    I own a Plug-In Prius and I had the same bad impression on the range of electric only, but for me it works pretty well. It really depends on what type of commute that you normally do. I for instance work less than 5miles from work, so I have been going to work electric only which is great, no gas on my daily mandatory commute. I've got 700 miles on one tank recently, and bare in mind that it's only a 8 gallon gas tank. So there's your answer. I love my Plug-In Prius.

      @@zart3374 10.6 from google search. That is smaller than normal prius, which I believe is 11.9, but not 8 gallon small, which would be a bit too small for a car.

    The Toyota Prius Plug-in has won many awards. It's among the most fuel efficient cars in the market.

    That is exactly my driving need: Daily short trips in a major city; occasional cross country trips.
    Also, after living in California in the late 80's early 90's, and in Asia today, keeping the air clean is important to me.
    Not to mention, saving gas is saving money.
    Been looking for the right car, I plan on buying a Prius plugin when I move back to the States next year.

    This is the most limited of all "plug-in" vehicles on the market. Which wouldn't be a bad thing if the price was a reflection of that. But when you can buy a Chevy Volt for the same money, I just don't get it.

  • @rickwilson433

    Why does everyone think that anyone how buys a Prius is trying to save the environment? I just filled up my Prius with 43 miles left to go on the tank and it only cost me $24.11 @$3.14 a gal. It’s not always about saving the environment, it also about saving money! Which is why I bought mine. Check it out $68 to fill your tank times 52 weeks a year times 10 years is $35,360 and that’s more then I spend on my Prius.

    My Volt goes about 46 miles on electricity alone. Yesterday it went 51 miles using the low on the transmission that provides instant regenerative braking. The Volt does electric all the way to 100 mph, unlike the Prius. You can gun it 0-100 at every light, blowing away prius as you go, and the engine will never come on. Best of all my 2014 Volt cost 23,000 after federal tax credit and Ca rebate. Most Volt owners average 900 mpg if they commute less than 40 miles.

    The volt can get 50+ miles on a single charge in LA traffic easily. Put your volt in "L" on the transmission which will activate your re-generative brake when you lift up on accelerator. This will charge your battery and save your brakes from wear. Stop and go traffic combined with highway speeds less than 50 are ideal to get 50 miles per charge. My max was 51.4 miles on a charge. I don't hyper mile or drive like an old man. I just drive with the flow of traffic. If I reach home and I still have a charge I like to look for other cars that I could blow away at lights before I put it away for the night. This thing is a monster 0-40 mph. I have for it to 100 mph a few times. I love the volt because it had unlimited range...unlike the tesla, bolt, leaf, etc. it's badass!

  • @davidwilson2233
    @davidwilson2233 9 лет назад +1

    My Volt has 21,600 miles on it in one year. I drove 40.4 miles on a single charge. My max has been over 51 miles on a charge. I don't hyper mile, coast, draft or any of that crap! I drive in L which engages the re generative brake immediately when you lift your foot off the accelerator. In California with traffic, this is ideal for the Volt. By using L on the transmission you tend to never use your brakes (no dust on rims and no brake jobs) and you extend your battery range. The Volt is most efficient on battery below 50 mph, like most cars. The Volt can easily do 100 mph on battery. The faster you drive less range you will have. If there are no cars on the freeway and I am doing 80 mph, yah I will get about 38 miles a charge. If you are in bumper to bumper traffic and don't exceed 55 mph you will probably get 50 miles per chRge in L. The Volt is so amazing and kills the Prius in mpg for the typical driver. If you drive less than 40 miles per day you could get 900 mpg. Do you drive less than 40 miles? I love the Volt.

      agreed, but the sell had more to do with meeting the bare minimum range to get the tax credits in California rather than the actual practicality of the vehicle itself.

    • @peshawar555
      @peshawar555 3 месяца назад

      Yes. You can charge 4.4kw battery while going downhill and also it charges pretty fast depending on the slope. Also people only consider the 11 miles EV range as a benefit but if you charge the car before a long trip, the battery backup assists you for a longer run as it assists the engine and keeps charging at the same time. Because the car doesn't go to EV mode at higher speed and gets more chances to charge on regenerative braking, it saves fuel on long trips. It keeps pushing the car with the engine if it's not in EV mode.

