Problem with fish farming is that all the chemicals and medicine used for faming are thrown straight into the water. This interacts with surrounding environment directly spreading polluting lakes, rivers and surrounding envidronment. Also the antibiotics are just dumpen in water also increasing resistance and freely spreading those resistant bacteria everywhere. At least with farm animals the problem is somwhow contained. Also farmed fish is most of the time many times more contamined with chemicals due to generally more loose regulations on feed and chemicals. If they used some lake or pond that didn't interact with other water sources, I would not be nearly as concerned. But these are just placed on public waters. Farmed fish is pretty much worst food you can eat. Even US factory farmed cow's, which are disgusting are better than farmed fish.
Yes. The fish are stressed & deformed and marinating in their own waste, parasites, rotting food and chemicals. They're also polluting surrounding mussel farms here in Oz as well as polluting our world heritage national park.
As a fisherman who has eaten wild and farmed salmon (a few times), I can say that wild salmon taste much nicer. I don't eat salmon at all now due to preservation and a poor imitation. I dislike this practice for many reasons. I can't see it ending, though.

No, I realize crops are also bad for the environment, but animal agriculture is significantly worse. It would be best for the environment if humans went extinct, I'm obviously not in favor of that but we can do things to reduce our impact, like eating less meat.
This supports the denial of renewing open-pen fish farms in my area of the Broughton Archipelago, from the facts of science and observations in Norway. My community of Sointula, BC, Canada, is in solidarity with your First People's occupations of the fish farms at Swanson Island and Midsummer Island. Our community has commerical fishermen as well as tourism based on the viability of the wild salmon runs. I've been to the first day of action at the Swanson Island Occupation and I plan to travel to support both fish farms soon. J S are you not updated? Since the 90`s they have reduced there useage of antibiotics by 90%. Pesticides has been reduced by 90%. And the use of ethoxyquin has been all around banned in norwegian farmed Salmon. Jesus Christ are you stuck in the 90`s-early 20`s? Norwegian salmon farming is the world leader on both production and quality.
@J S It is actually proven that wild salmon is worse to eat oftener than farmed salmon, at least in Norway. The documentary "norwegian farmed salmon world's most toxic food" have a lot of misleading information, so it is not a good source to get information from. It is also starting to get old and in a few years it would be almost useless to get information from.

FRONTLINE PBS seems to have no idea what they are writing of.On the script is written about river Vasso in Alaska??? and program is telling about river Vosso here in Norway. I live about 50km from river Vosso in Bergen .In the fjord where Vosso runs to the sea is at least 13 salmon farms which means miljons of salmons and rainbow trouts.Nearly every year escapes salmon and rainbow trout from farms and sometimes with lethal disease like a couple of years ago.Tens of thousands(about 90000 if i remember right) raibow trouts,with lethal contagious disease,escaped from one farm during storm and owners of the farm had not even informed National food Administration that fish are sick. Those fish should had been destroyed as toxic waste long time before they "escaped". Wild seatrout is nearly extinct and without putting hunreds of thousands farmed salmon cubs to the rivers and the sea same had happened to original wild salmon in all rivers which runs to same fjord.Sea lice kill's cubs when they migrate to the sea from rivers. DON'T BUY OR EAT farmed norwegian salmon.IT'S TOXIC and tastes like shit compared to wild fish.Fish farming is worst enviromental offense in Norway but many very very rich farm owners are among them who decide about fish farming and only money talks.

