I was born in Anambas island. The islands are beautiful although a bit hot during summer and very windy during rainy season. It is a peaceful island and the people are friendly and I love the food.
Love that modern jazz influenced, noir sounding music. Very tastefully applied to the lush scenery. A nice feeling of loneliness and remote tropical ambiance.
Very enjoyable video, thank you for sharing. I loved watching how welcoming and friendly the local villagers were, and the large happy families. I wish more people were able to experience other cultures, before being so quick to judge. I have personally been to over 16 but that is only a tiny fraction of what I would like to experience. May you have fair winds and following seas.
Thank you, same to you! I wish, too, that people weren't so quick to judge (or judge at all in fact). Travel broadens the minds of the best of us. 👍✌️ Liz
Hi Florin. Apparently they have changed the rules. You can no longer check in at Anambas for VOA, but check with the relevant websites for the latest information. We haven't been to the Anambas for some years. We recommend looking up Iski when you do arrive though. He's a great guide and can help you out with boaty stuff.
Hi guys. When I was at sea, a long long time ago, we made water via evaporation, but never within 50 miles of a shore line, because not all chemicals/wastes would be removed at a certainty. Is this different for the RO units now used?
[Liz] It's great to have feedback on the drone footage. Jamie has been teaching himself how to use it for a while now, and I think he may have cracked it. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Dear Liz and Jamie. You have a great video! Thanks for made it beautifully. Nice to know you both. Will you come again to Anambas this year? It would be great to meet you in person. Cheers!
Sailing followtheboat Thanks for your replay. Wish you a nice trip. Looking forward to meet you. By the way, I love your hairy friend at first sight. 🐈
What is the condition of the corals you’re encountering in Indonesia? It appears that much of the coral is algae covered and dead? Nearshore water looks eutrophication-nitrogen (waste) pollution in the inlets? Hadn’t expected that the waters were so impacted.
I watch all the videos! A question about accessing all those small uninhabited islands...they must be owned by somebody. How do you know or are they all owned by the country/state and considered open to all? Or if private do the laws allow a shared resource up to the high tide line like America?
Dave Schuetrum [Liz] They are owned by someone, sometimes the government. But the culture over here is quite different to the west. It's not usual for anyone to bar people from landing on a beach, that only happens when a private hotel takes over an island and builds a resort, and even then they won't stop you from anchoring. They're much less exercised about ownership and trespass than we are. Great question, and one which deserves more attention... Peace and fair winds!
[Liz] The southern most island in the group, Bawah, is privately-owned and is being turned into a resort. Yachts may use the privately-laid mooring buoys in the small lagoon, but we were told the charge is prohibitively expensive. I hope Anambas doesn't become like the Maldives.
you two made me to get out and start sailing, I like to do like you guys since 10 years ago. But this time will do asap ,trying to cutting everything. your trip is in my list too , secondly will go southern Burma too. Thanks for the video.
We'd love to sail Burma too, but at the moment it's way too expensive a place for us to take SY Esper. So thrilled we've given you some inspiration. Peace and fair winds! ✌️👌Liz
[Liz] It's an Olympus Tough on the underwater setting. Check out the description beneath the video for a full list of all camera gear we use. Jamie is also a whizz in post-production editing, so that helps too!
Welcome to Indonesia. You may explore these Islands: Labuan Bajo, Rinca Island, Komodo Island, Seraya Island (Flores Indonesia) Derawan Island, Kakaban Island, Maratua Island, Sangalaki Island (East Kalimantan) Nusa Pombo, Kei Kecil, Seram Island (Maluku) Bunaken (North Sulawesi) Wakatobi, Labengki, Sombori (Southeast Sulawesi) Raja Ampat (West Papua) Karimunjawa (Central Java) Thousand Islands (North Jakarta) Mentawai (West Sumatra) Nias (North Sumatra) Sabang (Aceh)
+Hui San [Liz] So far we absolutely LOVE Indonesia! 👌😀👍 Planning to sail to some of the islands you suggest next year. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Peace and fair winds!