    Prius $32,000, at $4/gal gas that is 8000 gal.
    One can fuel an average small car (like Nissan Leaf) 30+ mil/gal for 240,000 miles from this much gas.
    Life of the car.

    When there is an interruption in fuel in your area your prius just became one of the most valuable cars around. IF the others had sense enough to push their bricks off of the roadway? One NJ resident used his prius as a generator after Sandy. Google the story. If you own a brick and fuel service will not be restored for a week how much is it worth? I bet after you experience that crap you will gladly drive the prius. Range is king and is worth the extra we pay to own the car.

    While it's true electricity is not free, in California Southern California Edison offers an electric vehicle plan in which the rate drops so low from 10pm to 6AM that my electric bill is the same before I bought my Volt. It's still about $100. I program my dishwasher and washing machine to turn on when I'm charging my Volt in the middle of the night. So essentially my Volt does charge for free because my electric bill was $100 before I bought the Volt, and it's $100 today after I charge my Volt every night. The Volt is so huge, just test drive one. My ex wife bought one 4 months ago and still hasn't gone to the gas station. Amazing car!!!!!!

    My Volt has acurrent average lifetime mileage of 143 mpg after driving 10,400 miles in 7 months since I bought the car. I commute about 57 miles round trip to work. I burn .20 gallons of gas to complete my daily commute. That averages over 250 mpg. If the worst Prius owners have to say about the Volt is it only seats 4, then I think it's time to check out a Volt for yourself. 0-60 in 8.5 sec, handles great, doesn't look like a prius.

    I tell people this if you drive 20K miles a year or more drive a prius. If you drive less get an economy car. Why? Well the battery IDK how long they last so far our 07 is going fine we drove over 100K that means the car has returned us $10K in fuel savings that is more than enough to cover a new battery and make up for the additional expense of buying a P. Range is another GREAT reason to own P. 420 miles 80 mph or 550 miles 65 mph. Many NYers found out efficiency is king after Sandy.

  • @manoman0

    Not only that, I said that because I actually experienced a 2012 Prius. I was actually shocked by the cheap materials. Then I knew, once that car starts to fall apart, you'll be better off dumping it instantly. I will check the Volt and see how I feel about that one. My feeling tells me it will be good. All models GM actually cares for are well built, the others are just slapped together.

    I drive 44 miles round-trip each day to work at a Toyota dealership. Roughly 2/3 of my daily commuting would be gas-free. Boy, that would be nice.. As for whether or not the higher price of the plug-in is justified, I'm not sure. I really wish Toyota had made the Plug-In Prius more like the Volt, but I understand why they didn't- look at how well the Volt sells.
    All in all, I think plug-in is the wave of the future. It really does make a lot of sense once the cost of the battery is justified.

    I think it takes only 4 kWh for a full charge (and about one hour and half with the 230 V/ 3 kW socket or 3 hours with 110 V one), including charging losses (the battery is 4,4 kWh but only 3,4 kWh is actually charged), in a good sunny day with one kW of solar PV you can produce even 5-7 kWh per day

    There is very little enviromental damage with production of batteries...disposal is. Carbon isn't even an issue with lithium based batteries though...so if we can agree that the batteries used in a hybrid decrease overall emissions why do you disagree more distance on the batteries decreases emissions...and cost to run...more so. I don't have a clue where you're coming from with the 200,000 miles...it's ridiculous. It's closer to 25,000 and I personally use a car well past 200,000 miles.

    "about 50 cents to fill which is about half what the gas would cost" Ok so is it worth your time every day to plug and unplug to save 50 cents of gas for the day? and you paid how many thousand more for this plug-in version? at 50 cents a day, 5 days a week, how many years will it take to break even? and that doesn't include your time which is likely worth more than 50 cents. I love the car marketing but the numbers really don't add up to value. The standard prius even so many years later is a much better economic decision.

