In this video I discuss the similarities and differences between these two knives. I also bring in a SOG Super Bowie and a Woodlore clone into the discussion.
GLB...thank you for your time and discussion. I live in Italy and here the retail price is usually between 20 to 30 percent more than the MSRP values. Its dissppointing to see a SOG product that partially fails. Great video once again
I think you should contact sog for that issue. I have the super sog Bowie and I chopped a tree with it that was wider than the length of the blade without a problem. Great video!
I like the SOG Bowie knife. It is a fighting and utility knife that goes back to the Vietnam War. I have one myself, a SOG Trident 2.0 in AUS 8 steel. It`s slightly handle heavy and you can maybe say 70% fighting knife and 30% utility knife. When I bought it many years ago it cost about 150 US dollar, a good knife for the money. My only criticism of this knife is that the blade tip is not very strong. The previous version SOG made of this knife was better. The knife I use most is a Blackjack classic model 7 which is a good clone/copy of the Randal No.1 all-purpose fighting knife. A solid full tang knife is however probably the way to go for a survivor type knife.
Hey GLB, great video on this blade. I also could not bring myself to trust this knife 100%. Instead I run with Knives of Alaska BushCamp knife and am extremely satisfied with it. Check out their other designs as they have some similar to the SOG bowie 2.0
Thanks for the comparison. The SOG is a nice looking knife for sure .Shame about the nut issue, they must have a proprietary tool to fit into the holes. You'd probably need to get rid of the finish and rough up the surface for epoxy to take effectively.
Try jb weld steel epoxy. Clean the finish off the threads and nut as best you can follow with alcohol, mineral spirits whatever and use liberally. Wipe off excess. Let cure for 24. Do you have diamond stones for that 3v? Should solve that problem. Love the bowie style!
Thank you very much for watching and thank you very much for some extra tips on knife repair. However as I stated in the video, I cannot trust this knife anymore nor do I feel it right for me to have to repair a brand new knife. If it's not right from the factory I don't want it. Just my opinion.
Of the two I prefer the looks of the SOG's blade profile. Disappointing though about the SOG retaining nut. A two hole screwdriver or adjustable face spanner wrench would do the trick to really torque down the retaining nut. Then weld it permanently in place. I know it's a lot to do to a new knife but it seems like it's otherwise an awesome knife.
Thank you very much for watching and thank you for your advice. I am worried that the nipples on the face spanner wrench would be too large to fit the said pommel nut. Which would then require me to buy an entire face spanner kit which cost around $50 or more. With the added work to put into a new knife and the expense of a tool for a new knife I feel that it puts the price point too high and other knives are available at that cost. Once again thank you very much.
Watched this video as I am considering buying a SOG Tech Bowie . I have heard several times whilst researching this knife the the butt cao screw can and often does come loose when used as a working bushcraft knife ! First there is no excuse from SOG that this particular problem does occur and to me in this world of high tech innovation no reason SOG cannot remedy this problem ! Can I just say I can see no reason why during the lifetime of your knife anyone would want to unscrew the butt cap anyway as long as you look after the knife in the normal way there should be no need and that means by the way looking after the leather handle by not only cleaning it after use but also feeding the leather now and then with neatsfoot oil or some other appropriate compound . On the other hand if you do find that this particular problem occurs then why not take the butt cap off and fill the tang hole with two part epoxy to the top and screw the bolt back in so that after 24 hours or so the epoxy will have hardened at the same time securing the butt cap and bolt . That should hold it for life .
Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting. Since this video I did use a two-part epoxy in now the pommel is firmly secured. However, there is a very slight rattle in the guard which I know has been another issue that many have brought up.
Oh man that's a huge bummer about the SOG's pommel. It really seems you like everything else about it. I like what you said about the Aus8 steel. Most people will write it off as cheap stuff.
Bark River and Vehement Knives does!!! I actually have a video of it. You are correct though, I wish more people would bring about their interpretations.
I've been wanting a tech bowie for years but never got around to it. Upon research I saw alot of issues with the loose pommel nut so now I'm beginning a search for a similar sized knife.
Excellent video, very informative 👍 and answers my question when it comes to ease of sharpening between us 8 and 3v. I would like to know if you think the sog seal pup elite would perform decently at bush craft tasks? Please let me know if you can. Awesome vid 👍.
Personally I would avoid any knife with serrations, when it comes to Bushcraft. I'm glad that I could answer some of your questions. Thank you very much for watching.
The SEAL PUP without serrations is an awesome knife that can perform really well’ I would love to see SOG put a version of the CISO SOG knife out in the SEAL PUP size’ that knife with a leather handle and aluminum’ steel or brass would be awesome’ I have also had an issue with the pommel nut coming loose’ I took a pair of heavy split ring pliers and tightened it up to my liking’ haven’t had another issue’ it has to be torqued a tad passed hand tight to get the leather to push back on it’ they leave the nut hand tight so the person who receives it can adjust it to there environment’ humidity and non humid are to different beasts with leather.