The companies say they have done a lot about the pollutions, escapes and sealeece but is it true? Im from Sweden where norwegian salmon is very polular. This has been largely remedied the last years. The pesticide they used has been banned and the bad pellets they used to feed the fish has also been banned. They now use a pellet which is 70 percent plant based. Studies have shown farmed salmon is now less polluted than wild salmon.
I can imagine that the farming isn't perfect but pepople stop telling that to eat "wild" animals is better. It may be healthier or tastier but definitely not sustainable considering the number of consumers. If we pay with our health to save our planet I see that as a good trade.
As usual Frontline only tells half the story which they think is important. Sealice problem is often addressed with cleaner fish which love to feed on sealice. Many fish farms are using cleaner fish to control the lice and is working fairly well. As far as rainbow trout they are native to norway fjords and lakes
@Rickie j its the decline in fly life that has decimated salmon and trout stockes and that decline was even in all rivers. Bob kiness restocked the Carron and his smolts swam right through the fish farms and returned in good numbers go read about bob kiness restocking programe even the wild trout in the hils are disapering. I was discusing it with the Assent Trust they witnesed the decline.
@Rickie j you are wrong . Files nynphs live on the rocks in rivers and lochs for years and the get snaped up by young salmon and trout. The Victorions named nymps and flies the young salmon and trout feed on. A hole catoerey of nypms and flies are at very low numbers now. The pink salmon is now tacking over our salmon because there young move to the sea as soon as they hatch to feed in the sea. So thats why pinks are now in europe nature fills a gap left by the decline in fly life in nuterline decline freshwater.

1. If you want salmon the only choice is farmed. The amount of wild salmon in Norwegian rivers would fit in two farm cages. 2. Among the farmed salmon, the Norwegian salmon are by far the most regulated and safest. The use of antibiotics has plummeted to one gram per ton fish compared to almost one kilo per ton fish in Chile.
Tobias Henriksson It's not just the use of antibiotics but also the pellets and pollution of the war Norwegian salmons consume. In reality, we should not be consuming any salmon at all farmed or wild caught. Farmed you can't eat because they have the shittiest regulations in the meat industry and wild caught we cannot eat because it's destroying the eco system.

Yes, farming fish in a Norwegian fjord may cause some local eutrophication but it is not considered a big problem due to the depth and circulation from the Atlantic sea. I agree that in some areas farming shouldn't occur. The Norwegians, however, are trying to move the farming out at sea. During the summer I visited the famous rock carvings in Alta and one of the several thousand year old carvings showed a person angling from a boat. Sure, technically we don't need animal meat but it's not something that will change in near future. Among the different animal meats, fish is by far the most ecological. Growing one kilo of fish only requires about one kilo of feed. In chicken this requires three kilo and in beef it is 8 kilos. Did you know also that they have started feeding fish soy proteins instead of caught fishmeal? I took a course called Advances in Aquaculture last spring and I can tell you that the industry is slot more regulated than you think. There is also a lot of research in fish health and how to make farming more sustainable by farming on land or using the effluents to farm oysters and macrophytes.
Based on the papers and documentaries I've read/seen, fish is easily the most poorly regulated of all meats. Pretty much all meat isn't sustainable even with a soy diet, and that has huge influence on our estrogen and inflammation levels.

For the longest time I thought it'd be really good for my health eating salmon or fish in general... Now I know the baltic sea is a shithole for fish and it's apparently the same with fishfarms everywhere. :(
The tails say volumes to the health of those salmon. Those are the saddest looking things I have ever seen! They look like they have been burnt off by all the pesticides and the nasty water that those farms contain the fish in. The truth is they never develop correctly from the start! Don't care how good salmon is for me, I wouldn't feed that to my worst enemy! They are filled with all sorts of stuff that is bad for you, that it has to negate any positive qualities.
Trust me this isn't even that bad, look at documentaries of their disgusting tumors, swollen red gills, genetically deformed mouths that stay open, etc. It is truly horrifying to look at and looks like a science experiment.
Just looking at that trout in the net - you can see it has way too much slime on its body. Having worked on a salmon farm briefly - I used to think it was a pragmatic approach to feeding humans and taking pressure off of wild stocks. Now I just think the industry should be shut down globally. I am all for freshwater fish farms in self-contained tanks or artificial ponds but that is it. The practice just doesnt work in an interconnected ocean ecosystem.
Since this film was made four years ago, new standards and rigorous quality control protocols including feed, have been introduced in several countries to avoid or eliminate the problems identified in this film. Of course, many countries have ignored updated regulations and conservation doctrine. But large international organizations are beginning to regulate and certify origin of farm fish and must be inspected regularly. It will not prevent bad local fish farms that only sell locally, but it will impact export market opportunities. Export demand for certified healthy high quality farmed Atlantic Salmon is now fetching premium prices in the international market space. Some countries now dominate this space because of the adherence to these new standards. Fish farming is sustainable if rigorous oversight is maintained.

