The highlight was when I was allowed to blow the whistle for a grade crossing. I had been waiting all my life to do that--what a thrill! Thank you for watching the video!

I always wondered how that bell works. I thought it would have some steam driven mechanism. But its pushed by a rope. Is there any railroad sign indicating when they have to use it?

The bell on NNRY 81 is manual and operated by the fireman with a rope, as you saw. I believe that many steam locomotives have a bell driven by an air powered cylinder mounted on the side of the bell arm, which is just as you thought. I did not see any signs at NNRY indicating a bell requirement. Although I have not researched this issue, I believe that the bell is required where people are present or likely to be present, such as arriving at a train station or traveling through a yard. Thank you for watching the video!

I did a cab ride in the locomotive that they used in back to the future III in Sonora.
