I am lucky. Despite being homeless multiple times and having to deal with undiagnosed "disorders" of the brain (we call this neurodivergent) I managed to get up with minimal help till the final time. Now on disability, in that 900-dollar category since I never could hold down a good job long enough to get higher up.
It is bad enough when a society has a base living wage. In 1980 you could work at McDonalds and afford food + housing. Barely but you could do it with a few dollars left over. Add a part time job of even 8 hours a week and you had spending money.
Today, the base wages people are getting for the lowest end jobs require 90 hours a week to afford the above. No one can keep that up, regardless of how fit you are. If you are already homeless even if you can work, how do you? No showers, no way to wash clothes, it is a huge ask even with assistance of some sort.
Traditional homeless shelters don't work either. But that is an entirely different rant. We can do better, there is no reason to have allowed housing to go from people to companies. We have to either do better or become the villains of our own stories. Will the real Dracula please stand up. That is not the example of a culture we want to be known as.

" In 1980 you could work at McDonalds and afford food + housing."
Do a search on "wages vs productivity chart". Up until about 1975 (war on wages officially started) there was a direct relationship between labor productivity gains and wages paid. Labor shared the bounty. By 1980, wages were flat lining while the productivity of the American worker continued to climb. Decades later wages are still flat and the pricing mechanism is churning out homeless people onto the streets. While we were conditioned to believe money printing is the sole cause of inflation and you can build your way out of a homeless problem while creating more everyday.

My neighbors next door were just served by the sheriff’s department and had to vacate their premises (fortclosure) immediately! We let them put some things in our yard and helped them pack a moving truck to take it to a storage unit
So sad, & they both have jobs
& despite our county having many outlets for resources; there are no resources and rentals are not existent and if so, are super high priced so they’ll be parking their two cars in our driveway to sleep because it’s illegal to park & sleep anywhere
Seriously seeing more and more ppl sleeping rough here every day and more and more ppl at the food pantries and churches needing help that have exhausted all of the help they can receive
    Great information
I’ve witnessed these same things you two are speaking of and it’s ridiculous policy

If we continue to focus exclusively on the unhoused aspect of the extreme disenfranchisement we experience, all that gets accomplished is a very expensive bandage for a gaping wiund. We need agency forst before housing, so we can be a part of the solution. Thats the start we need now in my opinion

10 years living outdoors in my truck in California. No substance abuse problems, college educated, but I am physically disabled. I have tried for 10 years to get some help with housing such as subsidized housing. When you are homeless, it is almost impossible to keep yourself organized. I've been dropped from lists, I've been told the list is being reshuffled and I have to re apply. I've applied for section 8, but I'm told that I havent or that Im not on the list. It's a nightmare. My life force energy is dissapating, may need more spinal surgery for one thing. I get some SSDI benefits and I still work, part time, I'm very limited as to what I can do for work as I cannot stand on my feet for more than 15 minutes. I've travelled around the world and nowhere that I have been have I seen the poor and the homeless treated as badly as they are in the USA. I'm finally letting all my possessions go, so that I can move overseas to another country where I can afford to live on SSDI, but then I have to give up my medical benefits.

There is a complete lie. For every hundred-dollar increase in median rent, homelessness increases by 9%. Who is making money off homelessness? The people that are pushing to criminalize homelessness are investing in the criminalization industrial complex - for-profit prisons. Rent in Raleigh, North Carolina are up 75%. Austin, Texas up 40%. Orlando Florida rents are up 30%. Yup, there's a lot of money being spent trying to solve homelessness and there's more homelessness every single day. It's going to skyrocket.. there's gonna be more homelessness than you can imagine if we don't fix the affordable housing crisis. Nonprofits are doing better than they ever have, but they cannot keep up with homelessness. The mayor of Sacramento said for every person they get off the street, another three people enter into homelessness.