The only way battery salmon feed lots could be sustainable is if they were contained on land. Sustainability is the new catch phrase the industry feels obliged to be seen to addressing but all they do is dupe people with on their packaging, just another lie and distortion by the industry as they chase their tails tackling one issue after another. There are problems and mile long, the whole practice is untenable, trapping that many migratory fish in extremely dense areas, a fish that would move from open water ocean narrow gravel river beds every year - of course it doesn't work! The so called cleaner fish is one of their green washes and has no effect, in fact they get as infested with lice as the salmon. The whole industry is a sham, a flabby, pink rush of greed and environmental disaster, reliant on people staying ignorant to the reality.
It doesn't matter that farmed Atlantic Salmon is fetching premium prices. McDonald's battery chickens are selling well too, they're both pale imitations of the real thing.
@@SewerPossum Industrial salmon production (I refuse to call it farming - it's less like farm than battery chicken production) is far worse than battery chickens, they accept a mortality rate annually of 20%, the feed and faeces are left to pile up on the bottom, 'cleaner fish' are ineffectual, they tip chemicals directly in the water ... etc etc. None of which would be acceptable in battery chicken production, the salmon industry benefit from being mostly out of sight / out of reach.
Assuming that meat eaters have no valid argument for criticizing the consumption of farmed salmon/trout leaves out other more intelligent arguments. The movie reflects the lack of knowledge of toxicity in fatty tissues of farmed fish. Into account must also be taken the food consumed by the fish. Concentration of heavy metals, pesticides and other environmental toxins in the feed pellets for the farmed fish, makes especially farmed salmon a true toxic food source to be avoided. Therefore meat eaters especially have a valid argument and right to criticize farmed trout/salmon, especially because they rely on their meat not to be a health hazord!!! The movie/clip is in my opinion vague at best and has no bite to it!

fish farming is great if done properly. Im in aquaculture education right now. its not as bad as the media says, yes it has its problems, but its healthier than wild salmon. Wild salmon has more metals the farmed.
@Pat McRotch Pat McRotch The seafloor examination they take every other year show that the seafloor looks almost untouched 3 months after they remove the salmon in over 90% of the farms. There has been a huge reduction in escaped salmon and the pink salmon (hump back salmon) is now a bigger problem for the wild salmon than farmed. The industri is also using less and less of the chemical sea lice treatment and basically no antibiotics. If you buy ASC certified salmon the WWF recommend eating it, and it's guaranteed without antibiotics. Most of the farmers use lump fish, which eat the sea lice, and life skirts to reduce the sea lice. The chemical used in bathing treatments like H2O2 will dissolve to H2O farely quickly and will have no impact on the people eating the fish. DDT is also banned in fish farming, and it is proven that farmed fish has less heavy metals than wild fish, since you have more control over there feed.
I'm a vegetarian hunter/fisher, and hopefully one day, rancher. My wife calls us huntatarians. The only meat we eat are what we harvest ourselves. So, for now, whatever we hunt or fish for. I decided to do this before our kids were born, so they could decide whether or not to be vegetarians, huntatarians, or the run-of-the-mill omnivore. They are 9 and 5 now, and aside from fish we catch ourselves, they don't want to eat any other animal meat. If that changes, we're okay with it, but bringing them up this way let's them understand the cycle of life and death, and whether they are okay with it.

