All boosters did. How the fuck else do you get a heavily recruited player to South Bend? Have you ever been to Indiana? The best part about being in Indiana is leaving.
my jaw dropped and I laughed so hard watching them on game day. when mcafee said the secret podcast and shane laughed. we all know the public aint ready lmao.
Saban isn’t used to not being treated like god, it’s fun to watch Shane get to him. It rankles him. I know it wasn’t just the SEC, all Texas could get you a nice car a new roof for your grandma. ND’s advantage was every Catholic kid who could play HAD to go to ND.
The way the stuff worked wasn't so cut and dry. Nearly every major school paid players but only very select ones, and it was through things like hiring their parents for ghost jobs as a contractor and paying them 250k a year. Kids were suspended for accepting meals and gift cards in exchange for autographs back then. They would absolutely catch you taking even $1000
Shane was hilarious for going at saban like that and I absolutely loved it. But come on, if you really think the SEC was the only conference paying players before NIL, then I really don’t know what world you’re living in
Alabama Jones was an all-timer line. Also, Cam Newton dressing like a cartoon cat made me laugh so hard... I gotta start listening to this podcast more 😂
On the magic Johnson topic, a buddy of mine thats a doctor told me this "joke", he said you want to know what we in the medical field call a straight man with aides?? a liar.😂😂
Weird because Adam Carriker was talking about a text thread guys were having in the NFL about what they got paid in college and most of them were from the SEC. Are you making that statement about power teams from evidence or experience or are you just saying that?
@ Reggie Bush quite literally had his Heisman Trophy vacated for being paid/given gifts and he played at USC. If you think he’s the only non SEC player to be paid before NIL existed idk what to tell you 😅
Sec did pay players but the best thing they honestly did was get players to play at high level. Eg Alabama players are good because they go against nfl players in practice as freshmen. By the time they get drafted they have game reps against good competition
I remember Eddie Lacy after the game said, “I love playing for this ORGANIZATION.” It was a professional team then…tough to compete against with a bunch of actual college students.
Truth is, before schools could pay players they had to look for other reasons to select certain programs. ND was unappealing for most of the modern pre-NIL era. They weren’t in a conference, no national exposure, always overrated, no big games, etc. As a player, you want the biggest stage possible to maximize odds of getting into the NFL. This “now the SEC isn’t the only conference that can pay players” shit is such cope.
@ I dunno, Clausen was already a bust by the time Newton was drafted. It would be very hard to imagine Cam being any worse than him coming into the league.
@@MisunderstoodSpaceMarine my bad, I wasn't making a reference to the comparison between the 2 but more of the fact that alot of people doubted cams nfl success. I was a cam fan and had the argument at work alot.
@ No apologies needed! I just never remembered the idea of him being a bust coming out of college, but I probably wasn’t paying much attention to narratives. Shane definitely believes that being a ND homer lol. The dude has to be losing his mind after the game last night.
I’ve met 2 college coaches working in their house. Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney. Dabo offered me a steak and his wife tipped me $100. And Nick completely ignored me and pretended like I wasn’t even there while his wife did all the talking. Then i got locked out of the house while he was sitting on the couch watching tv and I knocked on the door for 5 minutes. He never came and opened the door so I had to walk all the way around the house to get back in.
You’re the GOAT and some goofball fifty years younger than you who you’ve never heard of calls you a cheater on a nationally broadcast television show, what reaction do people expect him to have? Shane is hilarious and the Alabama Jones thing was funny, and I get that people were tired of hearing about the SEC and watching them crush their teams repeatedly, but there is some strong delusion out there about other conferences and teams not paying players.
Weird how the thought process is only the SEC was paying players. There are much bigger schools with wealthier boosters than Alabama. Not to mention all the schools that have been caught in the past.
