Yes, it became a Christian a holiday when England wanted to convert the northern Europeans. They adopted Norse holidays to make it easier for them, I believe this was around the 1100s time frame. You'll see very similar holidays that were typically put before or in the middle of harsh seasons where a select group of essential resources are hard to come by, these holidays were often to help folks keep moral up through the harsher season, especially the women and kids at those times. A starving village that has good moral is always easier to maintain compared to one with bad moral.
