  • Coco Gauff just lost in the Italian Open 2024 yesterday to Iga Swiatek. Prior to this matchup, she had a lot of double faults in the early rounds. What do you think of her serve? Let's discuss this in the comments down below?

    Thanks A C. I will seek out those comments from Andy. By the way, here is the link to my review of her serve following Indian Wells this year: ruclips.net/video/l2J-3jd70wc/видео.html&lc=Ugw8Jf3FygmQ0ciCxRd4AaABAg. Best, John

    If you want to implement something new with your serve, you have to not worry about losing. When Pete Sampras changed from one handed backhand to a two handed backhand he lost many matches.

    What were those adjjustments made with Andy? Andy Roddick briefly talked about this in his podcast over the course of a few videos - you can find them on RUclips. I think it had something to do with her ball toss and not dropping her toss shoulder too early?? He said they worked together for 2 days and she seemed to get it.

    I always wonder, on the level of stroke biomechanics, are the coaches teaching the players or the other way around?

    Perhaps because your opponents'confidence goes up when they know yours is low, because you're telling the world you're having technical issues. They might decide to just move in when returning, and pressure you to go for too much.

    John- Aside from tactical changes- what is the basic technique problem with Coco's serve? You title video lets talk about. It. But you dont. Maybe you do in another video but not here. Are you saying she should hit more slice serves on first and second serves? What are the changes she should make? I think Brad Gilbert would be open to ideas.😊🎾

      Hi Frank, Thanks for your comment and contribution to the video. Here is the link to my review of Coco's serve at Indian Wells in March of this year: ruclips.net/video/l2J-3jd70wc/видео.html I plan to take a closer look at her serve this weekend and assess if there have been any changes since. Hello John. Good video. I also was confused with her interview, why does she feel she needs to go for 120. Place it well, put some spin, improve your chances of being agressive in the next shot that's the whole goal. Federer was acing guys with 110 mph serves, that should tell you all.
    I can't know what she is working at. I think she has a lot of small things to improve. Including that supination pronation sequence. But technical changes aren't talked much about. Zverev did some changes to his weight shift on serve this season, see the results, but who talks about it.

      Forgot, yesterday with Swiatek, the serve cost her the first set. Double fault to lose the break. 2 double faults from deuce to get broken at 4 4.

      Fed can serve 130 often. You’ll need that so you can mix it up with 110 to ace your opponents.

    • @DATennis
      @DATennis Месяц назад

      @@bournejason66 Fed rarely served 130. Max a 128. You can fine 140 on his first years on tour. Or one every 50 matches. But mostly around 115 as in his average 1st serve speed in Australia 2017. You can check the stats of his matches. The effectiveness of his slower serve were the spin, disguise and where he put it, not because he went big on other serves.

      @bournejason66 Месяц назад

      @@DATennis not really. If that’s the case he could have only serve 110 throughout the match or even his career. But his average serve was well above 110 mph. That should tell you something. Not saying placement is not important but the added speed varieties is key to his success.

      Thanks for the comments and contribution to the video. My other video on Coco's serve presents the big issue she has...falling to the left. Here is the video: ruclips.net/video/l2J-3jd70wc/видео.html

    Brad Gilbert is interesting and a great coach no doubt and should be in the hall of fame as a coach/contributor to tennis. Ok, now l can get to my point.
    Gilbert had Andy Roddick and did a great job, they should have never parted. That being said Roddick did not need any coaching when it came to his serve. When Gilbert had Agassi was fantastic there getting Andre to think differently about how to construct points, conditioning and his overall process. But there again Agassi was pretty well set when it came to his serve so Brad didn't weigh in too much there.
    So my question is and feel free to give feedback, how good is Brad Gilbert as a coach when it comes to the serve? That is a legitimate discussion to have. Coco should not be double faulting as much as she has.

      Hi Greg, Thanks for your comments, questions and contribution to the video. I have not heard Brad speak about or teach the serve, so I have no idea. But what I can tell you is how surprising it is that very few top players (that I worked watched, worked with) really understand the serve, and certainly don't have any idea how to develop it. Best, John

      @@gregoryphillips3969 Hi Greg, Sabalenka's team was wise to seek outside help for her serve. More players / teams should do the same. I have watched a lot of tour coaches on the practice courts at Indian Wells, and wonder what the hell the are doing! Here is a short (1:47) video from Jeff Salzenstein that pretty much sums it up: performanceplustennis.com/performance-plus-serve-stroke-video-analysis-description/ Scroll down to "Testimonials".