My thing is, for sure schools payed players under the table. I think behind closed doors, literally no one is denying that. Whether that be financially, or through “gifts”. But to claim ONLY SEC school were paying players is absurd. If that was the case, no other school would’ve been relevant. Any player of some caliber would only consider an SEC school. They wouldn’t go to USC, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, ND, Clemson, etc. They’d go to the school offering them hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, lol. What’s different now is that there’s no cap. So rather than comparable under the table payments, the schools that have the most money can literally throw whatever they want at players. Such as Miami, Texas, Michigan, etc. For example, Duke. A very wealthy school. Just dropped nearly 10 million on a QB from Tulane. They have more money than schools such as Mississippi State or Arkansas, etc.
14:04 It’s a real thing, being really snappy and rage out sometimes it happens just randomly. I never could figure out how/why it would happen but sure enough like 1 out of 20 times using I crash out for the tiniest thing.
Shane messed up in that he wasn’t aware that Saban has absolutely no sense of humor. The SEC didn’t pay their players any more than all of the other top football programs/schools from different conferences.. Schools/teams like USC,Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Ohio State Notre Dame, Nebraska, Miami, FSU, Texas Tech, Michigan, UCLA. SEC schools aren’t gifting players chargers or transferring money into their bank account. It’s always been the rich alumni/boosters who owns a Dodge dealership and leases a car to the star player for next to nothing, or they just secretly pay the bill themselves. More times than not in order to get a player in the past the money and incentives were primarily aimed towards that athletes parent/parents. Being that the kid would go where mom or dad told him to. If a star recruit/player is coming from a poor single parent family type of background; they’ll secretly take care of his mothers bills or put his mother and siblings into an apartment or house that they’ll pay for. They’ll usually help the mother get a much better paying job so she can afford those payments herself. They’ll get her the residence/job not too far from the university so she can come see her son play. They’re not doing it out of the goodness of their heart. They did and probably still do it for their own self gratification. Their usually taking advantage of that players situation, because that kid can help the school they went to win games and give them bragging rights. When it comes to the players it’s a lot of here you go man it’s on me or don’t worry about it I got you. I’m sure Shane gets a lot of perks and gifts because of his celebrity status and popularity. If you’re a starting SEC football player you’re a huge celebrity on campus. If you’re the star starting qb/heisman hopeful you’re bigger than Tom Cruise. Even celebrities themselves are trying to hang out and be friends with these star college football players! The truth is that before NIL most of these players came to the SEC due to: a) it’s the best and the best players want to play with and against the best b) the SEC had the most exposure and prime time television slots with ESPN/CBS c) SEC football is insanely huge with a culture, environment and experience that other schools/conferences can’t match d) SEC schools have the biggest and best fields, stadiums and practice/training facilities e) the SEC has the best coaches and the best players want to play for the best coaches. I could list many more reasons, but I think I made my point. These other schools and conferences didn’t have or want to put that kind of money into their football programs, so their fan base just chalked it up to the SEC just pays all their players. I don’t blame them either. These are Universities and Colleges that should be about higher learning! Priorities have become incredibly skewed/ass backwards! People are getting it wrong. They assume that since NIL is allowing these schools to pay and get talented players away from the SEC that they previously wouldn’t have been able to; it must be because they were right and the SEC has always been paying all their players. It’s not an accurate take on the situation and it just isn’t true. The reality is actually the opposite and it’s because they’re able to do what they always accused these successful SEC programs of doing. They’re willing to give up on all those SEC perks in exchange for the kind of money they’re receiving. Why would you want to compete for a starting job at a top program like Alabama when you could get potential millions to go play for a Duke or Texas Tech.
I think it’s super wack that Saban can just take a joke especially when you’re a guys on his show who is a comedian making a joke. And then Saban doubled down on not liking him a week later on PMS. Saban is a bad show host for that.
SEC shady car dealers etc paid players, and they over signed classes, were able to stack 4/5 star talent. Now with Portal and NIL those advantages are gone. The real reason their hasnt been an SEC team in the champ game the last 2 seasons
Isn’t it interesting that as soon as ALL teams were allowed to pay players through NIL… the SECs dominance ended? 2 years in a row, no SEC teams in the title game.
It wasn’t much of a joke, because Nick Saban can’t participate. If he plays along - people will get mad. If he stays serious - people will say that’s evidence.
