Unflattering lighting and angles are the worst thing for me. I try to ensure pictures I take show my beard at its best. The thing that gets me the most are the small dips between my mustache and cheeks, but that’s really more of a pattern than a patch. Gets covered up with enough time. Fortunately, people definitely don’t notice the perceived flaws nearly as much as we do with our beards. A good compliment can even turn around a bad beard day for me. That’s partly why I also try to give them out to my fellow beardsmen. You’re spot on about the age thing. My beard has been considered a “full beard” since my mid-late teens, but it looks way better now. Biggest change I’ve seen is the underlip patches almost completely disappearing. Never thought it would happen. Ultimately, all of our beards have their own personality, and there’s almost always a good way to rock what you’ve got.
My beard insecurities still exist. You never really get over them, 100%. It is just the mental chess match you play and some days, you don't even care. Other days you just don't let it beat you. I've been growing for a couple of years now... and honestly, it irritates me it's not where I want it to be. I'm talking 100% coverage, crisp lines, and a perfectly sculpted beard with some greys, a distinguished and purposeful look. What helped me? #1 this channel. Reaching out to Dan and other people and genuinely asking for help, guidance and overall remembering that it's a marathon. Keep faith that it's gonna get better. Also like Dan told me and he mentioned in this video, someone out there wants your beard. #2 Talking to your barber. Having that honest conversation what your insecurities are, and going over options of how to cut style, and even products to use. #3 if the first 2 don't help, go to a doctor and get yourself checked out. See where your hormone and other blood levels are. Again being honest and explaining your concern. #4 the most important one... rock what you got. ROCK WHAT YOU GOT. That doesn't even require an explanation but here it goes. This is your beard. There are many like it, but this one is yours. Nature gives your unique look, style, and personality. Why don't you have the "perfect beard" because yours is perfect for you! That patch here, or that awkward direction there, that curly hair here, or bald spot there is what makes you, YOU. If we all look the same, we'd be pretty fucking boring. Dead ass! Grow without shame, enjoy the journey, try out some awesome products and appreciate yourself and give yourself that grace. As my teacher says, STAY BEARDED, STAY POSITIVE!
My piece of advice is to look in the mirror less. What I mean is figure out your routine with oil, style, etc and make the most of it while you're there but once you walk away from doing your routine don't check your reflection every 15 or 30 minutes or whatever.I get it you're at work and it's lunch time and you want to bring your mustache back to excellence with a little wax go for it but after that choose to tune out what you think you look like. While I love my beard and my mustache I am intentional about not letting myself become too vain about the way I look. There are more important things in life than our beards. Like Dan says enjoy the journey and you can't enjoy it if you think about too much. If you do you're obsessed and you need to change your thinking. Hope this helps someone.
sometimes my biggest insecurities come when I am feeling like my beard is looking REALLY good, then someone comes along and makes a comment about this or that...All of a sudden I am wondering if I even know what looks good/right. 😐😐😐 But your comment on comparison is the thief of joy is on point. I know that I feel that in my job as well. Thanks for the reminder to keep on keeping on and keeping our eyes fixed on that which brings us joy.
I saw a guy recently who had a 6 inch-plus beard that he grew in only 3 months! Beard envy hit me hard that day (I've been growing my beard for over 19 months, and it's probably around 3-4 inches). But, he complimented my beard, and I just have to keep on the journey!
Oh jeez. You hit the nail on the head. I'm currently growing my beard out as I decided I want to go terminal. I've decided that in the past and always wound up shaving it because of the very insecurities you're talking about in the growing process. I have a wavy soft beard. Is definitely not patchy it's a full beard, But still wavy and soft. All the hair on my face grows from my left side towards my right side. It comes to a point at the corner of my right jaw line, Because the hair on my right side of my face grows diagonally downward and towards my shoulder, But the hair directly under my jaw line on my neck grows upwards and towards my ear. So when I comb my beard it is a point. Add that to the fact that everything essentially grows from my left side to my right side and I'm fighting it constantly and always finding myself somewhere in the growing process where I look in the mirror and say that's gross even though I know it will probably be amazing once it's long. Is I had better stick through at this time
Just to be honest, I was riding on a 15 month trip (Yeard...), and two weeks ago I reluctantly committed to a trim. No regrets. Lots of time and patience gettin to that 15 mo. but it does look and feel better after taking a couple inches off.
Great video & topic! Agreed with Dan that you are your worst critic. For every 1 complaint I get I see 10 beards that I envy! Enjoy the journey because yours is unique! Thank you Dan & keep it up!
Amen Dan just enjoying the journey love it. I kinda stand out I sometimes feel with having a longer beard when most guys I see just have short timed beards I wouldn't dream of trimming it down there in my mind it will stay a part of me untill it drops out naturally. Just going through the more shredding phase or I just notice it more like you touched on in a pervious upload.
Thanks Dan another great video. I keep trying to grow a true yeard and I end up trimming it like I just did after 7 weeks of not touching it at all. The bottom of my neck looked so ridiculous that I just said, let me make a neckline and trim it down. The way I did it to get the beard in my photo was a lot more fun. I started with a neckline and then I let it go down down little by little to a point where I didn't touch it at all at three inches of length. When I grow a long beard again, it doesn't have to be a yeard. I do care what people think and how I look. That's why I just can't seem to grow a yeard.
