To most of us, Texas is the best state as far as music programs. I just got my teaching license here in Mississippi but I hope to move to Texas soon. One of my friends actually told me that a lot of percussion teachers in Texas don't even bother getting a license. 🤔🤔
I've only worked with one percussion director that had a teaching certificate. The other 5 percussion directors that I've worked with were employed as paraprofessionals that made minimum $40k. Texas band is such a different universe from other areas of the country. I dream about working in a daily environment with multiple other competent instrumental teachers and musical adults. Here in Connecticut, school districts are small, and in most high schools each music teacher is responsible the entirety of their program, with no assistant directors, no itinerant instructors or anything like that, unless it happens to be a very large school. Our whole state is the size of the DFW Metroplex, with less than half the population, and we have 161 cities and towns, operating around 140 K-12 school districts. Looking at Texas and other states around the country, it just looks like we're utilizing our geography and personnel very inefficiently, and our students' music ensemble experience suffers as a result. I'm not saying we need to be more like "the Texas model," but I wish we at least had a similarly well thought-out system for the way our music programs operate, the way our schools and administrators relate to band, and the quality of experiences our students have. Just a thought while we're rethinking the way we do everything during COVID...