There are several problems in aquaculture that should be managed, but there are just not enough fish in the sea to go around, most os the populations that make the other hlaf off fish supply are already exploited at or beyond susteinable levels
Funny how these points are never brought up in these videos, just the negative sides of fish farming. Where I live fish farming is the main industry, and the local fish farming companies has funneled BILLIONS into research and development to combat the current problems of the industry. Because they know fish farming is the future. Whether people like it or nor not, with our oceans dying from over-exploitation, in the future fish farming will be the only sustainable way to meet the growing demand of food.
You're right, a farm raised pig is more pleasant to eat than wild boar, but humans have had 9000 years to figure it out. I hope there is a future for Salmon aquaculture. For now, a wild caught Northern Pacific Salmon is king, but if humans get it right, not use antibiotics, and feed the Salmon a proper diet, it could be a great future...for us anyway.
A feral pigs in captivity will lose their "wild" attributes (hairiness and long tusks) in two generation and a domesticated pig will acquire the same wild attributes in two generations. How long is a generation? 6 months. So the first agrarian humans learned about domesticating pigs in a year not 9000 years.
But, I farm raised pig in a small farm in a large pen, fed a variety of vegetables and grains, is more humane and tastes better than "farm" raised pigs trapped in small cages and overfed and given antibiotics...

Come too norway and see for yourself how strict the laws are. Heck, people like me (marine biologist) has strict laws too for farming the salmon and I work for the goverment. Its more dangerous to eat a wild caught fish then a farmed norwegian salmon. Don’t always believe what you watched on a RUclips video. Most marine biologist would disagree that the farmed norwegian salmon is «highly toxic» at the point we would care. Its about 1-2% of the biologist which thinks so. Nothing more.
i have always enjoyed Salmon, but nowdays basicly everything in the shop says "Norway Salmon" on, and the part with that is that i know it's not wild, becus the color is something different, but what you can really know that it's an farmed fish is the ugly discusting taste.. it taste like what they eat, basicly themself and other ingridents that i don't want to know.. basicly it taste like shit and medicine. so i don't eat eny salmon enymore not even our own Sea salmon that swim around finland, but ofc, we have our own farmed salmon to.. dosent mather where they come from, there is no "wild" enymore, all you can find is quality shit that cost more then your house.
Oh yeah, wild salmon is fancy. But we have hundreds of people with the right to enjoy the health benefits of salmon, so, the only way is farming. FRONTLINE PBS seems to have no idea what they are writing of.On the script is written about river Vasso in Alaska??? and program is telling about river Vosso here in Norway.
I live about 50km from river Vosso in Bergen .In the fjord where Vosso runs to the sea is at least 13 salmon farms which means miljons of salmons and rainbow trouts.Nearly every year escapes salmon and rainbow trout from farms and sometimes with lethal disease like a couple of years ago.Tens of thousands(about 90000 if i remember right) raibow trouts,with lethal contagious disease,escaped from one farm during storm and owners of the farm had not even informed National food Administration that fish are sick. Those fish should had been destroyed as toxic waste long time before they "escaped".
Wild seatrout is nearly extinct and without putting hunreds of thousands farmed salmon cubs to the rivers and the sea same had happened to original wild salmon in all rivers which runs to same fjord.Sea lice kill's cubs when they migrate to the sea from rivers.

This has been largely remedied the last years. The pesticide they used has been banned and the bad pellets they used to feed the fish has also been banned. They now use a pellet which is 70 percent plant based. Studies have shown farmed salmon is now less polluted than wild salmon.

I can imagine that the farming isn't perfect but pepople stop telling that to eat "wild" animals is better. It may be healthier or tastier but definitely not sustainable considering the number of consumers. If we pay with our health to save our planet I see that as a good trade.
As usual Frontline only tells half the story which they think is important. Sealice problem is often addressed with cleaner fish which love to feed on sealice. Many fish farms are using cleaner fish to control the lice and is working fairly well. As far as rainbow trout they are native to norway fjords and lakes

@Rickie j its the decline in fly life that has decimated salmon and trout stockes and that decline was even in all rivers. Bob kiness restocked the Carron and his smolts swam right through the fish farms and returned in good numbers go read about bob kiness restocking programe even the wild trout in the hils are disapering. I was discusing it with the Assent Trust they witnesed the decline.
@Rickie j you are wrong . Files nynphs live on the rocks in rivers and lochs for years and the get snaped up by young salmon and trout. The Victorions named nymps and flies the young salmon and trout feed on. A hole catoerey of nypms and flies are at very low numbers now. The pink salmon is now tacking over our salmon because there young move to the sea as soon as they hatch to feed in the sea. So thats why pinks are now in europe nature fills a gap left by the decline in fly life in nuterline decline freshwater.

