There are a total of four blood groups. They are based on the A and B antigens, protein compounds found on red blood cells. People with blood type B have only the B antigen, people with A only A, people with AB have both, and those with type O have neither. Differing blood groups can cause dangerous immune reactions in transfusions. The Rhesus factor is also important.
