    Why weren't you sawing the wheel back and forth to try to get unstuck? Did you stop there or did the snow bring you to a halt? Sure the tires are bad but i'm betting the driver had something to do with it too.

    These guys are old but gold They are really passionate about driving. Despite of you age ANDRE,ROMAN and NATHAN keep going and going and going ,because there may be the end of trail but there's no end of journey. I see you guys going by seeing those subs😁Im really happy. Its winter now hoping to see lots of snowy adventures. Great Job guys

    Roman, a good tip when you're stuck in snow with no traction is to remove your floor mats and olace them under the spinning tire..that will give you grip and momentum enough to pull you out of the situation

      Might not want to rip up the floor mats, i don't think the manufacturer would appreciate that

      Geovanni Delgado in a dire situation yes rip them up, but they were far from it and better to keep the people who lend you the cars happy

    • @seraphimvalkyrin4543
      @seraphimvalkyrin4543 8 лет назад +3

      +Geovanni Delgado That doesn't always work though. From experience, normally what happens is either the mat gets covered in snow and ice and doesn't provide any traction at all or the tire just flings it out from under the car.

    Great job showing how tires and even the type of snow make all the difference in the world. That video of the older 4 runner with winter tires just walking right up with no issues and now this shows how much a difference the right tires make.

    Roman, a little throttle control goes a long way. Just flooring a diesel with all that torque sure as hell won't help with traction. Aaah we still love you Muricans 😂😂😂😂

    • @jobanarusnya_mustdie
      @jobanarusnya_mustdie 8 лет назад +11

      +Joshua Webb this could be true because those (summer) tires has to be shining in a show room of the car dealer, so they are definetelly sprayed by smth.

    • @StephenMc2000

      Ziad El-Koussa i just wonder what brand and model of those tires? Tell us the name and we'll try to google them if they are winter or not at all. I don't think they are good on snow.

    • @rfh1987
      @rfh1987 8 лет назад +1

      +Joshua Webb +BAU +StephenMc2000 All of the above. haha. I think they possibly are slicked a bit by the dealership, but the road probably would have worn that off, on the way to the trail. I have done some snow off-roading, and my tires looked like that just from melted snow. It basically cleans them to a shine.That all said, I know TFL does their reviews with the stock tires. Anyone who actually wanted to do this would have tires with chains and/or studs.

    This guy is a bloody goat, if youre in deep snow, you are supposed to go into the sand mode. Read the user manual atleast if you dont know about off roading. know the difference, the mode youre in initially is you driving off in a higher gear to avoid wheel slip.. Have you ever tried to launch a car when stuck in mud??? sigh..

    What an amazing amount of effort to show that you don't know what you're doing. You can get the tyres (tires in your lingo) to fit those wheels, but surely you knew that. Going into deep snow on those tyres was always going to end in tears no matter what car they were fitted to. I suspect you were doing it to make a point to other people who don't know how. If you'd let the tyres down they would have changed the contact patch enough to get it moving. What you did was make the problem worse by spinning the wheels aimlessly until you were dug right in. Not the behaviour of an experienced off roader. Land Rovers are without question the king of the hill when it comes to the rough stuff, you just got one of the best off roaders in the world stuck, well done mate!

    Range Rover makes a very capable AWD/4x4 vehicle but that's what happens when you take a vehicle with junk Good-Year tires off road in snow and ice.
    With a good set of tires you wouldn't have had that problem....Another lesson to be learned here is don't go off roading alone, especially in adverse conditions! You should always have another vehicle with you in case of issue. What happened to you is a perfect example of why it should not be done alone.

    Summer tires are garbage in snow, can't stop or get much traction, but spinning them hard isn't the way to get out.
    Once your stuck, you slowly go back and forward, you don't overspin like in the mood, because the snow melts and become ice, besides you go deeper and have to shovel.
    Great show, but not great winter driving skills.

    Had a big snowstorm where i live not long ago. I took a Discovery 2 on SUMMER TIRES to the steepest hill i could find for some fun. Found a Range Rover Sport (previous gen) with tires just like those in the video, no doubt summer tires too. It was a narrow road and he was sliding side to side trying to climb it. Sat at a good distance behind him and as soon as he stopped, i i took my opportunity and sailed right past him up the hill. Low range 2nd gear, wasnt using momentum, just traction. The Disco did struggle a little but it soon clambered up. Looked in my mirror and he was trying to turn around but got wedged sideways blocking the road. fun times, shame i didnt take a rope. That Range rover Sport was literally worth 20 times the value of the Disco, and i'm sure they're very capable, but slick tires ruin everything apart from looks!