1. If you want salmon the only choice is farmed. The amount of wild salmon in Norwegian rivers would fit in two farm cages.
2. Among the farmed salmon, the Norwegian salmon are by far the most regulated and safest. The use of antibiotics has plummeted to one gram per ton fish compared to almost one kilo per ton fish in Chile.
Tobias Henriksson It's not just the use of antibiotics but also the pellets and pollution of the war Norwegian salmons consume. In reality, we should not be consuming any salmon at all farmed or wild caught. Farmed you can't eat because they have the shittiest regulations in the meat industry and wild caught we cannot eat because it's destroying the eco system.

Yes, farming fish in a Norwegian fjord may cause some local eutrophication but it is not considered a big problem due to the depth and circulation from the Atlantic sea. I agree that in some areas farming shouldn't occur. The Norwegians, however, are trying to move the farming out at sea.
During the summer I visited the famous rock carvings in Alta and one of the several thousand year old carvings showed a person angling from a boat. Sure, technically we don't need animal meat but it's not something that will change in near future. Among the different animal meats, fish is by far the most ecological. Growing one kilo of fish only requires about one kilo of feed. In chicken this requires three kilo and in beef it is 8 kilos. Did you know also that they have started feeding fish soy proteins instead of caught fishmeal?
I took a course called Advances in Aquaculture last spring and I can tell you that the industry is slot more regulated than you think. There is also a lot of research in fish health and how to make farming more sustainable by farming on land or using the effluents to farm oysters and macrophytes.
Based on the papers and documentaries I've read/seen, fish is easily the most poorly regulated of all meats. Pretty much all meat isn't sustainable even with a soy diet, and that has huge influence on our estrogen and inflammation levels.

Based on other documentaries Norwegian salmon is so polluted that is dangerous to the human health. Wouldn't touch it at any cost.

The tails say volumes to the health of those salmon. Those are the saddest looking things I have ever seen! They look like they have been burnt off by all the pesticides and the nasty water that those farms contain the fish in. The truth is they never develop correctly from the start! Don't care how good salmon is for me, I wouldn't feed that to my worst enemy! They are filled with all sorts of stuff that is bad for you, that it has to negate any positive qualities.
Trust me this isn't even that bad, look at documentaries of their disgusting tumors, swollen red gills, genetically deformed mouths that stay open, etc. It is truly horrifying to look at and looks like a science experiment.

Wild fish matters
Just looking at that trout in the net - you can see it has way too much slime on its body. Having worked on a salmon farm briefly - I used to think it was a pragmatic approach to feeding humans and taking pressure off of wild stocks. Now I just think the industry should be shut down globally. I am all for freshwater fish farms in self-contained tanks or artificial ponds but that is it. The practice just doesnt work in an interconnected ocean ecosystem.
Since this film was made four years ago, new standards and rigorous quality control protocols including feed, have been introduced in several countries to avoid or eliminate the problems identified in this film.
Of course, many countries have ignored updated regulations and conservation doctrine.
But large international organizations are beginning to regulate and certify origin of farm fish and must be inspected regularly.
It will not prevent bad local fish farms that only sell locally, but it will impact export market opportunities. Export demand for certified healthy high quality farmed Atlantic Salmon is now fetching premium prices in the international market space. Some countries now dominate this space because of the adherence to these new standards.

