Everybody gets screwed. I work for an Audit firm and it pains me every time when I see how much the company makes out of projects I work on but it’s a pity we agreed on a salary when I started

Artists have been swindled since time immemorial if they didn't have their wits about them or didn't read their contracts with understanding. The ones who do, have always done better. There is information asymmetry in the music business and it mostly benefits record label owners. This is what artists are calling attention to.

Love Maggz long time man ,it’s actually dope that Mac G ,Ghostie and Sol understand Hip Hop or good music nje in general makes shows with musicians slap even harder
Business is business man if you agreed to 5% that's what you get. You can't be demanding more now just cause things are popping n deals are happening. Maybe after the term of your contract you can negotiate for more. That's why people need to up their business acumen. The industry is cutthroat. Nigga life is cutthroat basically
@@tinker2054 I think real life is a bit more nuanced than that, saying something is cutthroat is hardly a justification for its perpetuation. People once took a similar stance on injustices such as slavery or even apartheid, granted these are extreme analogies, but the point is that stakeholders always have the right to question systemic injustices. A systemic injustice in the music industry (or even in the wider entertainment) is information asymmetry, which means record labels, by virtue of their resources and economies of scale, have more information about the nature of deals they sign people on. Artists need an arbiter they can trust to facilitate their deals, unfortunately most new artists do not have an understanding of this or are too "hungry" to question whatever deals they are offered. There is a definitely a predatory aspect in the entertainment industry that extends beyond just capitalism ideals.
@@coolexio Fair enough valid points all around but I still feel like artists should raise their knowledge n awareness about the contractual and legal side of the industry. There is a wide array of knowledge that one can tap into on the internet. That alone may not be enough to compete with the resources that record labels have but it's a starting point. Basic things like understanding publishing, how royalties work etc is a stepping stone to guarding and/or increasing ones earning potential. People have seen what these deals do to people. Hunger can't always be an excuse not to read up on things and learn more about your industry. I know competing with these money hungry giants isn't easy. Most struggling artists can barely afford a good lawyer to help them through the process. It's a tough situation man but I do feel like a bit of knowledge can go a long way. What's sad is that the business world is solely rooted in profit and higher ups in various industries are greedy and want to maximize profit the best way they can even if it means exploiting their fellow man. At the end of the day this isn't church it's business, we can share our stances on how things should be but that just not realistic. Humans can be amazing creatures but they also be cold, greedy and evil. Not saying it's right but that's life that's capitalism for you, shit won't always be fair.
