Wow that was like me when i learned last year but was riding in 2 days. Lots of crashes but the key is the short mast and correct foil placement on the board.
Guys, another amazing one! What hydrofoil did you pick to learn? Any updated recommendations for a beginner foil and board that doesn’t cost you a kidney? Also something moderate in bulkiness?
Thanks! We learned on the CR:X - simply because our local kite shop had an awesome deal on them at the time. Since then we have sold that board and now use RDB foils (medium and large wing). You can definitely learn on this board, and price wise it’s not as expensive as other brand names. That being said, most entry level foilboards are perfectly fine to learn on. If you can get a good price that’s usually the way to go so it’s not as painful if you scratch or damage it as you learn :)
Thanks, hope the tips work out for you like they did for us! We didn't try the board completely strapless. The majority of the time riding though only the front foot was in the strap so it's probably not very difficult to go completely strapless... we'll have to try it next time though! :)
Great video.I try to learning foilboard aswell, do you think Duotone rebel 12m suitable for foiling? Even in the light wind day and I’m a 63kg. Any advice…thanks
Thanks! Yes a 12m Duotone Rebel should be fine for foiling. You’ll just have to find the right wind range for it for your size and your wing size. When learning it’s better to have at least enough wind so that your kite stays at 12 without falling. Side shore wind is also preferable for learning.
Serious question by a relative newbie: what's the point of a huge chicken loop when you're flying a gigantic foil kite with a foil board? Just in case you might suddenly have the urge to bust out some unhooked moves? Why aren't the lines attached to the harness more directly. With appropriate quick release of course..
We thought it might be poor quality as the board is ridiculously cheap ($799 CAD), but we were impressed with the craftsmanship. Quality is good, especially the foil itself seems to be very well made. The board is alright, bindings - while good quality - aren't the most comfortable. One thing that we noticed is that with the long mast the board tips over and it's very hard to put your feet in the straps. A surfboard, which is more buoyant, might be a better fit for a foil board. That being said, we recommend the board to all of our friends interested in foilboarding.
I observe cavitation starting near the tips of the foil - watch in the overhead shots near the end of the video... maybe that is a rider weighting issue which initiated the cavitation maybe not.
Hi, really liked your video. So in a 7 knot wind, with the short mast, what size kite did you use ? Plus, even as a kite surfing beginner on a twin tip, do you recommend giving foiling a go ? Cheers, Roger
thanks regornel, in 7 knots of wind in this video we used flysurfer speed 5 15m kite. To answer your second question, I think you can give a foiling a go if you feel like you got the kite control down, if not maybe wait until you perfect it (able to kite on twin tip without ever looking at a kite), then proceed with foiling.
Thanks - it was really fun!! The short mast is easier to get going on for sure. It's not required - we have a couple friends who have learned to foil without it, but we found it to speed up the process. The short mast also lets you learn in shallower water, which is nice too. Have fun learning to foil, let us know how it goes! :)
I've received my package today and it turns out I've got a massive mast! You think I can learn with that one straight away or is a shorter one necessary in the beginning?
Hi! I am from Canada my goal is to spend 2 weeks in Cuba learning to kite surf...! Never tried, wanted to for a kong time. Was thinking it might be worth investing in equipment before I go? Any suggestions on a full package beginner equipment? Board, kite ect ect?
If you’ve never tried, I’d recommend renting your gear. There are some kite schools there that you can rent from in Cuba. It’s good to try different kites before you buy :)
Good video. But there is not right board for kitefoil learn. Need to use a bigger volumed board (i.e. 5.5 - 6 ft and 35-45 liters volume) with high rockered front tip. There is much easier to learn with that. Second is kite - LEI kite (or high aspect parafoil) seating higher in the wind window and it is much easier to control board rise.
Thanks for the comment. At the time we didn’t know any better and frankly only picked up this specific setup because it was on sale :) we have since upgraded to higher volume boards and found them to be much better for progression!
It’s probably not a necessary purchase, especially if you’re learning in deep water. That being said, without a short mast we would’ve struggled in Cayo Guillermo so it was worth the $40 for us
Great videos as always love following you guys when I’m land locked
Thanks so much! :)

Short mast and correct placement of feet on the board were a key for us 🙂

Nice ive always wanted to try foiling
I can't wait to try my CR:X board. The tips that you got and relayed in your video sound great. Did you try the board strapless?

Great video, keep up good work!
thanks Marcin
Lol this feels like what I'm going through right now with the foil. Feels so hard to lock in the balance point for long rides.
How much was it to check the kite bag and who did you fly with?
Nice to see the new CRX.
We flew with Air Canada and the checked bag was included. Yeah, we're loving the CR-X & expect to see a lot of them on the water this summer!

Universal bars. Chicken loop is also good for easy switching of the kite to another rider
Great video.
What's your overall impressions on the CRX foil board ?
I'm also thinking about getting one. Cheers

Awesome learning curve :) Best without straps ! and with a longer mast would be more easy
Thanks! Yes, the longer mast was so much easier once we got back to Ontario. It was just too shallow for it in Cayo Guillermo !

If you guy's ever have the chance , try Brazil !
You made it look really fun. So you recommend staring with short mass? Did it speed up the learning process? I'm inspire,
THANKS!!

You can learn on a large mast. Tbh the short mast is pretty much useless once you’ve learned. Just avoid shallow areas and you should be fine :)
@@OurKiteLife nice! Thanks for the info!!
Rear strap on foil board is a hazard for pulling the psoas muscle.
Good to know - thanks!
Just my painful experience. Had to use naproxen for a month to be able to walk.
Ouch! Hope you're doing better now!
Oh yea. Years ago. Since then I stopped learning to foil. Because I had to travel without it. Perfectly happy on twin tip and skimboard.

Awesome. You made look easy! It’s not...oh boy
What kind of camera do you use?
sony rx10 mark 2
Two days of foiling and no better yet
Keep at it!
Gee, how many days did she piss away to get over herself before she could learn something??
Not very effective to waste your money on shorter mask as you learn quick and then you find your self top the mask out of the water
It’s probably not a necessary purchase, especially if you’re learning in deep water. That being said, without a short mast we would’ve struggled in Cayo Guillermo so it was worth the $40 for us
That is why I don't think 40cm is good for learning - you rise and fall to quick
he is dead