I have had to overcome working in retail with a beard and have been told I am the best at wearing my beard net which I despise, but I don’t ever want my beard to get noticed in a way where I am constantly told to put my beard net on etc… I also have to overcome aftermath of regrooming my beard after work and it’s the worst but I have kind of mastered it along the way. I wear a hair net same color as my beard and often have associates ask me beard questions and direct them to this channel. 💥
I usually get beard insecurities a few times a week. To combat this I keep telling myself to wait to the end of the month and If I have not had any positive thoughts on it between now and then, then I can shave it. It has been 1 year and I have not gone a full month hating my beard.
Great one once again! My insecurities lie in my sideburns. I go for the natural, no fade look and some days they’re quite crazy. Other days they’re perfect. I also get the “wings” near the back by my ears where it bumps the shoulder.
“Comparison is the thief of joy” - what a perfect quote for this video and one of my favorites as well!! When it comes to beard insecurities, mine is probably just the overall volume, density, and thickness. There are some beards out there that look like they could conceal a small animal haha - 😂 Speaking of animals, what an amazing choice of sponsorship for the Grow-Vember series. I am an avid animal lover, so we are super excited to take part again this year! 🐕 Thanks and great video!
Soooo true. I want to grow my beard to 10-12 inches, but I'm around 4.5 - 5.5 inches. But the bottom line is I enjoy the daily routine of taking care of my beard and I know it'll eventually get there!
I definitely have things that I obsess over in my beard. Part of the reason I trimmed shorter was to prove to myself that all the things I learned growing my beard long, would help eliminate some of the issues I had growing it out the first time. I am very satisfied that the skills I learned DO apply, but I NEEDED to learn the techniques on MY beard for the techniques to work. When I tried to follow all the advice the first time, it was close, but not tailored to MY beard, so I was always left less than happy, and that's when the beard envy really hit. I am very pleased whit the re-growth process, in fact I've kept it around this length for about ten months, and now feel it's time to add a little length back...
I get on my head about my side of my beard but I always get back to other videos that you had made and I get out my head. One beard product that has help me a lot is bearded Mack. Love your videos always informative. Thanks.
Great points Dan, I have the bad habit of comparing my beard with others and think mine isn’t that good, but I get a lot of compliments on my beard especially when it is long. I also let thoughts live rent free in my brain when people say something about my beard and management regarding my beard, it’s never been negative and I’ve never received any criticism from management about my beard in fact I’ve been complemented on it by my boss, but I have trimmed my beard thinking about my professional appearance and I need to just enjoy the journey
Thanks, for the reminder Dan. I’m coming up on my 5 month mark of my yeard. I have about an inch of transparency at the bottom of my beard that drives me up a wall. The hair on my chin and cheeks is growing much faster than my neck but I don’t want to trim yet.
My beard insecurity is that i have a French fork. I know it's a thing and some people think it's the coolest but to me it just doesn't look right. My hope is that I can get the short center part to grow to a length I want and then trim my beard even based on that.
Having a well kept beard really does require a lot of mental discipline, and requires men to confront a lot of insecurities we may have about ourselves. I think on some level we have understood the great mental fortitude that it takes throughout history. Ancient cultures often depicting philosophers and kings with beards as a sort of mark of wisdom, even in ancient Egypt (which otherwise considered hairlessness next to godliness) depict Pharos with "postiches" (fake beards).

Comparing your beard to another's can give you ideas on what you would like to achieve instead of being envious. I'm currently in the beard awkward phase waiting on parts of my beard to grow longer so it will be more even.
@@DanCBearded thanks for the immediate feedback. I'll take your advice and search for a length I like. Thanks for supporting the Humane Society in Flint, I support Canine Companions Rescue Center in Oxford, MI and have adopted three so far.
My biggest concern is uneven growth. It drives me nuts. I don't cut my beard hairs. It's just hard when people see the same thing and tell me about it.
Bro I need a quick advice from you as I am about to trim my long beard a little bit in 2 days. Should I use the trimmer sideways or vertically on the beard below the chin portion to the Throat area??so to maintain the beard line above one finger over the Adam's apple as well..I want to reduce the beard length a little bit until the full beard and moustache doesn't come to prevent it from looking shabby..
Hello bearded nation. I've always loved everything about my beard. The shape, the density, the color. But, I always had it pretty short, like my profile pic 😅 I've been letting it grow since early October, and now I'm having some insecurities about the shape of my beard, I'm at the weird phase 😅 specially underneath my chin, because the hairs curl a lot to the left. Because of that, a week ago, I made the mistake of trimming it a little bit too much 🙈 but, live and learn, right? 😅 Also, my mustache. I'm having insecurities about how I want my mustache to look like in the future. That's because, I hate having hairs covering my upper lip, but I also love the effect that a great mustache has on a full beard, instead of a trimmed mustache. If I trim the bottom part of my mustache, it looks too thin and it also looks like my lips are super tiny 😅 And I think that's it, for now 😂

I've been letting it grow since early October, and now I'm having some insecurities about the shape of my beard, I'm at the weird phase 😅 specially underneath my chin, because the hairs curl a lot to the left. Because of that, a week ago, I made the mistake of trimming it a little bit too much 🙈 but, live and learn, right? 😅
Also, my mustache. I'm having insecurities about how I want my mustache to look like in the future. That's because, I hate having hairs covering my upper lip, but I also love the effect that a great mustache has on a full beard, instead of a trimmed mustache. If I trim the bottom part of my mustache, it looks too thin and it also looks like my lips are super tiny 😅
And I think that's it, for now 😂
Many of us relate to that journey!
I keep feeling like mine is very transparent and Erika is lying to make me happy LOL
I also HATE pictures on phones.
Phones and lighting can play sooo many tricks on your brain
I have a thin spot on my chin causing a French fork that used to drive me insane
Love to see the phrase USED TO in this one 🤝 that’s what it’s all about
