It'd be great if you could take a look at Dennis DeYoung's live skills... he's in his 70s and songs as good as he did back then. Great vid, by the way.
My dad took me and my brother to a Styx concert on June 26, 2016. A week later I had bought myself a guitar and was already trying to get a band together. I liked all the modern horrible stuff before that and that concert changed me much for the better and I'm still jamming now and it's really all because of them. Great stuff!!!
I have seen Styx live 8 times and they are so sooo under rated it is sad. I have been a Styx fan since 1972. Yeah I am ancient. I would love to see them live again but I can’t even afford food everyday so it is just a dream. Aside from that. I even received a personal letter from the great Chuck Panozzo. (Lost when my home was taken) I have seen many bands live and none have come close to the energy the guys of Styx bring.
I'm 50 and have been a guitar player, bassist, and subpar singer since I was a kid. Lately I've found myself looking back at all great bands who were organic and played their asses off like this. I've also found myself gravitating to home recording "artists" and finding that organic vibe again. The cream will rise. I think another great era of real music is brewing as we speak.
Their not in their 60's maybe 30's then. I just can never tell how old Tommy Shaw is,because he always looks young. At 70 now he look and is rocking like then. JY the same. What a guitar player.
To put this song in perspective: This concert video was from 1996 -- Tommy Shaw was 43 Years Old Blue Collar Man was written in 1978 Even though Styx had probably played this tune 2,000 times leading up to this show, they still delivered this tune with full on vocals, incredible musicianship and such vibrant stage presence that you would think the tune was only 1 year old and playing it during the Pieces of Eight tour in 78-79'.... And Styx (Tommy Shaw) still perform this song impeccably today; even at the age of 67!
When Styx show,I MADE SURE I AM UP FRONT for best seats and Every song was just like that.. Legends!!! Little River Band is that same level...No Joke!!! Supreme musicians..Does the same to me,burnt into my guts!!!! Got to go work, now will have Styx playing in my brain...(Many thanks,).Salute!!!
My first concert❤️. Aerosmith and Styx was their back up band. Nassau Coliseum Long Island. I was 14 or 15. Will never forget. I love Styx. Sailing away 🎤🎸🎹
Styx Rocks! 1st class, amazing band! In my top 5, may very well be my no. 1... tough choice... Styx v. Rush for spot one... OMG... hard to choose! STYK x RUSH = AMAZING BANDS. 80s music fan here! 😂
Thanks!!! I missed the video. One of my favorite bands since 12yrs old (I’m a young 50yr old now lol) “paradise theater” (styx) and “Escape” (journey) “On the radio” (Fonna Summer) and “Hi Infidelity” (REO) my very first 4 Lps. GREAT BANDS!! My dad and Step-Dad both were and still very established musicians and when I was 12-14 my step-dad told me ya can’t look down at your guitar and you MUST sing (at least backup) or you’ll get passed up or another guitar player that can. Great advice... I’ve always stayed true to that and even later became a lead song as well even acoustic solo acts (more money). Sorry for the long story. Thanks again!! Ya Rock Ken!!👍🏼
One of the classic rock era's most amazing singers; a vocal powerhouse. He still sounds the same, in his late 60s. Not sure how singers manage that, but he's done it.
One of the great privileges I had in my life was after missing Yes and Led Zeppelin shows when I was an exchange student in Pennsylvania USA was having attended the Styx show at Steelers Stadium in Pittsburgh in 1979 (I dropped the almanac ) They featured basically The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and I think one or two songs from what would become Cornerstone. It was my first rock show in a stadium and I was blown away for life. It's rock but it has a lot of progressive.Something strange was that Dennis DeYoung with a peculiar voice timbre did not seem like a rocker. Tommy Shaw as a Gibson man and James Young a Fender man always. Regards from Mar del Plata, Argentina. City of Aldosivi! the port soccer team haha
Styx have got to be one of my all-time favorite bands ever! The line-up DeYoung, Shaw, Young, and the Panozzo brothers was the best! Their albums running from Equinox through to Kilroy Was Here have stood the test of time as some of the best music from the late 70s and early 80s. I can plop on their music and drop into fantastic mood. And, personally, I think that Come Sail Away is one of their greatest songs ever. My only regret is that I never got to go see them in concert during their heyday.
First rock concert I saw. 1977 Grand Illusion tour. 2 1/2 hours with TWO encores; and the encores were like 3 songs each. It was like the best concert I ever went to. I’ve seen them at least 12 times since. Each and every time they throw down. Good to see that you truly get their goodness. Man in the Wilderness is my favorite Tommy song. They started adding it to their show in the last 5 years or so. The fans appreciated it too.
it's a great song especially because of its message I think anyone who got called into the supervisor's office during layoff-time at 4PM can relate to this tune!
When I was in fifth or sixth grade, my dad showed me “Mr. Roboto.” I fell in love with the song and listened to it all the time (I actually choreographed a dance to it and performed it a concerning amount of times). Last September I got to see Styx live... my very first concert! At that time, Styx wasn’t a favorite band of mine. I only knew “Mr. Roboto,” “Renegade,” and other popular hits from my dad and the Greatest Hits CD I had purchased a couple weeks prior. After the concert, I was BEYOND amazed. I started listening to more of their content after and they became a close second to Journey. They are an incredible band, and I am so glad that I can appreciate that now. I think about that concert almost every day. I am pretty sure I cried. Surreal. The way I felt when the band walked on stage was something I had never felt in my entire life. I hope the upcoming Journey concert makes me feel the same way!
I think he was the lead in Dam Yankees, "Come Again". My favorite song from that band. Rock band I was in back in the 80's did Blue Collar Man cover. Good memories.
Great video...I feel the same way about Styx. Seen them about 10 times starting in 1981 to present and each time the show is a blow out...what an amazing band ...and so underrated
First concert I ever saw was Styx Grand Illusion tour. Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung were absolutely instrumental in the beginning and what has become a 40-year singing career...so far!
Was in 12th grade when this song came out. It makes me think about the people I hung out 41 years ago. Life goes way too fast ( seems like last year). Enjoy today and treat those you are with love..... 🙂
Tommy Shaw is so underrated as a vocalist...I saw him back in 2004 at a Rock to the Rescue concert and he jammed with all the bands..he can harmonize with anyone at the drop of a hat..His solo albums and the album he did with Jack Blades were absolutely amazing and sadly kind of overlooked..I had his album The Great Divide on repeat on my old cd player in my car years ago...Amazing work on that album!!!
@@kentamplin Question: Can this soon-to-be 54 year old baritone hope to smooth out my passaggio enough to even come close to approximating strong, clear notes above f#? I love love love singing and I'm not quite ready to give up on the prospect of becoming far better than I've ever been.
I saw them twice myself. The 1st time was in 1978 during the "Pieces of Eight" tour at Convention Hall in Asbury Park NJ, a little 1,500-2,000 seat arena, the 2nd was in 1983 for the "Kilroy Was Here" tour at Bryne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ. Both shows were great. Also saw Heart during their "Little Queen" tour at Convention Hall on August 16th, 1977. The date should be familiar, it was day Elvis died and they dedicated Zeppelin's "Rock n Roll" to the King during the encore.
Did you see Tommy at Daryl’s House? 62 years old, pulls up in the car, hops out, goes into the studio and proceeds to kill it. No warm up, no nothin. Tommy’s voice is as good today as ever. Amazing.
He said it was the slowest version of "Renegade" he'd ever played - and I tried to keep pushing the beat through my tv. Love him!❤ And Daryl couldn't believe Tommy's upper range. Sighing.
I saw Styx live in Billings, MT when I was a teenager....and I wish I could have seen them when I was older. I liked Styx growing up, but I didn't appreciate the quality of music they produced (especially live), but I do now. Good stuff.
I saw Styx on that tour with Kansas opening. Styx was fantastic all around. Steve Walsh was having a rough time of it, which was sad because he had one of my favorite voices of the 70s.

