I mean this is literally what trump always does and people are surprised every time. He starts with a crazy ask to get leverage and then is haggled down to some minor improvement that can be shown to the public as a win. It's not insane, it's literally just haggling.
That's a way overly generous interpretation of Trump's decision making process. It's more like he gets held back by the more stable heads around him, the institutionalists that kept the ship running irrespective of who was in charge... all the people that have now been expelled from the Trump bubble and replaced with sycophantic loyalists Vivek) and backstabbing opportunists (Elon) among other such charmful characters in his cabinet, with over 13 billionaires.... But! I think you're onto something about how it works! I just think you've just got the roles wrong... So I have a question, who is he haggling for? Us? The American people Or the 13 billionaires that helped get him elected, and that he has now hired to help run America for the next 4 years? Who was he haggling for when he did the tarrifs last time he was in office that resulted in us sending millions of dollars back to farmers all across America for their lost revenue due to countries no longer importing our agricultural goods, farmers who still now going into Trump's second term have still not been made whole on their lost revenue? Who was he haggling for when he made a permanent tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and gave only a small temporary tax cut to working class people? But like I said I think you're onto something... Let's look at the election as an example. During the election, didn't he haggle with the American voters by "starting with a crazy ask to get leverage" (egg prices will go down, gas prices will go down) only then to admit in an interview a few weeks after he won that he probably can't actually do those things he promised, thus "haggling down to some minor improvement"? But the problem is the last part. It's not the public who sees this as a win. Well, it'd be the egg companies and gas companies who will see that as a win. I'd argue your theory actually makes sense if you think of it like this. He was haggling with the American people on behalf of the corporations that support him, and we're the ones getting haggled down (lied to and cheated) so he can show it to his billionaire buddies (i.e .the American oligarchy) as a win.
You know what? You're right about his strategy, but you're wrong about the who is who. The people he haggled with were the American voters, and he started with his "big offer" of bringing down the prices of eggs and gas and has now haggled us down by admitting that he can't do much to change the prices of goods. The people that are seeing this as an improvement are not the public but the oligarchs that benefit from exorbitant prices, who own the massive agricultural conglomerates and most of the rest of our economy... 13 of whom he has directly appointed to cabinet positions to run the government.

DID YOU KNOW PANAMÁ USED TO BE COLOMBIAN TERRITORY? Anglo America with Roosevelt played another Texas in Colombia, now Panamá. The Unitedstatians picked a bunch of peasants in Panamá, gave them trinkets and told them to revolt and ask for independence from Colombia. That’s how the U.S. were allowed to build a canal and so they recovered the money they spent. The Panamá canal belong to Panamá and *WILL SERVICE THE WHOLE WORLD.* EVERYBODY IS TREATED EQUALLY.
@@yolamontalvan9502 Nope. The trade-off is that the US would help the Panamanians get independence from Colombia, in exchange for the canal zone. Why would they help them for free?

Doesn't make any sense for the United States to be used in such a way. Right now, the USA is done playing nice and now planting it's foot down. Nonsense......built for a friendly nation given independence from Columbia by the US.....condition that it remain in friendly hands......China is not on the list of friendly Militaries
After I found out about the existence of these canals I was in awe. For anyone that doesn't know these canals are basically manmade wormholes to the other side of a continent, without them ships would have to travel around an entire continent just to get to the other side which would cost many days, and millions of dollars.
Its really impressive, specially irl. You can have a tour inside the canal where they show you how they all works. There is this one place called "Ciudad del Saber" inside what used to be an american millitary base (its like a huge park now) and there is a very cool spot I like chilling in to see boats slowly pass through, you can also see the ferrocarril from there.
One little correction The canal was not a “territorial lease” like you said it was actually seceded to the US upon the founding of Panama in exchange for US assistance for Panamanian independence from Colombia. It was incorporated as sovereign US territory. it was then through a gesture of goodwill given to Panama in the 70’s in a treaty that requires certain conditions are met.
Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903, which provided the United States with a 10-mile wide strip of land for the canal, a one-time $10 million payment to Panama, and an annual annuity of $250,000

