While I do really love the episodes where craig is just hanging out with mates like in Nashville because they‘re just so funny and entertaining, there is something about these episodes with guests from bands Craig looks up to or loves. You can really see his excitement in this episode just like with Mario from Gojira earlier this year! This makes the podcast feel so genuine on multiple levels, I love it
I think the combination of maximum, high-effort production quality with super chill, relaxed, engaging conversations is what makes this podcast fucking awesome
Incredible all round. Quality of the pod, my favourite band, and Dan just seems like such a chill dude. Ridiculous that he recorded the 3 previous records without click in mostly one take!
This might be my favorite episode ever. Looks like a movie, sounds amazing, endlessly interesting stories and lore. Side note, I hope deafheaven is around forever.
Killer episode, I really love hearing black metal musicians talk about their process. Also everyone else is saying it but I’ll pile on, the set and lighting is immaculate
I really dont know how Dan walks after playing a song, let alone a fucking show. Saw them in queens ny this past december and it was fucking incredible. fucking love deafheaven. i ran into the drummer and bass player from baroness at that show too it was fucking sick. saw them as well 2 weeks earlier in nyc.
I met Dan at one of their New Bermuda shows last in Dallas, it was raining outside and also hot as fuck and it was just a thick nasty dark atmosphere, him and George walked outside before the gig and I went up to him and shook his hand and thanked him for his incredible drumming. He was really nice and sociable despite the agonizing weather and temperature. It for the mood of that album though.
Same experience here! Met them after their show here in Amsterdam few years ago and the weather was fucking shitty, they still came out to have a chat with us and Dan and George in particular were really nice and chatty to us. Kerry and Shiv were a bit more reserved I'd say, but all of them were super chill. I still got my signed ticket too!
Outstanding interview. I can watch another hour six of Craig and Dan talking music, drums and movies. I've been a big fan of Deafheaven for years and a big fan of Dan even longer. One of the best drummers in the biz. Period. Thanks again for the cool listen (and watch)!
I remember seeing Deafheaven for the first time. Was just getting into metal and had to see Slipknot in OKC. I didnt see any openers on the ticket so I thought it was just Slipknot performing. I remember seeing this band come on, and everyone was just standing there for awhile. All I remember was black metal, then crazy random beautiful soft spot in the song. Later found out it was “Luna” My friend and I were talking about them on the way home and I just kept putting it on, trying to understand the music. After two months passed it clicked with Vertigo. I still remember every feeling and senses I felt when all of these tracks hit. After awhile of not hearing it, I will get smells of the cold wind chill air when I first “felt” the soundscape of vertigo. Crazy that music or sounds can even do that shit lol. Solid band, solid dude, solid switch up with the last record. Have always appreciated and admired their work. Edit: also adding that when I was at a waterpark, I was like 22 at the time. Had a decent amount of beers and fell asleep listening to the Sunbather album. absolutely COOKED my skin out there. Sunburn on the feet is atrocious and highly don’t recommend.
i absolutely love this podcast it gives me life and the best thing is it keeps getting better and better every time i think the quality has reached the max
Set up looks sick mate! Love how you're always levelling up! Doesn't feel like ages ago I was listening to the audio only on my phone so it's great to see where the podcast is now 🤟
Thanks SO MUCH for this one Craig! For the first time in my life, I'm seeing two bands at separate venues on the same night. Denver, December 13, catching Stray and then leaving to catch Deafheaven. First time seeing either band.
Dan seems like such an awesome person. The moment he told his Lars story was flashback moment for me, because back in the day I saw a picture of that moment on Twitter and it blew my mind. P.s. Infinite Granite is a great fucking album and I love it front to back.
The Meinl story is so hilarious and ridiculous, good for them and good for you, I’m a Zildjian artist too from Taiwan 🇹🇼 love your podcast, keep up the good work!
everyone knew Deafheaven were Bay Area boys (a good friend of mine even worked at the same Whole Foods that George and Kerry worked at on Market St. in SF), but i had no idea Dan was from San Ramon and took lessons in Dublin. i'm pretty sure the music store he was talking about was Hertlein Guitars - previously called something else - on Dublin Blvd., i used to take lessons there too and still drive past the building on my way to work every day. to think we mightve crossed paths there when i was a kid is crazy to think about.
Good Crack! Love the F2F in the home studio, by now you have to be considering moving to Nashville. Hey you should flex your big brain jazz muscles and go on the 80/20 podcast. Look to sweeten the deal I’ll sign up for the Patreon and get one of your badass hoodies if you do…..just saying
That’s wild how Meinl was angry about saying another company had nice cymbals (ironically for Craig, from a Sleep Token video 🤣) Doesn’t make any sense. it’s ok for other good brands to co-exist, why get butthurt when you even just mention another company 🤦♂️
Dude after hearing you guys talk about that fi3ld recording from the ghetto of san Francisco that lead into the pecan song....i had to look at the lyrics on metal archives. which btw thanks Craig for context on hearing a drug deal happening...cuz th3 way the lyrics are just there....i knew i wasnt reading / singing a song...
If anyone is curious to experience what I just did...... Here are the lyrics to track 6 off of Sunbather. Which I'm also gonna say is a decent album. Even if u hear it as a fan of Black Metal. I feel half bad for the crap rep they got when they released the pink album unto a sea of elitists. So if that hype washed over u... just go into it blind. NOW I won't to this far BUT...had they not decided to go with the pink cover, people could have heard the genius of the band like with Agalloch. (I just mean how is Agalloch seen as legends....but deafheaven had to deal with all this. And B4 anyone starts, they don't sound like Agalloch. Agalloch play black metal in the woods of Oregon....Deafheaven play blackgaze in the mean streets of San Francisco!!!if it weren't for the hype of blackgaze, so many could have just listened to this album. Instead of going into it with the notion it's not metal. Cuz who cares. It's rock with metal elements..... with interludes ripe with live drug sales. 6. Windows 04:43 Hide lyrics Hey, what's up man? The quality is ridiculously good. Craig, you have no equal in the podcast game.
drank my first full four loko and watched this band without listening to a single song beforehand... pretty religious experience would recommend.

You know this is a professional podcast when a guest can say “Problematic wood” and Craig doesn’t give a least an audible chortle.
POSSESSION RULES

Hey, what's up man?
I need three, you got em' with you?
Okay, but I'm not gonna do any of that waiting around
Uh...
Alright, I got enough for three, that's it, I'm not cashing
I'm telling you man, I can't- I don't think I... I can't cash you out
Alright?
By the precious blood of Jesus Christ
Her sins will be judged
And God will cast you into the lake that burns with fire and brimstone
Where there is weeping, and gnashing of teeth
Where the fire is never quenched and where the worm dieth not
It is a place called Hell, and Hell is real
Jesus spoke more of Hell than he did of Heaven
And the loving warning
Who was warned to flee the wrath of God
The Bible says that because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for the day of wrath
Where God's righteous judgement will be prevailed
God offered you grace and mercy and forgiveness through the gospel
The Bible says the gospel is the power of God and the salvation for all who believe, to the Jews first, and then to the Gentiles
The gospel message, gospel means good news
It's a message of hope, it's a message of God's mercy
It's where God has demonstrated his love, by sending his son, his only begotten son, into the world, to seek and to save the lost
Eight 2-15's? Alright
Alright, man, just to let you know, I've been dicked around before, alright
I know, man, I've just been fucked around before, alright
I've got sixty bucks, that's it, I told you I've got sixty bucks
I've got sixty bucks, that's it, that's all I have, that's the last of my money