Its great you guys are enjoying it, and it sure is beautiful scenery there, but me personally I'd be quite nervous - I guess though that's why I'm only 'watching', and you two great guys are actually 'doing'! lol :)
Good Day, Well, getting a chemical burn would get my circulation going but to be honest I'd rather float about with Liz. That must be the ultimate in serenity. I don't see anyone else around that isn't local so I gather you are off the beaten path as it were. How do you determine your next destination? How are you managing to keep your finances and other stuff secure when using public wifi? VPN?
+Ed Rymes [Liz] It wasn't too bad, just a bit if a shock! And we did all laugh a lot! There were five other cruising boats in the whole island group who we bumped into now and then, but no tourists. Lots of ways we choose destinations - research, weather patterns, word of mouth etc. We use our own mobile phone WiFi with antivirus protection. Peace and fair winds!
You two are awesome as usual. Your vids R so clear. What's your main camera again. And your Drone work is up there with the best. Kind of rare to see much sailing in alot of the channels at the moment. What is your drone again.. Brilliant also. Well done guys. The best also at making the vids with a calming affect.
{Liz] We use a number of cameras, look at the description beneath the video and you will see the complete list. Jamie has posted a video about vlogging cameras, you can see it here: bit.ly/ftbBestCamera Thanks for the comment!
Great "drop, tilt and spin" camera shot there, Jamie! Can you "just barely wait" until (more cheap-ish) drones can be programmed with maneuvers and follow you around (or circle you) autonomously? That DOES sound like a great way to kinda "creep out" the locals, though, which might not be a great thing. Anyway,.. keep havin' fun, don't be sailin' too far north, and, as usual, lookin' forward to havin a whiskey with you guys while bobbing about in the waves in a few short years. Mahalo a me aloha nui, kuʻu ʻīlioʻaukai. Nā makani ʻoluʻolu īa ʻolua! ..plus Millie, of course. :) 🤙
Always a pleasure to read your comments, they bring a smile to our faces 😀 Actually the drone does do follow commands but some of the features are disabled if you're near an airport. Every time I launched the drone in the Anambas I got a warning because the two little airports were within a certain distance, and so those features were turned off. I have to do them manually, which requires great dexterity! Stay well, my friend.
[Liz] It's quite a simple vocabulary, and you can make yourself understood pretty quickly. Constructing whole sentences is a different matter, though. Peace and fair winds for 2018
I'm wondering why the coral is dying in such a remote area? Also do you ever find a place you just dont want to leave! Thanks. Love the videos, it's my once weekly escape.
+Phyllis Stacy [Liz] The coral is almost certainly dying because of global warming, it's happening all over the world. This was one of those places we didn't want to leave! Peace and fair winds!
Great video. I know you are filming , which makes the circumstances different. I however would have trouble keeping my clothes on when on those deserted beaches! ; ) Peace.
[Liz] The sun is so unremitting, and its rays so dangerous when you're close to the equator, that we actually covered up! I wore my full-length rashie whenever we went snorkeling, kayaking and along the beach! Peace and fair winds!
[Liz] If you've watched the episode to the end you'll understand. Far from playing on people's irrational fears (which seems commonplace when it comes to Muslim countries in many of the comments we have received here and on social media) we're trying to illustrate how people around the world share a common decency and a sense of humour. Peace and fair winds.
[Liz] If you watch till the end you'll find that nothing is dangerous about Indonesia, in our experience. We've been taking a bit of flak on YT and social media for sailing in such a "dangerous" area by people (most of whom, I would guess, have never been there) which is why we ask the question in the title. Our videos, we hope, show that it is not dangerous at all, and is a very welcoming country. Peace and fair winds!
Hope you enjoyed the video, rendy. If you can't be there yourself then our wish is that by sharing the adventure we bring you some entertainment. Fair winds to you and your family.
What a lovely experience, thank you for sharing 😍👍🙏
Beautiful place. Thanks for sharing.
It’s beautiful place,many thanks again.
Visit to my town ib BANYUWANGI . We mount with blue fire....