The lake refilling the canal is itself getting less reliably refilled, and it supplies growing communities. It's not just congestion justifying the high fees
The canal was expanded by the Panamanians in 2016. It had problems with the water levels due to a specialy harsh drought. That was the reason for the longer that usual waiting lines. And we are carbon negative. So not pointing any fingers, but climate change is definatelly not our fault. Nevertheless, there has being a strong anglocentered publicitary campaing against the image of the panamanian administration of the canal. So some how the cause of the problem finds a way to blame us. In fact you seem under the impresion that the crisis is still in effect. That is because while there were a lot of attention placed on the drought-caused lowering in canal crossings per day, there was pretty much none placed on the fact that the drought is over sinces months ago and the lakes are at capacity. 😅
@TonyBro505 You blame the increase of global tempertures and droughts on Panama somehow? The fact is that water is not as plentyfull as it used to be. And the canal for better or for worse needs a lot of water to function. Panama as a country expends huge amounts of its fresh water that could be used for drinking and other needs on every transit that makes it possible for world commerece to happen as easely as it does now. Climate is deffinetly changing. If you think it is not industrialized countries' fault, that is your call. But the problem is real.
@@PAnon-sama then I guess Americans need to get it back and bring in the resources that could prevent more droughts. We will find a way. Plus we can't have more people dropping dead with droughts. Wouldn't do good for trade and business.

@@elbryanto yeah i was thinking that if the Panama Canal gets annexed then too many people would just migrate to other countries like the US, basically would make Panama Venezuela2
A Chinese Company has been contracted to run the canal since 1996. The company employs around 50,000 Chinese Nationals that live and work in Panama. This has provided the cover/ infrastructure for the Chinese Nationals that have migrated illegally to the US.

Fun fact. You actually travel East when you go through the Panama Canal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and West when you go from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. I've gone through it twice and that's pretty neat.

