great album, been a fan since Let the Sun Talk. his discography is very good so far, glad to see you giving this a listen. would love that KA double feature you’re planning on as well, his latest album is amazing. Rest in peace 💚
The thing I love about Mavi is you can tell how much he cares about his music but also his fans. Love seeing artists who aren’t afraid of being super emotional. Let the Sun talk next please!
I was so excited to see turning the tables interview and I'm honestly just as excited to see it got you to finally listen. His first album is an undeniable classic in my and many other people's eyes, but I also think while it didn't blow me away as immediately, his second album is equally great, and still hasn't gotten the props it deserves. This album similarly was just good to me at first, bit of a step down, but it's growing on me so much every listen, I love it so much. He's an artist to really come back to and sit with repeatedly imo, you start to feel it on a deeper level.
Thank you for your perspective in 20,000 Leagues, I needed to hear that. The entire through line of self realization and family are all things that hit a little too close to home but in a good way. Great album
Really enjoyed your analysis of the outro of open waters! I wanted to give my perspective: I had the same initial reaction when I heard the “art can’t save the world” line, but the more I thought about it I agreed. Art in any form is not a tangible thing that can’t save you or anyone else. But what it can do is make you look in the mirror and help you save yourself. I think it’s a comment on how people are so quick to say “your music saved my life!” In reality, the music was just the key to unlock the ability to save yourself and shift perspective. Nonetheless, a fascinating concept that made me think quite a bit. Awesome video!
I recently went to his tour stop in Salt Lake City and it was such an incredibly intimate experience. There were like maybe 100 people in what looked like a garage and we were all just vibing while Mavi brought out his friends and talked to us. Him performing this album was the cherry on top, it’s really been my album of the year so far!
To me, the prayer at the end of drunk prayer has two meanings: “Oh my god my lord and savior I know that I’m blessed I am touched Put all of my pain in this cup I swear I’m done feeling” 1. This can be interpreted to mean that the person is praying to god to repent for their sin, and that by drinking from this cup (communion) their sins will be washed away. 2. It could also be a drunk on his last moments of clarity in a last ditch effort to pray for forgiveness. Almost giving up due to the struggle they’ve felt up to that point. The most amazing thing about those two meanings comes when you realize that they aren’t as different as they seem. Alcohol can be what religion uses to pull someone out of the mud, push them deeper, or both.
Only 2 songs in to the reaction but i love you playing with MAVIs amazing lyricism. One of my fav rappers of recent, definitely gotta check out his other albums at some point. Love ya bob. Edit: I usually dont this whole analysis sht but the point you made at 1:53:08 I think really ties back to the first song on the record. Unintentional or not, you really kinda made this album click a lot more for me. Thx Holy sry for the long paragraph mf
bob, if you liked picking up the lyrics for this album you need to listen to ELUCID`s Revelator (you heard him on billy woods' Maps), the way he portrays feelings and scenarios is really abstract. the production is great too (if you listen to the first track you'll get some In Rainbows vibes). if you want to dive into the underground this is a must listen. it dropped like 2 weeks ago.
That intro really sets the tone for the theme of the Album. Whole album imo is Mavi fighting his demons and trying to separate himself from them. 20,000 Leagues is a reference to an old film called “20,000 Leagues under the sea” where the plot of the film is to find and destroy the monster under the sea. Fits the overall theme of the Album of Mavi finding and destroying that monster thats been growing deep inside him. Beautiful Beautiful Album 🖤
I think you should listen to MIKE, I think he constructs some of the most interesting alternative hiphop albums right now. Check Beware of the Monkey or Disco or Burning Desire 🔥
Writing on this album is better to me but MAVIS pen is ridiculously consistent through his whole career. I also think shadowbox is more cohesive and better musically but that’s subjective
@@TheActualGod 100% subjective tbh, but I get it, I just think the message of black lower, and also liek the burtal self honesty on let the sun talk is my reason for loving it so much
NO SHOT I WAS JUST THINKING TO MYSELF TODAY YOU SHOULD DO A MAVI REACTION!! If you enjoy him i highkey recommend his last two albums, especially laughing so hard it hurts, holds a special place in my heart. !! love ya bobber❤
Yo Bob, you would really like Del the Funky Homosapien I think. Super creative, dynamic production, great storyteller, really just the whole package. Inspirational to MF DOOM as well. My personal favorite is Both Sides of the Brain, but I Wish My Brother George Was Here, No Need For Alarm, Deltron 3030, and all his work with Heiroglyphics are phenomenal as well. He's just awesome at putting a full album together in a complete way. Really think you'd dig him!
Hey Bob, I'd love to see a reaction to "Hell Hath No Fury" by Clipse. Clipse were a group made up of Pusha T and Malice. They were produced by Pharrell, which gave them a futuristic sound for the time, which made an interesting contrast with their raw coke rap themes. They're very talented with words - lots of wordplay to deconstruct. Most importantly they have a new album coming out soon, "Let God Sort Em Out," and it would be a big benefit to hear "Hell Hath No Fury" beforehand. Malice left the group for moral reasons in the 2010s and found God, becoming a Christian rapper. He gave interviews speaking against the lifestyle he promoted in Clipse. The fact he is returning to the group makes it an interesting character study. And I think it's very relevant to the push-and-pull you've been exploring between conscious rap and gangster rap. That conflict is represented in Malice, someone who's really lived a life of a crime, became a successful rapper, left, and is coming back.
On a completely different note you NEED to react to The New Sound by Geordie Greep its his first solo album after Black Midi broke up and its absolutely album of the year in my book. its a masterpiece of like king crimsony jazz prog with too many influences to count and genuis lyricism mostly focusing on modern toxic and fragile masculinity and the insecurity that comes with that stuff, a topic that I know you would love analyzing his lyrics about. its nothing like most of what you react too so honestly even if not a reaction i just highly recomend giving it a listen in general
Since you’re a big MF DOOM fan and you have a background in the military, I highly recommend giving Born Like This a listen. One of my favorite MF DOOM projects.
You have GOT to listen to Bread by The Alchemist, it’s a short ep with 4 songs + instrumentals and a good introduction to some Griselda artists (Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine)
His debut album is a classic and no I’m not using the word classic lightly here 😅
Let the Sun Talk legitimately changed the way I think about some parts of my life. I hold that shit so close to my heart it aint funny.