Thank you for visiting my hometown, I hope it will be an interesting experience,
It was a pleasure, Indra. We loved it there and we are coming back later this year 😃
Looking forward for your next visit to Anambas Islands. Loved this video.
Nice to see you being welcomed wherever you go, thats the nice part of sailing in s e asia!
I was born in Anambas island. The islands are beautiful although a bit hot during summer and very windy during rainy season. It is a peaceful island and the people are friendly and I love the food.
You should be proud of your islands. They are some of the just beautiful places on this planet and the people are delightful 😃👍
Bayat Village, Palmatak District.
But now Bayat is the part of new district in Anambas, Siantan Utara District
Good to know, thank you.
Love that modern jazz influenced, noir sounding music. Very tastefully applied to the lush scenery. A nice feeling of loneliness and remote tropical ambiance.
+James Westhart [Liz] So glad you like it. There will be more... 😎
Love to see what y,all see through your eyes. Simply BEAUTIFUL
[Liz] That's exactly what we're trying to do, bring you what we see. Peace and fair winds!

all niice!! have you checked in Anambas or where ....what was your formalities experience , I am on my way from Malayasia
Hi Florin. Apparently they have changed the rules. You can no longer check in at Anambas for VOA, but check with the relevant websites for the latest information. @@followtheboat thank you !!, but what is "Iski" or where should I look for it ?!
@@florinionescu4683 local guy, very nice chap. I can put you in touch if you need any assistance.
Loved the drone shots of the villages, love seeing the life of others.... peaceful people.
[Liz] True indeed, such a charming place and endearing people. Peace and fair winds!
Love how you all keep it real. I am a new subscriber. 💕👍
Hi guys. When I was at sea, a long long time ago, we made water via evaporation, but never within 50 miles of a shore line, because not all chemicals/wastes would be removed at a certainty. Is this different for the RO units now used?
Hi Willem. As far as I know RO removes pretty much everything. Water molecules are smaller than almost all nasties so it shouldn't be an issue.
Great. Are you gong to be on mainland Thailand in the not too distant future? Eastern or western seaboard?
We may nip up there next year but our main plans are more Indo!
Ahh, OK. We live in Thailand some 400 km north of Bangkok and would love to meet up with you guys"" somewhere "close".
Well, we'll keep you posted, Willem. We still haven't explored that part of Thailand...
So beautiful! Once again I love the drone footage. Thanks for sharing! :-)
[Liz] It's great to have feedback on the drone footage. Jamie has been teaching himself how to use it for a while now, and I think he may have cracked it. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Really awesome video! I liked seeing the town and that incredible beach!
[Liz] Great to hear you enjoyed it! The people are lovely, aren't they? 🙂
Dear Liz and Jamie. You have a great video! Thanks for made it beautifully. Nice to know you both. Will you come again to Anambas this year? It would be great to meet you in person. Cheers!
We hope to come to Anambas later this year. Keep watching to see if we are able to get there before the SW monsoon finishes. 👍👌 Liz
Sailing followtheboat Thanks for your replay. Wish you a nice trip. Looking forward to meet you. By the way, I love your hairy friend at first sight. 🐈
Life's just too short, these videos bring it into perspective. Wonderful.
+James Westhart [Liz] I think travel helps us all look at the world with our eyes more open. Peace and fair winds!
OMG I love you people! Much time sailing myself, from commercial fishing starting at 14 on Kodiak Island to the merchant marine roaming the world!!
What is the condition of the corals you’re encountering in Indonesia? It appears that much of the coral is algae covered and dead? Nearshore water looks eutrophication-nitrogen (waste) pollution in the inlets? Hadn’t expected that the waters were so impacted.
Watch the Anambas playlist for some beautiful coral! . This is just one small part of Indonesia, so I can't comment on the rest of the country.
Excellent. Well produced vlog.
+Scott Kamens [Liz] Thank you for the encouragement!

An Island can be owned by a private entity in Indonesia, and yes everyone still can have an access to that beach up to the high tide line.
[Liz] The southern most island in the group, Bawah, is privately-owned and is being turned into a resort. Yachts may use the privately-laid mooring buoys in the small lagoon, but we were told the charge is prohibitively expensive. I hope Anambas doesn't become like the Maldives.

how do you communication with them? :D they excaly using Indonesian speak right? or they using english speak? or you have Translator? Thank you!

It's 21 degrees F outside right now while I watch Liz floating about in warm waters. Good seeing you guys again.
[Liz] It was one of those places where you just had to float about!
How long did your cat take to get accustomed to life on-board?
She came to us as a kitten 10 years ago and has known no other way of life. She loves being at anchor. ☺️Liz
It may work over a few years.
[Liz] Haha!
another ripper video. Great drone footage

How about showing a map that shows wear you are at. Could not find you on google earth. Have fun and no more scary titles ok ?
+Mr C [Liz] Search for Anambas on Google Earth, it won't give you this exact spot, but you'll get an idea. I think the previous episode has a map...
Have the authorities warned you about Jemaah Islamiya?
No warnings, but we keep an eye on the news. Anambas is safe at the moment. Liz
Hot in some languages can mean randy........
WhiteVanMan [Liz] Indeed it can, but not in this case! 🤣
Typical Muslim love of their fellow man !
Indeed. Like many of the Muslim countries we've lived in these people welcomed us with open arms. We loved our time there.

Dreadful to see American black gang culture permeating even these remote islands. Not the most pleasant village.