To be honest America also is Panama's defender as Panama has no military and kind of relies on it. It's an unspoken reality that if you rely on someone to defend yourself... you kind of should act in the ones defending you best interest because otherwise you're screwed
It does have military, including US-trained special forces. It also has friends that rely on trade via the canal. Lil' Donna might find out who's backing Panama on this latest troll.
1:10 min observation: No normal Brazilian says "I am American" normally says "I am Brazilian" if talking with some geography dumb says "I am South american.. or Latin American" ... and yeah technically at the MOST superficial level there are two continents named America so people inhabitanting are Americans... continents btw named on honor to an Italian (Americo Vespucci) ... the people US by its foundation didn't had any creativity so named itself with the name of the continent its located.. imagine a country in Europe occupaying ≈ 15% of the place named itself Europe💀
That last part about "15%" makes no sense since in English they're considered two continents, not one. So the US is taking up 80% of North America, hence them being called "Americans" makes sense.
Passage costs are about $10 per tonne. The canal opened at around $3.25/tonne, which would be $38 in today's money. Lil' Donna doesn't know what he's talking about.
Shipping in general has gotten much cheaper, it’s about proportional cost. like basically everything related to the economy you can’t just convert figures with inflation alone accounted for.
@@GeldUndKokaine-kc1hp True, it's never that simple. Trump told a conservative conference in Arizona that Panama was charging US ships "ridiculous, highly unfair" fees. He's had more to say, but we wouldn't want to advance on a false premise, would we.
The thing about soft power is that it hasn't been working. Clearly, if we have these unfavorable trade deals and severely unbalanced defense deals and the such, our "friends" have been taking advantage of our unwillingness to resort to hard power. By threatening it, at least giving the perception that there is a true line in the sand, we can maybe start turning these deals back to a more fair position. The only people who think Trump would actually invade Panama are the ones who hate him to an unreasonable degree and are willing to jump on anything to insinuate anything negative about him. Fortunately for Trump, that's a significant portion of the world, so he can use it to his advantage.
7:00 The only reason why Suez canal is not owned by UK and is open to all ships is because UK was the main loser of WW2 and USA was the main victor, that established laws that guarantees open access to ships for trade and from which USA profited the most in post-WW2 world, as it had main manufacturing power to provide goods. China did not win world war and it decides nothing - USA made China as "factory of the world" provided that it plays by rules - by US rules. Trump is reminding in least elegant way that USA is top dog on this planet. PS I am not American, I do not always agree with what I observe. World is not fair - it is what it is but not all the people fully understands how it functions and what Trump can do, does not equate that other equally dumb people can do as well as they are not given representation what Trump has.
"UK the main loser" idk man, Germany lost significantly more. I'd argue that the USSR is the main loser. Even in the modern-day the echo caused by operation barbarossa is felt.
@@Leecostomo UK lost colonies and ceased to exist as British Empire - and it had the largest market all closed for others and USA gained access to all that after WW2. These are not even my thought - it is a known fact, that UK was the biggest loser of all the participants in WW2. Yes, they did not lost that many people compared to Soviet losses, but apart from human lives they lost everything. Soviet Union unfortunatelly was not a loser - it gained new slaves and new territories, though Stalin was clearly preparing to a war to get significantly more(whole Europe) - than they gained, but it was not a loss from our POV. Though, If you are refering that Soviet Union lost soldiers, then many of them were not Soviet in the first place - my grandfather was conscripted regardless what he would have thought about Soviet rights to conscript colonized people, so any loss in that case would have not been Soviet loss in the first place. Also, according to the Soviet rate of loss of soldiers during the war they still did very fine, but what you are hearing and parroting about "lost lives of Soviet soldiers liberating people from Nazis and all the terrible future" is a pure propaganda. Any liberator that does not leave after liberating becomes oppressing nazis themselves. I know it is magic, but those are the rules.
@ewfse364u35jh Yeah you're proabably right about UK being the greatest loser post-war, although they are still reaping benefits from from once being a colonial power (english being a global language, thus the 3rd world brain drain favours them and the US. Plus the way they built the economies of their colonies means that they have a bad time as independent nations, which means countries like the UK can now establish favourable trade deals with former colonies, like Cameroon and Ghana. And with former-colonies that are now nations with developed economies like Australia and New Zealand they can establish trade deals because of the good relations with them.) Also when I mention the USSR, I'm talking about the fact that USSR-participation in WW2 wasnt beneficial to Russia (and other soviet states) as a country in the modern day. The demografic impact can still be felt today. I do not see the USSR as a "liberational force" in the war, but the war was still fought in the eastern front with soviet blood. Most sources im looking at rn say 8.7 million soldiers conscripted by the soviet union died (a majority of them proabably russian, considering that it was the predominant ethnic group in the USSR, although maybe a larger percentage of other ethnicities might have been conscripted (especially since I imagine the average age of a siberian or an asian from central asia would proabably be lower considering those areas were less developed).
I find it very telling that Americans will argue that they should own the Canal because they paid for it (not even the full thing today, as it was extebded by Panama, and only a fraction of today's trade could be confucted without that extension) and as soon as people point out the hypocrisy, since a lot of what the US has today, including their independence, was in part or in full payrolled by other countries, they default to "come and take it then". This is literally gunship diplomacy, brought to you by the President of Peace, Donald Trump. Say what you want about economic benefits and "might makes right". Truth is, this is just a double standard and lying about election promises. If the people that support this idea can't at least own that, then there's nothing good to say about their honesty or integrity.