    Those aren't even M+S tires. If you look on tirerack, the Eagle F1s are "max performance summer". The tread compound is too hard when cold, the tread design is anything but snow friendly.

    • @TFLtruck

    Typically you only want a skinny tire when driving in the snow on the street. Offroad you want a wide tire so you float on top and don't sink.
    Any reason you didn't rock the steering back and forth?

    Roman, I really enjoyed this video. I am also thinking the day was getting warmer meaning the snow was at the worst condition it could be for traction. We have been in a situation where we had to wait for cooler temps for the snow to (powder up) which can make conditions easier to drive in. Maybe a small recovery kit to take from vehicle to vehicle when you go to play, I mean test. Thanks TFL. Wayne

    I hate to tell you this, but one of these days you are going to die in the hills. You have been up there numerous times and you know the snow can be deep. :-( Please, at least bring some long cable ties with you. Wrap them around the tires and they can work as temporary tire chains. Glad that you got out in one piece.

    Roman I'm not sure who or what stated there is no way a synthetic cable or rope will not fail but that is an incorrect. Failure can occur from the manufacturing process to operator errors. Remember the Titanic was unsinkable according the ship builder. Also a good practice for any winching is to place a coat over the line to prevent it from snapping back.

    Hey TFL, is it at all possible for you to purchase a standard tire + wheel set (commonly available but good for light offroading) that you can put on all the vehicles you take offroad, so that there is a proper comparison between the vehicles?

  • @ads9611
    @ads9611 6 лет назад

    Granted the M & S tyres on 20" wheels is far from an ideal off-roading set up. However, if the RR Sport was equipped with the Off-Road Package (Two-speed transfer box & also a locking rear differential, if I'm not mistaken), might it have fared a little better?

  • @jobanarusnya_mustdie
    @jobanarusnya_mustdie 8 лет назад

    Quite funny video because Roman looks like a newbie which owns his very first car and snow is a big surprise for him. I guess nobody else would go into the mountains on those tires designed strictly for roads. Now I know why even lite snow called a snow storm for drivers - they just don't have snow tires so even range rover with 4x4 becomes a helpless car...

  • @Dabbill
    @Dabbill 8 лет назад

    You do not want narrow tires for snow or mud. You want wide tires with good size sidewalls so that you can lower the air pressure and ride on top of the snow. Narrow tires dig down to much so your constantly trying to push snow out of the way of the tires, or climb up the snow in front of the tires.

  • @bmwmsport11
    @bmwmsport11 8 лет назад +11

    What sucks about all land rovers is that they make their brakes/rims so big you can't actually get an off road tire to fit on a stock suspension set up. You can barely find any low profile all terrain tires. Just proves Land Rovers are just for show.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando
      @MrKeyboardCommando 8 лет назад +2

      +bmwmsport11 RangeRovers are a fashion accessory, which is a great shame because, correctly shod, they have unsurpassed off-road ability. The tyres on this RangeRover are low profile performance tyres, and are totally unsuitable for any off-road use.

    • @The_Osprey
      @The_Osprey 8 лет назад

      +bmwmsport11 You can find smaller diameter wheels that will match up to the factory bolt pattern.

    • @bmwmsport11
      @bmwmsport11 8 лет назад +1

      +Invincible Osprey for any other brand, yes. But for these new land rovers, there is little room for downsizing rims. Brakes are too big. I was reading on LR4s and it turns out the smallest rim that work are 19s(stock size). 18s from the LR3 aren't big enough to clear the calipers, even though it's the same exact bolt pattern/offset.

      i most say dont know where you buy your tires from but i have many friends that drive range rover for the purpose of off roading and they never had this problem at all its tries not the car so stop blaming Land Rover for Goodyear's problem you can off road tries for a range rover that will just anywhere that sales tries and it would only make since the tires on this range rover would not be fit for snow given the fact that it's a Range Rover Sport emphasis on sport it's based on on the road driving not off road driving get yourself a regular Range Rover and you'll be fine

  • @ghetdo007
    @ghetdo007 8 лет назад

    This is really the fault of most manufacturers: they advertise a certain capability for their SUVs, but stick them in glorified summer tires. In all honesty, the majority of the car-owning public can be very clueless. I've seen Jeeps slip in a few inches of wet snow because the tires were essentially bald and poorly maintained. Roman, please keep up the great videos and try to keep the manufacturers honest about their vehicles. No one would ever take a stock $85k SUV off-road, so it's great that you guys do it, or at least try.
    When I buy the Pilot, it's great knowing that with some skill and patience, it can go up Gold Mine hill in stock form. Obviously, the most it will ever see is a few inches of know, a dirt road, or on the beach, but it's nice to know someone has successfully driven it off-road.

