    The fact of the matter is we need to be more comfortable with what we say on the internet, & I can respect you for doing just that. You've apologised for what you did wrong, explained your POV & also stuck to your guns with why you made the video in the first place (while also seperating fact from opinion). & as someone who was initially affected by the steamies - which I got over pretty much the day after - I genuinely think what you've said here is justified & I look forward to seeing what you put out moving forward.

      This hate was mostly Twitter, and Twitter is well known for cherry-picking even the most smallest problems they have. Even if they have opinions that are made up for the shake of hate, it is kinda sad that now only some people have braging rights to tell people what to hate and what to hate. For example, if you hate Disney, you'll praise like a genius if you hate dreamworks. You'll be called of moron. Twitter has ruined the concept of opinions forever and not in a good way

    I just wanted to say Thank You for making the Steamy Awards Video, because I was able to go and look at not only the videos mentioned in the video, but other videos from the respective channels. So, as a fan, thank you for introducing me to several creators who'd I'd never of heard of, if it weren't for your video.

    Quite honestly, Watching the Steamy Awards, I honestly saw it as a good and fair show. You gave the well known creators some spotlight, but you gave many lesser known people in the community spotlight. I thought that was wonderful and overall, It felt very fair
    Like I can understand if people wearnt happy with the choice but at the same time, People need to understand that there's lots of people in the community. It would be boring/unfair if Unlucky Tug, Or Victor, or trainboy won every category
    So it was and is a great idea and I, for one, absolutely loved it. Keep up the great work dude :)

    Honestly, looking back, I think the main issue with the steamie awards was you treated more like a review more than an award show. While your critisms were valid and had no ill will, I think that they rubbed people the wrong way and unintentionally killed the feeling of celebration of the comunity's creativity which you were trying to obtain. That being said, I'm glad with how calmly you handled the situation.

    I really admire that you went into full detail about the production and the voting system of the steamie awards.
    You shouldn’t feel bad about the backlash it had, you tried to be as fair as possible with your choices, the use of footage was clearly in fair use considering no official strikes have been made by RUclips or any of the official creators (as far as I know)
    And you obviously understood that maybe some improvements could’ve been made.
    Overall The Steamie Awards video is something to be proud of never forget that.
    Looking forward to future videos.

    I appreciate you owning up. However, I honestly think the real problem with the Steamy Awards was that making an awards show for the Thomas fandom just wasn't a good idea to begin with. We now live in an age where award shows in general are looked down upon and seen as pointless by normal people, relics of a time before the internet.

  • @historyotaku

    When the Steamy Awards came out I was much on the side who disliked it. I still think that some elements and aspects could have been handled poorly and as you say your overall inexperience did show in the final product.
    However, I do respect your tenacity to stick to your guns and while some of it I very much agree with and others I at the very last understand.
    At the end of the day what's happened has happened and there's nothing we can do about so it's best to just from our mistakes and move on. I look forward to seeing what comes from your channel in the future. And to be completely fair, the only category in which I personally disagreed with was Stories of Sodor winning best series.

    The fair use part feels really hypocritical. When was the last time anyone asked the Awdrys, HIT, Mattel, or anyone else when their stories were adapted or had their material, characters, and world(s) used? You shouldn't be able to just bully people with copyright rules like the big boys just because you feel you "deserve" it.

    • @TheTrainTheoristOfficial
      @TheTrainTheoristOfficial Год назад +4

      Also, they were using copyright abuse against him, since under youtubes fair use policy, he can use footage from others, as long as something additional is on it.
      Hell, we could even make a case that if the video was taken down, then according to that, Mattel can take down the many fan projects of thomas the tank engine because nobody asked Mattel if they could use the IP.