The St. Lawrence Canals would be 3rd important in my opinion. That connects cities like Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, and Montreal to the world. Also, each of those rust belt states have economies stronger than most European nations. Cincinnati, Ohio benefits from the waterways just as much as every us city within driving/rail distance of those great lakes. Chicago is a major rail hub for getting goods to and from the St Lawrence waterways
I vote for the grand canal. China didn't have a Mississippi so they built one 2000 years ago, and it is the principal reason it has remained one nation through the ages.
You failed to mention that even though the construction of the Panama is considered american, most of the workers were panamenians citizens, african slaves, and chinese slaves who were brought into the country, also U.S. didnt 'steal' Panama from Colombia, Panama wanted to be an independent country since Colombia was mistreating them as a department, U.S. just helped Panama gain independence so that they could be in "good terms" with Panama, also U.S. mistreated the Panamenian Citizens, wouldnt met them in unless you were american, and claimed a zone inside of the Panamenian territory even though its clearly an independent country, then Invaded the country with the excuse they wanted to catch Noriega, bombed and left debree in the country and its obvious they did all that to regain conrrol of the canal
I don’t think you have mentioned that soft power also has downsides when overused that are just as bad, give or take better or worse, as overusing hard power. And that’s why Trump does what he does. And we have been exploited so much for so long many of us could care less about the rest of the world’s opinion. For many you all had your chance while we were playing nice. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are managed as a single port (they're adjacent). They should probably be considered together, in a map like the one you showed. Seattle/Tacoma is the other major west coast port.
The Erie Canal is historically important because it made NYC 𝘵𝘩𝘦 big city in its region of the planet and also made several other U.S. cities exist. Not third-place-worthy though, I expect. Something in Asia probably is.
The canal is expensive, and the US is not lead by a single person. The president can be influential but a large number of people working together try hard and make very informative collections of information that generally make it clear that there is usually only one reasonable course of action for most geo-political situations, and in this case I am confident that although the US is interested in projecting influence in the region it also benefits from a stable Panama and a stable Panama needs to be able to charge adequately at the Canal to generate the revenue it requires to maintain the canal and it's own stability. Therefore it is actually in the interests of the US for Panama to be as prosperous as possible given the other geo-politics of the region, namely cartel influence and the general threat of cartel war. Naturally at all times industry will try and get the best price out of the canal but I do not think that the US will project military might to capture the canal unless the region becomes hostile enough to present an existential threat.
The US doesn't like that stability because it encourages population growth and those people are using the same water the canal is using, in a few decades the canal will have to be shut down and Panama will have to change it's economic model to a more sustainable one, but the biggest loser will be the US, they'll be left with no canal and the country divided in 2,

The US had extensive rights over the zone (in perpetuity), but it was not under US sovereignty. Legally it was a concession.
The canal was given by a French man not elected without any representation 9f the panamenian people

The lake refilling the canal is itself getting less reliably refilled, and it supplies growing communities. It's not just congestion justifying the high fees
@@hobog so what your saying is the canal needs better management. And the states has the ability to do so
The canal was expanded by the Panamanians in 2016. 😅
"Climate change is not our fault." Bro you lost me there. That shit is just dead wrong.
@BrandonQuezada-k2v I said "no normal" some do have paranthropos stuff
I believe that calling us citicens "americans" rather than unitedsaters or something like that is better
When has he ever known what he's talking about?
The The Sankey Canal is the most important, it started the industrial revolution back in 1757, England
And with former-colonies that are now nations with developed economies like Australia and New Zealand they can establish trade deals because of the good relations with them.)
Also when I mention the USSR, I'm talking about the fact that USSR-participation in WW2 wasnt beneficial to Russia (and other soviet states) as a country in the modern day.

Yes you are completely right
The US doesn't like that stability because it encourages population growth and those people are using the same water the canal is using, in a few decades the canal will have to be shut down and Panama will have to change it's economic model to a more sustainable one, but the biggest loser will be the US, they'll be left with no canal and the country divided in 2,

For the canal, im going to say something in the Netherlands. I know they are expanding and moderning canals over there so modern ships reach paris
Honestly I would say the third most important cannal in the world is the one connecting the Danube with the Rhine