  • @denisleblanc4506
    @denisleblanc4506 8 лет назад +1

    It's funny how all the terrain management selection and other computer assistance didn't have a difference. My understanding is if you select snow/ice you start in a higher gear and throttle mapping is changed to prevent wheelspin. But then it was obviously overwhelmed by lead foot racer Roman. Spinning like that was the worst thing you could have done because you overheated the tires turning the snow to ice under the tire and melting any snow in contact with the tire so it gripped even less. It sure makes the Land Cruiser look good and almost a bargain even thought the drive was still M. Leadfoot. I suspect with a diesel it probably would have almost idled down that hill if you didn't try to dig yourself to China. Another problem with modern SUV's are the huge diameter wheels with very short sidewall tires that won't allow you to air down to have a bigger contact patch improving grip. The extra weight of a diesel would have helped not hindered you. The Raptor has even more weight on wider tires (but they were better tires though not the best winter tire.) Not to brag about Toyotas because even the Raptor made it, but it would have been nice to see what CRAWL control would have done in similar conditions. I don't think your idea about funding winter tires to test is a good one. It's been done to death. I do feel however that it may be a good idea to pay for Roman to take a winter driving course, he desperately needs one. Maybe Andre could give you tips?

  • @seraphimvalkyrin4543
    @seraphimvalkyrin4543 8 лет назад +3

    You want skinny tired for snow? Yeah, that's why snowmachines, bicycle snow tires and arctic vehicles all have narrow tracks/tires on them.....Hence why you let air out of your tires to give you a bigger footprint in the snow because wider is better.

    • @Lexolo999
      @Lexolo999 8 лет назад

      +Seraphim Valkyrin Not necessarily. Snow tires are usually skinnier than performance tires. Look at rally cars and their studded snow tires. The idea is to have greater pressure on the contact surface, push through/away the snow, and have the studs grip the surface below the snow.

    • @Phos9
      @Phos9 8 лет назад +1

      Not exactly, a wide tire needs something to help it make traction with the snow. They weren't sinking, like in fresh powder, they were spinning all four on the surface. A narrower tire concentrates the force due to gravity (weight), allowing the tire to dig in harder and make more traction.

    • @seanjanssen7071

    All 4x4's need good tires to be effective in mud and snow and most good 4x4's come stock with crap tires! If you can afford an $80,000 Land Rover you should be able to afford a set of dedicated winter or all terrain tires and rims. I replaced my stock crap tires within 3,500 miles of buying my FJ new.
    In no way am I bashing TFLtruck, I realize they can't modify free test vehicles with new tires but they could put KO2's on the old Raptor lol.

    You 're right the tires are at fault. Either the tread is a manufacture mistake, the tires are a Goodyear knock off from Chins, or Goodyear gave Land Rover a really "good" deal on the tires. On my full sized vans and trucks I run Goodyear Wranglers or Michelin AT and AT 2 never had problems like that. Maybe too much "Armor All" was sprayed on the tread face?

    Were the tires aired down at all they seem to be at full pressure airing them down would've helped greatly

    Lived in Anchorage AK for twenty years and from the looks of this video that poor SUV riding on those tires wouldn't be able to get out of the neighborhood on a wet and heavy snowfall.

    Roman, I am constantly shocked at videos like this. Every single one shows a Range Rover with stock all season tires. I owned many Audis all quarto, when I drive in the snow I throw Nokian tires on. The Audi S6 would plow snow in Upstate NY winter storms where the roads have deep snow and the police are stuck in the roads. You sir are doing a huge disservice by not putting Nokian tires on that Range Rover. I promise you, that car will not get stuck in that snow with Nokian tires on it. It's traction control is superior to Audi. Show some intelligence people and put snow tires on cars your taking into the snow. Watching this is painful like all the other RUclips videos showing a range Rover in less than moderate snow. FYI roman skinny tires will only get you buried in deep snow and bottom your vehicle out. I lived in Western NY to be specific for over 50 years. Never ever once did an Audi or SUV get stuck in feet of snow with Nokian tires on them. Oh however I have pulled many many 4x4 150 and 250 trucks out of deep snow who were idiots running the roads on all season's. My H2 with all season's useless in the snow. However with proper Snow tires, it was unstoppable. Grow up folks and show a proper video with Snow tires on the vehicle, not Walmart brand tires either, Nokian or Michelin snow tires, ever Coopers works. Cheers and best of luck