One of my favorites from Tommy Shaw was Boat on River followed up by Alligator in the Water. Boat on the River is such a great song and showcases Tommy Shaw's voice.

Dont shoot the bassist
Chuck is the man...
All your bass are belong to us.
As a guitarist, wannabe singer. Having been in bands, I can say. It is all about the Bass.

Styx live never disappoints. You can't have prog rock without premier talent.
My fav of that band.
Pure talent…Pure energy…
So skilled....no holds barred rock and roll ! Awesome Ken
♥️ Tommy Shaw
Nothing wrong with old Ken! Brilliant!
And Tommy still sings this in 2022❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️my Idol !!
Ken one more thing should I get Botox in my jaw to relax it... I’m having horrible vocal fatigue 😖😞
Shaw is amazing!!!!
Just fantastic 👍😁
There is nothing like a good live rock show. When a band makes you want to sing and celebrate their music then they have done it right,
One of the most under rated singers! Tommy Bleeping Shaw!
Rock on! 👍
STYX always one of my inspirations ! Awesome talent, Great Rock !
The key is enjoing playing what you love what you chose doing for the rest of your life. Music !!!❤

Rock on!
Styx, Journey, AC/DC, Bad Company.....we were so freaking lucky growing up.
Sure were!
Tommy Shaw is a total rockstar, and that’s an understatement.
Thanks for the visit, rock on!
Love Styx, Mr Shaw eats right and takes care of himself. I Saw them at Hershey Park last year and they were amazing 😍
For Sure STYX is awesome! Every time I've seen them.... they just ROCKED....great entertainers. Love those guys... =R=
Rawd 59 👍
many metal bands should envy such orchestration
I'm praying on it daily!
Saw Styx last year these dudes are still killing it!

They need to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They really had a huge influence in music and they've never even been nominated.

Wow! Loved this video👍. Great to see how styx has done well for so many years. Ken, was fun watching you get excited too🎤🎼🎸
The bass player is Chuck Panozzo and his brother, the original drummer John Panozzo, they are the original members and founders of Styx..

Maklan Saenz 👍👍👍
I was fortunate enough to see Tommy Shaw in 1984? with his own band (not Styx) at a small venue in OKC. He ROCKED! Just a stellar show.
Awesome, paxonearth!