*WE ARE NOT INVADING PANAMA*
*Again........*
I think it’s based tbh, and I’m not even American
Why? its blatant imperialism
to intervene in a country previously intevened by yout country before, seeting coup to matain your interest?
@ yes.
It's cringe the moment the amerimutts do it
Your presentation style is super upbeat 😅
They forgot who made it 💪
They need to be reminded 🤬
People are learning to ignore MOTUS after continuing to make outrageous statements to lead into a negotiation.
damn never knew Mexico, Panama, Denmark and Canada would be fighting on the same side against the US
More will join if this continues. The US is about to learn why the Roman Empire collapsed.
@@JCardo2502I don't think it will go well for such weak countries tbh
Invading Panama would invoke the Rio Pact.
you need a strong relationship with your allies and your allies have to be strong to stay a superpower. history might repeat itself again
Pissing off everybody including your allies seems like a bold move.
@@the0ne809 it is if he has no plans for new allies
nato is gonna kick america out soon. i look forward to when our countries stop paying america so much money buying all its military equipment
@@the0ne809 What allies?
@@kierano8390 Yeah you are a clown, America IS NATO.
fun fact those cars probably won't be there in Camden in a bit (((:
Brother, we own the of Panama canal for the longest time, because we built the thing.
And they got it back pretty much out of just a generous lease.
And with the idea of building a new Panama through either Mexico or one of their other neighbors to increase the trade route, and because it's becoming A bit of a problem for even the local government to handle both in maintenance and because they've had to flood lakes, which reduces panamas overall size for food and housing in industrial locations. It's probably for the best that Panama. At least gives some control back to the United States. Because they clearly can't handle
It, and it's also pretty much the only thing that's holding the country together. It makes up like ninety percent of their economy
Cool. Take the structure and flop it down some other land the US owns.
@elbryanto you're talking about the Panama now, correct? Yeah, I mean, just rip it down. If they're gonna continue to rip us off, they can't maintain the structure, and they're more than willing to flood most of their country, because they're economy is a monolith economy and basically relies on it solely. I swear if they didn't have it, they'd turn into third world country instantly.
And the US isn't at war at the moment, and we really should start throwing our weight. Around again, especially within the north and south american area, if we want to get the economy back to a stable place
Yeah and it better stays as it is, not being able to enter a big chunk of your own city is not fair, yung panamenian that tried to defend our nationalism got KILLED and that was the event that let us to get the Canal in our hands
@itzangel0735 yeah if they don't got a bit of a deal. We might as well just take it back. Trade it like that one island in the Philippines. When the japanese took over, just f******, fill it with oil and and make the entire canals, structural integrity, which is already crumbling break and then leave and let them deal with the aftermath. We'll just take one through Mexico instead, or what are their other neighbors? Both of which are viable and already looked at options
Is it bad that you are my main news source?
The name of the country is the United States of America, meaning they have the right to claim any territory within the American continent
so true, go off, king
Big brain move eh?
100% brain power moment
thats a nice shiny canal trade lane you got there and it s so shiny
all these lame Europeans in the comments hating on Donald trump lmao. what's the point in having the power of the US if you don't use it to make sure your interests are prioritized around the world?
Right, and the austrian painter was right to use his power with Austria, then Czechoslovakia, then poland. Think for yourself for a second
@@Lucas-po6mn lmao cry more. People like you are why I like him so much.
What's the point of having coherent policies? Hypocrisy is key! Amirite? 🤭
There are lots of tools that the US has to influence the world around it, just as a skilled craftsman will have many different tools that they use to build things. Someone whose only tool is a hammer will never build anything, they'll just destroy what's in front of them until they get tired, having accomplished nothing.
@@Lucas-po6mn ah I see, securing your interests makes you a nazi
I think the Grand Canal of China is extremely important. Also when we building the Russia to US train line?
What a great way to push third nations towards Team China!
China been stealing the resources through debt trap. Its funny you brought up china. Also china is building bases surrounding the panama canal. Which is threat to the United states. We arent playing around anymore.
That´s all America does, they love to push allies away. They need to be reminded why the Roman Empire and British Empire collapsed
Trent and Mersey is the 3rd most important canal
I love the Monroe Doctrine
i dont
@@Quail-Kingwhy not

We could take the canal back in an afternoon. Then head north along the coast to California and Texas. Then we'd REALLY secure the border.
You would run roughshod over Mexico and all the countries in Central America. Securing borders is about the borders you have, and in 1946 we decided those were inviolable.
Sanction and boycott US America.

Minor nitpick. We in North America call every south of Panama the country South America.
You also need to realize that the usa wants partners and friends, just not the ones that show up all the time and drink our beer yet complain why they need to help contribute to the hangout.
Are you trying to be that character from that old show the young ones? Rick with the silent P? LOL! I just could not get over that thought but interesting video. I think Panama hats will come back into style in the states. I wonder how many states we will end up with in these next 4 years?
1:30 Americans*
I would have even accepted "United States Americans" or "United Americans" but United Statesians?? 😂😂
I think this is the right decision as america built that canal and also the largest spender, so not getting a large discount is wrong
