I have a cool connection to Norm. My father and him were roommates up at Northern Michigan University. My dad talked about how Norm would put up drawings on their door and people would always steal them because they looked so good. My dad even had some nature drawings Norm did in college, and sent him back to him later in life. Norm has such great energy, and didn't get the credit (or financial support) that he deserved.
Norm Breyfogle comic art is amazing. I´m not sure his work (specially on Batman) has the recognition it truly deserves. Masterful sotrytelling, but also, the dynamics on the composition and layouts, the velocity on his lines, the body language on each character... sublime stuff. Detective Comics 601 to 603, "Tulpa" remains my favorite Batman story from that era. Great episode guys.
Tulpa was the first one I saw and I was hooked on Norm’s style
If there was ever an artist who had a greater impact on Batman than your usual Frank Millers or Jim Lees, Norm Breyfogle is by far the gold standard, as he, Jim Aparo, and Graham Nolan defined an era
My God! Thank you for this. Breyfogle is one of my all time favourite Batman artist. So incredibly underrated imho. His confidence in storytelling, anatomy, and composition elevates the most mediocre story. But paired with Alan Grant they created the best ever Batman stories, and made a Bat fanatic out of me. I wish they made comics like these today. Absolutely phenomenal!
finally! i'm so glad breyfogle is getting covered here. he does not get the recognition he deserves....his run wasn't prolific but his batman IMO was the best! he's MY batman for sure
I have a longbox of Breyfogle Batmans. I love his covers more than any other comic art. So unique and bursting with energy.
I remember seeing this or the next issue and Batman said "DAMN!" and lol I freaked out as a 9 or 10 year old.
Oh it was the issue before this one where Cornelius Stirk shows up! That's the one I remember getting, and then this one probably years later.

Stirk actually showed up really recently as one of the main antagonists in Batman Unburied! It was great to see him again
Breyfogle is my favourite comic book artist of all time.
Stirk has appeared many times in the 90's. Usually a minor role. But there was also a two parter story about him in Shadow of the Bat, as well. He also appeared in an issue of the Knightfall storyarc
When I first became a newbie of collecting comics , Norm Breyfogle was the man to make me spend my dads and teenage money on Batman Comics ! The DVD store owner told me they were brand new and never opened since his shop was effected by the LA riots this was around 2016 it was a Lowkey shop. RIP to NORM

I loooooove Norm Breyfogle. During the 90s he was one of the few reasons to pick up a DC book. Just exquisite artwork and storytelling on a monthly basis and for me in the top 5 best Batman artists of all time. Hes that good. I have to say though this issue your covering is not even close to being one of his best books. Check out Batman 461, 465 or his Shadow of The Bat run. Breyfogle was one of the greats. RIP.
Norm Breyfogle art will always have a special place for me. First comic book I ever owned was Batman 465. That book sadly did not survive my childhood. Read the covers off it. Totally going to dive for these pre 90's detective stories now as well.

Awesome video! I drifted away from comics in high school but fell back in love with them in 1988 when stationed in Washington D.C. (lots of really cool comic shops). The Breyfogle Batman books were instrumental in getting back to reading and collecting. These books just hit me so hard in the feels. Thanks for giving Norm some love guys!
One of my faves! I too got this right off the rack back when it was first out also, and bought the previous issue before hand (which was the first part of this storyline.) This issue has a weath of eyecandy and storytelling goods. But that cover was especially magnificent to me. I'd stare at it for ages, I photocopied it and drew it, Brefogle's take on Batman was daring and unique and as an aspiring artist I ate it up.

The colors of old school news print and 64 color scheme are so much more to my liking.
Copra. Copracabana 🎵🎶. Sorry 😉. Norm Breyfogle. Such a great artist. I began reading Batman comics in the late 80s when Breyfogle drew them. Absolutely loved them and I still do.
DC has been reprinting most of the 80’s Batman and Detective issues in trades. It’s great because Breyfogle’s stuff is in a lot of them. I bought the Black and White statue they came out with too. Always been a huge Breyfogle fan. One of my favorites growing up, along with Kelley Jones.

Breyfogle is completely off my comic artist radar. I know of him and that he worked on Batman comics, but that's about it. Good to see a video of his comics. Considering Grant as writer, Breyfogle probably would have fit well at 2000AD (some of his art feels Ian Gibsonesque to me). Thanks for the video, Kayfabe!
Of all my favorite Batman artists, Norm Breyfogle is #2, behind Jim Aparo and before Irv Novick. I think Detective 491 was my first Breyfogle Batman and I just flipped, and followed his work wherever he appeared (even his miniseries Metaphysical).
this one actually was a two parter. You need to get the one before this. It has Abe Lincoln attacking a woman, on the cover.

As someone who came of age in the 80s, "good" comic art for me was defined by (a) John Byrne, (b) George Perez, and (c) Art Adams. Artists like Breyfogle and Staton (to name just two) baffled my sense of "good" art, and at the time I couldn't stand them. Even today, those same biases are hard for me to overcome.
There are so many things I like about Norm Breyfogle’s work, but it has a little bit too much of the angularity that always bothered me about Carmine Infantino.
I was never a Norm Breyfogle fan when I find I have holes in my Detective collection was because I would pass over his books because when I was younger I always felt tricked as a kid they would have Gil Kane, John Romita do covers then on the inside you have artist like these artist style Frank Robbins, Frank Springer, George Tuska, Herb Trimp, Marie Severian , Jim Aparo , Gene Colon these where all the artist I didn’t like or care for but as I got older I begin to appreciate All or most of there styles springer was better when he was younger he had a more Noir style I was more a Perez , Byrne, Romita both ,Lark Thibert Starlin fan or snob. At first it was covers and characters then interior art my first Ironman was iron man #4 1968 Johnny Craig was the Artist I thought his style was smooth clear consist next issue they replaced him with George Tuska man was I bummed out I have Ironman from 2 up I didn’t have many early Hulks cause I didn’t really care for Severin and Trimpe style and then I started to appreciate the writers, then artists and Writing teams. Since then I have evolved to a more appropriative Connoisseur of various art styles, for instants Sandman mystery theater Matt Wagner Writer, Artist Guy Davis This is one of my Favorite series in my collection. I say this to say I appreciate Breyfogle I no longer see it as a confusing manic mess or Colon’s as a smeary over inked mess