    So the Volt battery has a range of about 43 to 51 miles on a charge. You can go 100 mph on battery alone. It is very powerful. 274 lbs of torque at 0 rpm, which means it will not only blow the doors of a so gay Prius, but will also beat most cars to 40 or 50 mph. It does 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. The battery is cooled and heated to keep it at optimal temperature dispute outside temps or use. It is warranty is 8 years, 100,000 miles. Price is unknown since none have had to be purchased or as far as I know failed. Estimated at $2,500 I've heard. Prius is a joke at 15 miles per charge. The Volt can get 900 mpg if you drive less than 40 miles per day. What is you commute? Don't ever find your self single and driving a Prius, or you'll be single the rest of your life.

    The prius both normal and plug in is obsolete compared to the 2016 Chevrolet Volt that will give you 50 miles in a full battery

      Prius has potential. All places don't have electricity infrastructure as in developing countries.In those areas prius is good. It has market that's why it's the highest selling hybrid I guess. My opinion..

      Once gm can perfect a conventional internal combustion engine, then I may look at their new technologies. Until then... I will stay with reliable Toyota.

      Lord Megatron chevrolet volt= ridiculous tank size, less performance on hiway because of it's small engine. The prius its the ying and the volt is the yang

    This review is biased. The base Prius doesn't have anywhere near the options that the base plugin Prius does, so you can't say that "it's $8k cheaper" and just leave it at that.

    so after driving for 15 miles the car will run out of power?

    • @brianmcg321
      @brianmcg321 8 лет назад +4

      No. You have 15 miles of pure EV range then it acts like a regular Prius getting 50mpg. It has a gas tank also.

      Just think of it like a Prius+. Its just a Prius that gets more like 65-70mpg versus 45-50. But if most of your driving is less than 10 miles a day you could go months without ever filling up if you charge every night.

    Funny how there are so few comments after I left info on my Volt. Do you know why....because the Volt is way better and Prius people know it. Any category,except for seating capacity, and the Prius looses by a huge huge margin. Even the Volt has 4 bucket seats that look totally cool when you lift the hatch. When the Volt is around...I can hear on crickets from Prius people. We all think Prius when we think economy, shit I did, but those who know about economy vehicles that are totally cool think Chevy Volt!

      I also like the Chevy Volt. But people might not be responding to your stats on the volt because its a little off. The battery range, even in the revised and improved version of the volt was bumped up to a max of 38 mi which is an increase from its original launch where the volt got 35mi on electric. If the volt could do 51 miles on a charge it would definitely be a very attractive purchase.
      I'm sure you can get those numbers if you hyper mile and do a lot of coasting, but that's not real world.
      And remember, in cold weather electric and hybrids get less efficiency so that comes in to play for some buyers.

      Minh Nguyen I live in Minnesota. For roughly 7 months of the year I get 50+ miles per charge (mix of city and highway). During cold weather, at temperatures above the point at which the engine turns on to help keep things warm, I get 35 miles per charge. No idea how the EPA rated my model year at 38 EV miles.
      I will be getting the gen2 Volt at some point and fully expect to get 70+ miles per charge if it's going to be rated at 50.
      Cold weather effects the performance of all cars, especially short trips.

      Christopher Feist Wow that's impressive. And good to know from a first hand user. Those are the kind of reviews I like the best because its real.
      I haven't heard of anyone getting 50mi on electric charge. Are you Hyper-Miling or Pulse and Gliding at all? How fast would you like to drive on the freeway? (theoretically of course..)
      Gen 2 Volt will be awesome, but now that I've seen the BOLT...man I want that car more. It seems so utilitarian. The Nissan Leaf gen 2 at 150mi per charge is attractive as well. I love having all these choices. Prius Plugin is still a contender too.

    so i love how people (most people i know that drive prius plug ins are the way to save the world "" when really they are just as good as a dodge 3500 that rolls coal with a 10 inch lift with 55's on it. people think there so good for the environment. do some research on how there made especially the there batteries. then get back to me. so go spend your money on something else then these over priced "hybrid cars"

  • @manoman0

    These cars are not made to last, they're too cheaply built, too filigrane, we won't see any 2012 Prius on the road in 30 years. Talking about waste. And what about the material to build a Prius. It's shipped all around the planet. It's not an environmentally friendly car.