  • @thusspokethestruggler
    @thusspokethestruggler Год назад +12

    Honestly, the whole backlash was just ridiculous. Your entire mentality, albeit in need of more thought and potentially postponing the project to craft an overall more solid system, was the correct one.
    1). Fair use is fair use. You credited ALL content creators in each and every segment of the Steamies. To be honest, my own personal bias here, I didn't care about half of the people within it. Truth be told, I have spoken to content creators within the Thomas space and honestly? There is a reason I chose to back out and stop involving myself.
    I'm in NO way saying that I had talks with anyone of particular note nor that I had an influence within it. I was younger (about four years or so ago) when I first got involved in both content creation within the fandom (which is a stretch, I never finished my project despite the desire for it. No this is NOT the channel in which I was producing it). I was getting helpful advice, both with models in Trainz and learning about the creative space. But eventually I knew it wasn't for me. Too much diva like behavior going on and I wasn't proficient enough in Trainz to utilize the technology to it's fullest potential (no I will not elaborate. This is my opinion, not some half-baked cringe hit piece).
    So by hiding behind the fact that peoples favorite creators videos were used is... just so immature and honestly above all misinformed. Your work was absolutely transformative and, if anything else, was good advertisement! I learned about quite a few more niche parts of the creator sphere thanks to the awards. But I will admit your assumption on popularity is utterly spot on.
    2). I agree with the majority of complaints about the voting system. But again, going back to some of my first point, bias is a HUGE thing in any fandom. You were not wrong in the slightest about how much of a landslide victory some of these positions would have been if it was left to fan submission and voting. But more time, consideration, and people working to fact check and improve the polls would have definitely helped.
    When it comes to Blue Snowplow in particular? I would have made a section dedicated to uncompleted works. I don't think grading him, despite how good his series was and how popular it was, should have been in the competition as an incomplete project. If it had been abandoned? Then sure, fair game to consider it in the running but bring up it's uncompleted state. But if he is still producing it and the timeline doesn't work to give him his proper due? Then you shouldn't have included him in that category. It could easily be seen as unfair since it not being completed feels like a negative that didn't deserve to be there. I respect your right to opinions as well as the right to autonomy in these decisions, but that might have been a better alternative (in my opinion).
    3). Props to you for keeping the video up. Nothing I hate more in this world is artists destroying media purely due to a negative view on it. People should be allowed to both disagree and agree with the original video being available for all to judge on their own. You should never feel pressured nor bullied into taking such drastic measures (regardless of whom is hassling you or the opinions of larger channels in the sphere). It's YOUR channel. Take advice and consideration from fans within reason. I support you wholeheartedly in both reflecting and protecting your original work. You worked hard on it and it deserves it's existence.
    Above all, my main recommendation is to avoid Twitter when it comes to fans or "haters" as many call them. The truth is, despite the Thomas fandom having MANY adult creators and viewers, children still exist within the space. I'm not trying to insinuate that all your backlash was from "children" or "emotional immature adults", but rather that it plays a part in it. The internet can be a cruel and vitriolic place. Especially when you challenge the status quo or critic a more influential figure in ANY capacity.
    But this doesn't mean you should throw in the towel. Nor should you resend your views and concede to the ideas of the masses. Keep standing tall, be proud of your unique brand and work, and forge ahead in spite of this. Don't lose sight of yourself and keep improving whenever and however you SHOULD. Not what others may say you should do. Those who respect and admire your work will continue to consume your content and fairly criticize you naturally.
    Awesome response, PDP. I hope you get some well needed rest from the drama and hopefully we, as a collective community, and can slow down with the witch hunting mentality that has harmed so many creators in this fandom over the years.

    Thing I was most surprised with the Steamy Awards was just how many smaller creators were awarded or even at least mentioned, which gave them the spotlight they deserved (Usual Bloke Luke, Scrapyard Studios, etc.).
    I was honestly confused by the backlash, and I just thought (and still think) that it was just the larger content creators of fandom getting their panties in a twist over simple opinions.
    Sue me, I actually liked the video.

  • @ABellEngine
    @ABellEngine Год назад +2

    With a title like "I held an award show for the Thomas community", to me that sounds like the content creators in your video actually participated in it themselves, but that isn't the case for a handful of them going by people such as DemonofNowhere, TheBlueSnowplow, etc. It seems like the people who made their content and are upset by the award show didn't make their content with the intention of either putting down others and "show them how it's done", or competing against each other to be "the chosen one to take over the official brand and save Thomas & Friends from big bad Mattel". They make their content because it's a hobby they enjoy doing. If they were making content for the sole purpose of competing against a brand, chances are they would have an ego and their projects would more than likely suck. Some people just don't like to participate in a competition. It'd be one thing if the award show has competitors who actually want to be in it. Dragging people who aren't interested in it or are unaware of it in isn't the way to go.
