the lore is a bit funny and changes a little each time, but the gist is space is heavily explored and there is ftl travel, noone believes aliens exist but you get a tip they do or are just a wandering explorer and end up at the planet, and the planet is post apocalyptic after a nuclear war maybe, the lore of the dead aliens seems to be along the lines of they were some kind of species with trinary symmetry body plans, and they were wiped out after what seems to be an Ai uprising and or civil war maybe.
@@Twitch380 it has quite a few "special" endings depending on some factors (the best part), mostly specific items from what I know, but also there are unique death endings.
@@Twitch380 No point, your ship plus rover only functionally has 30 slots to store stuff to bring back, and you can easily get 30 items in 30 minutes, which if you use the medbay all the time lets you leave with 80% health and a great score if you also ran into the random event items. You can learn the "story" of the aliens by reading descriptions of items you get and putting them on the rover to read. I think if you follow the locater item it can bring you to a really rare artifact with more lore but I've only seen it twice
Now I really want to see a whole series of this game but I feel like it might be both too similar to VotV and too slow paced to be a big hit. Hopefully I'm wrong or Joel likes it enough to keep playing anyway.
Joel how do you feel about... Joel did you watch.... Joel you should play... The stream Stupid useless chat just using the stream as a Q&A with boring mainstream questions that only distract Joel. I've never seen Joel this Distracted and Absent-minded in my 12 years of watching him.

I really love how this game tries for an early 2000’s System Shock 2 Esq. Aesthetic as opposed to a Retro PS1 thing so many indie games go for.
It's oddly quite refreshing.
(And nostalgic too!)