The only way battery salmon feed lots could be sustainable is if they were contained on land. Sustainability is the new catch phrase the industry feels obliged to be seen to addressing but all they do is dupe people with on their packaging, just another lie and distortion by the industry as they chase their tails tackling one issue after another. There are problems and mile long, the whole practice is untenable, trapping that many migratory fish in extremely dense areas, a fish that would move from open water ocean narrow gravel river beds every year - of course it doesn't work! The so called cleaner fish is one of their green washes and has no effect, in fact they get as infested with lice as the salmon. The whole industry is a sham, a flabby, pink rush of greed and environmental disaster, reliant on people staying ignorant to the reality.
It doesn't matter that farmed Atlantic Salmon is fetching premium prices. McDonald's battery chickens are selling well too, they're both pale imitations of the real thing.
@@SewerPossum Industrial salmon production (I refuse to call it farming - it's less like farm than battery chicken production) is far worse than battery chickens, they accept a mortality rate annually of 20%, the feed and faeces are left to pile up on the bottom, 'cleaner fish' are ineffectual, they tip chemicals directly in the water ... etc etc. None of which would be acceptable in battery chicken production, the salmon industry benefit from being mostly out of sight / out of reach.

Assuming that meat eaters have no valid argument for criticizing the consumption of farmed salmon/trout leaves out other more intelligent arguments. The movie reflects the lack of knowledge of toxicity in fatty tissues of farmed fish. Into account must also be taken the food consumed by the fish. Concentration of heavy metals, pesticides and other environmental toxins in the feed pellets for the farmed fish, makes especially farmed salmon a true toxic food source to be avoided. Therefore meat eaters especially have a valid argument and right to criticize farmed trout/salmon, especially because they rely on their meat not to be a health hazord!!!

fish farming is great if done properly. Im in aquaculture education right now. its not as bad as the media says, yes it has its problems, but its healthier than wild salmon. Wild salmon has more metals the farmed.

They started out with rainbow trout, but found out that atlantic salmon was easier to farm. So now they raise both.

@Pat McRotch Pat McRotch The seafloor examination they take every other year show that the seafloor looks almost untouched 3 months after they remove the salmon in over 90% of the farms. There has been a huge reduction in escaped salmon and the pink salmon (hump back salmon) is now a bigger problem for the wild salmon than farmed. The industri is also using less and less of the chemical sea lice treatment and basically no antibiotics. If you buy ASC certified salmon the WWF recommend eating it, and it's guaranteed without antibiotics. Most of the farmers use lump fish, which eat the sea lice, and life skirts to reduce the sea lice. The chemical used in bathing treatments like H2O2 will dissolve to H2O farely quickly and will have no impact on the people eating the fish. DDT is also banned in fish farming, and it is proven that farmed fish has less heavy metals than wild fish, since you have more control over there feed.
I'm a vegetarian hunter/fisher, and hopefully one day, rancher. My wife calls us huntatarians. The only meat we eat are what we harvest ourselves. So, for now, whatever we hunt or fish for. I decided to do this before our kids were born, so they could decide whether or not to be vegetarians, huntatarians, or the run-of-the-mill omnivore. They are 9 and 5 now, and aside from fish we catch ourselves, they don't want to eat any other animal meat. If that changes, we're okay with it, but bringing them up this way let's them understand the cycle of life and death, and whether they are okay with it.

There are several problems in aquaculture that should be managed, but there are just not enough fish in the sea to go around, most os the populations that make the other hlaf off fish supply are already exploited at or beyond susteinable levels
Funny how these points are never brought up in these videos, just the negative sides of fish farming. Where I live fish farming is the main industry, and the local fish farming companies has funneled BILLIONS into research and development to combat the current problems of the industry. Because they know fish farming is the future. Whether people like it or nor not, with our oceans dying from over-exploitation, in the future fish farming will be the only sustainable way to meet the growing demand of food.

You're right, a farm raised pig is more pleasant to eat than wild boar, but humans have had 9000 years to figure it out. I hope there is a future for Salmon aquaculture. For now, a wild caught Northern Pacific Salmon is king, but if humans get it right, not use antibiotics, and feed the Salmon a proper diet, it could be a great future...for us anyway.
A feral pigs in captivity will lose their "wild" attributes (hairiness and long tusks) in two generation and a domesticated pig will acquire the same wild attributes in two generations. How long is a generation? 6 months. So the first agrarian humans learned about domesticating pigs in a year not 9000 years.
But, I farm raised pig in a small farm in a large pen, fed a variety of vegetables and grains, is more humane and tastes better than "farm" raised pigs trapped in small cages and overfed and given antibiotics...