I used generic 5 minute steel epoxy to to attach an 8oz claw hammer head to a rebar handle (chinasium hammer that originally had a steel tube handle, the rebar fit in the hole left behind when the original handle broke from prying and pulling nails). Months later, you can see a little seperation but it isnt loose or coming off with occasional moderate use. obviously not ideal but its a beater tool I can do abusive things with and I could let someone borrow it without caring if they "loose" it. some reputable 24h stuff might keep that handle on alright for intermittent use even if its not something to depend on your life with, outside of.. social use
If my knife is stick tang i like it to be peened in the end so the pommel usually isnt going anywhere. Im from finland, and i mainly use finnish style knives, and its bit annoying that often they are partial tang that it doesnt go all the way through the handle, and only adhesive holds it together. Often that type of stick tang eventually starts loosening from handle even if i dont do abusive stuff, but its fairly easy also to fix i guess.
I wonder if the pin spacing on the ZT / Kershaw STP Tool (See-Through Pivot tool) is the same as the pommel nut. You could try circlip pliers too. That Super Bowie looks huge.
I would love the if it cost 50 bucks or less. But at more than 200 I’d buy any bark river in a2 over it always. There is no reason at all that it should cost as much as it does. That’s why I just can’t bring myself to buy any sog. Though the piller is on my radar. But it’s more justifiable.
@@glbwoodsbum2567 personally i never been dissapointed with my SOG 2.0 bowie. it even outperformed my others outdoor field knives because its beautiful grind. I sold mine yearsa ago and still bite my fingers on it. I live in Canada. Please could you make a winter video showing your SOG 2.0 in action batonning and doing others task. now you properly secured the rat tail like i done on mine years ago dont worry the cryo Aus-8 will handle every you throw at it. just try it you will be shocked. it would be an awesome "update" video on your beloved SOG 2.0 ! ;) every subscriber will like this video since everyone fear to use this beauty of a knife in the wilderness but its truly a workhorse.
I have an esee 6. If a quarter inch thick knife can't handle light batoning, but my mora knife can, then there's a problem. My properly made macv SOG Bowie from Bark River has no problems doing heavy Bushcraft duties. Since making this video, I have fixed the pommel issue with J-B weld. Knife functions beautifully now .Thanks for watching.
So many people buy fighting knives when they should be buying survival knives. Sog Mac-v, Randall model 1 & the Ka Bar USMC are all fighting knives & not at all designed for bushcraft. Esee, Tops & many other companies make knives better suited to batoning, people should just buy those.
Thanks for watching. I've had the bolts come loose on Esee and Becker knives before. The solution was to just screw them back in. Just as I did with this SOG Bowie 2.0. Furthermore, the knives that you mentioned above, I own and have used in the same capacity and they have never failed. If the screws on a Becker knife aren't screwed tightly enough from the manufacturer, they will come loose, just as the pommel was not tight enough from the manufacturer on this SOG 2.0 Bowie. However, you are correct in saying that there are other knives better suited to batoning.
People should just buy, those?😂Those knives are called- All purpose fighting knives! What do you think all purpose means? Just because, you can't afford those knives and are jealous of those who, can. Don't mean, others should take your advice! Those knives have been used more years in the field than I bet you are old! You know an ax works better for batonning than any knife would, ever! People buy, those knives because they are way more beautiful than any cheap knives you think they should only use!😂
I agree that the knife was not designed for that. However, I have other knives of the same construction that are just fine in the act of batoning. I did fix the issue with some JB Weld. Thank you very much for watching.
I got my dad's old Ka-Bar he carried it when he was in the service for 8 years countless camping and hunting trips from him and I. It's never failed but we're not knife snobs I go with what's been proven.

I’ve been trying to decide on which knife to buy and I think I’ll probably do the same and buy both.
God I hope you didn't. I own both and many other knives. The Sog is probably the only knife I've actually been disappointed in.

I had booth these. Must say I like the BRK better. It feels more robust, but that hollow grind and faceted tip of the Sog is so daamn nice!
I doubt you have a GENUINE SOG S1 Bowie made in Seki Japan (SK-5 Carbon steel)
@@danbigboss6484 this video dosent show the Seki made. It compares W 2.0 fr Taiwan and BRK MACV-SOG
Well shit fire. I had my sog 20 put up for a real shtf situation. Looks like I'm going to have to choose different knife 😊
Because one video reviewer doesn’t use the right lock tight? lol sounds like you need some real world experience old man

For the type of outdoor use you’re putting the knife through, get a full profile tang knife.
I'll have to get one of those. Thanks for watching

Use industrial loc tite. You have to heat it to get it loose.
Man I just paid a shit load for a new 1 just like that 1. Hopefully this does not happen , there is a lifetime warranty
There may be a lifetime warranty. You may have to look into it to see if that warranty includes batoning and or chopping.
Very good review I subscribe👍
