  • I was asked by the Library of Congress to write the soundtrack for this gorgeous silent film from 1903.
Runaway Match or The Runaway Match, or Marriage by Motor (UK title Elopement à la Mode) is a 1903 short silent film consisting of nine shots. It may be the "first auto-centered narrative film" and the first car chase in the movies.
A couple elope by car. The woman's wealthy father gives chase, but his limousine breaks down. When he arrives too late to prevent the marriage, he becomes reconciled to his new son-in-law.

Excellent film. A complete and easily understood story in 4 and a half minutes

Very interesting film. There were few automobiles in 1903. The tilting front seat to allow passengers access to the rear seat is not something I had thought about previously. And of course, the music was beautiful and perfectly fitting for the film. Thank you.

First time I have seen that as well. Very creative Idea for passage to the back seat. I had a 1959 Imperial whose driver's seat had a lever that would release the seat and tilt it out toward the street.

I remember those Imperials. Every once in a while one shows up at a car show. A beautiful car for sure. One of nicest in the Chrysler line. @@Magnetron33

    lovely music!
This movie was directed by Alfred Collins in 1903, one's of the Brigthon school group, so it´s not a movie of the Biograph company, wich is northamerican. It's a british movie, from the Brigthon filmakers group.

Was this filmed near Brighton, Sussex? I'd love to see the locations now, I bet you can't move for cars. Interesting film, not just for the car chase, the close-up of the hands showing the couple have married was a nice touch.