Boise case that came out of the 9th District Supreme Court that in which Grants Pass Oregon and Portland just tried to have that turned. They re-visided it this year and then you will see Seattle follow suit etc. That case began by a group of individuals when were living in vehicles and the city of Boise would not allow them to sleep over night anywhere in the city. Kept running them out. I am 63 yrs old and I and my Husky dog I've had for 11 yrs since he was born are living in my 2018 Nissan Rogue since the pandemic and the rental moratorium lifted. In Vancouver Washington where they immediately started raising rent on everyone. Now at my age any job I have been offered does not qualify me for housing with soaring rent prices it's crazy.

The homeless themselves won't cooperate, and for good reason. But realistically, inequality is what brought this on. The rich have more money than ever, and all they want to do is speculate, to make money for not working. Monopolies attract the best rate of return, so housing has been turned into a monopoly. Those taxes they don't have to pay have turned Real Estate into a gigantic Las Vegas.

The biggest impediment to me getting on my feet again has been pot users smoking indoors, at bus stops, and on public transit. It's insane how common and ubiquitous it is in certain places. I wish I didn't get contact highs so easily. I am actually leaving one city for another and planning to avoid most Airbnbs and the bus. It's hella bonkers and honestly, utterly ridiculous. I wish people would keep their drug of choice to themselves. And yes, contact highs are very much a real, actual thing.

It is not ‘emotionalizing’- this is not connecting to the brain- looking at your past, if you have the time, take a moment and ask yourself- what was the very moment that things/your life started going ‘crazy’…
Admit to yourself, how and why that happened.
That would be a good moment to start with. Don’t give up- the truth is always there…look at yourself…what direction will you take, now? Don’t Don’t give up… here is your chance to change YOUR direction!
I came from nothing… no silver spoon- difficult everything, but just remember, you can make a change, only u.

Each homeless shelter in the U.S.A. receives approximately a typical household income in tax breaks, subsidies, various donations including funds, and both internal and external volunteer opportunities (free manual labor), as well as commercial credit loans for renovations and such per homeless client annually while homeless shelters are at a national avg. "Help Rate" or "Performance Rate" for providing housing assistance of 9% according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data and other reports about the topic with the present state of technology available in 2024 C.E.. I think apprx. 3,250 of apprx. 3,300 U.S. homeless shelters are scams! Thank you for your valuable time and bodily physical energy investment(s) to continue learning more! 🙂

Yeah the sad part is once we put them in foster care we essentially dont do anything to prevent them to be homeless. I literally had a caseworker deny to help pay for trade school , hell they wouldn't even help with transportation and i was in a city with poor public transportation. So it msfe interviewing and applying for jobs almost impossible never mind the fact any job you can get with just a is diploma and no connections wont pay the rent. As i was about to age out of the system instead of helping me with housing shelter etc or employment at a rate i could afford housing they just did what was legally required of them which is to temporarily house you, not to help set you up in a position to afford rent. They just dropp you and say hope you jave family and heres a list of services and you never hear from them again.

California is hopeless for affordable, efficient, low construction cost housing. Vallejo Ca. is a struggling community with chronically low income. They spent $70 million dollars (new construction) for a homeless housing building that will provide 60 living units. At the same time they've got hundreds of homeless living on the streets. Building housing in California for the homeless population is just not sustainable.

I’ve given to gofundmes for homeless vets and given money to street people - because “there for the grace of God” go many of us. No more. First my storage unit was broken into (where there were homeless living adjacent to railroad tracks) and now one of the many phentanyl addicts encamped by my apartment building broke a window on my car and stole $700 worth of property. This time the loss was not insured. Although the $2000 loss from the storage unit was insured, it cost me $900 to move my stuff to a new unit in a better neighborhood. I’m tired of asking employees to unlock items from the CVS and watching dirtbags walk out with armfuls of stolen property. My compassion for the homeless is gone and now I see these addicts as the parasites on society that many of them are. You cannot deny that the homeless commit a lion’s share of property crimes. Working taxpayers are fed up.
