The Mako and Ray II are insane for the money. I wore a Ray II as my daily for over a year and the crystal never scratched (unlike with Seiko's I've had). Don't let the crystal put you off. Buy one of these and live happily ever after.

Great review. I have on my wrist now my beloved Orient Ray 2, and love it. I’m wearing it on the original bracelet. Before I had it on a bright orange nato, loved the contrast but the steel bracelet is more comfortable.

I have this watch and I love it. The lack of drilled lugs and a mineral crystal affect me not one little bit. I also have a Kamasu or two. And other Makos and Rays. And some Kannos as well. Orients are well represented in my rotation. This one is a real 'go to' watch and if you look around it can be found for less than $150 USD pretty readily.

Accurate an just almost same build quality as swiss watches ranging from 1,000 to 3,000. Some of orients designs are out of wack. But when they do it right, they do it RIGHT. They need to stop the open heart. Ruins some beautiful dials. That is the only gripe. An bigger crowns.

I've got the Ray 2, basically the same watch with a different dial. Great watch, I'm wearing it right now, and don't let the mineral crystal scare you away. I wear this thing all the time, and it still looks great. A cold little scratches on an edge, but you won't see them if you aren't liking for them. And if it gets too scratched up, you can always swap in a sapphire crystal, I'm pretty sure.

I have Orient divers with hacking and hand winding and think it’s terrific. I am also a Seiko fan even their sport 5 models. A 100 meter 10 bar watch is not a dive watch but I have been ok so far with any 100 meter 10 bar watch. I do service them myself to be sure they are in top shape. Please note that recreational diving is approximately to 60 to 70 feet or 2 bars. That leaves a 8 bar reserve. To sum up Orient is a great choice along with a few others without breaking the bank and as far as I am concerned not sacrificing reliability or longevity either.

I’m new to Orient but I just picked up a lume face Mako XL (beautiful!) and a Pepsi Mako II for $100 each and plan on adding sapphire crystals to both at some point but the mineral crystals have only a few signs of wear and only when inspected under magnification. They are both keeping almost perfect time and are about +5 seconds a week so far, which is astounding for automatics of unknown age. I hear Orients get more accurate after a break in period and judging by external wear, it didn’t seem like either of them had very much wrist time before I got them. The Pepsi came with a Strap Code milled clasp jubilee bracelet with solid end links and I added a black faux gator strap with a simple Breitling deployant clasp to the XL and it looks amazing with its full face lume and polished bits and more pronounced (and easier to grip!) bezel edge with a slightly larger insert with easy to read numerals. For the Pepsi, I snagged a Barton’s navy and crimson rubber strap from eBay but I love the jubilee on it so much that I may pick up a second Mako II in blue to put the bracelet on just so that I can put the strap on the Pepsi. I am now looking at what I can let go of just to make room in the winder for at least a couple more Orients that I have my eye on. I am amazed at the quality and fit and finish at this price point and the ‘spec monster’ you want is just a few modded parts away and allows you to really explore your customization chops. There are tons of bezels and bands/strap options just for Orients and switching out the bezel to an SKX style opens up lots of ceramic and sapphire insert options from various vendors. I want to do a sub style bezel and lumed sapphire Pepsi insert when I do the crystal upgrade and with the reasonable price of entry, you can afford to really enjoy personalizing and getting a lot of wear out of them without worrying about something more expensive getting damaged. I wish I had discovered Orients years ago!

My initiation into this hobby was an Orient Ray Raven II (identifiable by only having one crown where the v1 had two). It was a very solid piece that kept within +/- 3spd. I gave it to my presumptive SiL, who tells me it stopped working, but while I had it, it was solid. I highly recommend Orient to value-focused, mechanical geeks, especially when they're starting out. There's nothing like a quality auto to make you appreciate the hobby. I currently own a a Sun and Moon v3 (deco arabics) in rose gold tone. I wore it when we eloped in 2020, so it'll stay in the case, pretty much forever.

I remember that I decided to buy an Orient diver because there was the rumor that Seiko was discontinuing the SKX, and its price increased. So, Orient had two models, the Mako and the Ray. And then, the Kamasu was launched, and I fell in love with the green model. It was a no brainer because there was no other diver with sapphire crystal at that price. Although I confess that the dial and handsets of the Mako look more elegant than the Kamatsu. I am surprised that you didn't choose the Orient Ray since it looks like an SKX

Both the Kamasu and this model are rated as water resistant to 200 meters (Suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving.)
The SKX was rated at Divers 200 meters (Minimum ISO standard (ISO 6425) for scuba diving at depths not suitable for saturation diving.)
So, technically not really an SKX equivalent diver.

I have an Orange Mako I and a Black Ray II. Put a domed sapphire in the Ray. Mako has an aftermarket stainless finish coin edge bezel. (Kinda makes it look a bit like a mini Seiko Orange Monster) They both have strapcode bracelets. Ray gets more wrist time but I love the Mako too.

This was my first automatic watch in blue. I still like to wear it sometimes mostly as a beater. Never measured how accurate it is.

Great brand. I own a red dial Kamasu as well as a grey dial new Kamasu 2. Also a blue dial Ray 2.
Paid under $250 for each Kamasu and under $140 for the Ray 2. Just awesome value offered by this brand. 👍

I have the Orient Ray II for over 2 years and it's a great watch. I've been wanting this Orient Mako II in the Pepsi colorway and has been sitting in my Amazon cart for a few weeks now. I may just pull the trigger on it. Also looking at the Islander oyster style bracelet for these models to give it an upgrade. Thanks for the review Jory! Happy New Year my man 👊🏽

I'm a proud owner of a red/blue Mako. It is really a spec monster for the price. I recently got a more "dressier" Seiko 5 and having both in my hand it really feels like they belong to very different price ranges! Instead the Seiko 5 was 20€ more expensive.
I'm in love with the hands and the dial that I find very original.

I once had the Mako the first edition (the tumor, due to the crown on 2) and this watch is awesome. So versatile (for dress or sport) and a very dependable beater watch ha ha

I have to admit I do love my orient divers watches I own 2 rays 2 makos and 5 kanos but I do love the kanos all but 2 of my orient divers have nato straps as find them very comfortable to wear I find metel straps at times to uncomfortable to wear and bang my wrists at times

My watch collection kicked off with an Orient Triton. A flawed but also great watch. My son got the bug too, my first gift watch for him was an Orient Mako 2 America, white dial.

Just bought the 2022 Kamasu Gen 2, comes with a sapphire crystal, coin edged bezel, updated bezel that is more sporty and less busy than the 2021 Kamasu, brushed case finish on the sides , burgundy gradient bezel/red dial, and beige colored lume new for 2022. A no brainer with the f6922 automatic movement and for $187.
Super excited as this is my first self-purchased watch ever! Been looking for almost a year now, and when this came out...I found my watch.

I have it in blue and I absolutely love mine for the same reasons. My major con, the crown size, it’s too small and the crown guards make that even more of an issue.

Just this afternoon the courier dropped off a blue Mako 2, used, but in excellent condition. Some scratches on the bracelet and a fairly large gouge on the bezel at 45. Are these bezels coloured all the way through? as the scratch is deep but still blue all the way. Anyway, I've wanted a Mako for ages and this one's price was a steel (50% of retail) so I snapped it up. And so far I'm lovin' it

I have the Pepsi model and I love it! It had a few qc issues which is uncommon for them, but still just love it!
Going at +3 sec per day, awesome for the price. 👏

Hello. I have the first gen blue Mako with the extra button for day change and my unit is very accurate, only about five seconds fast or slow during the day and I adjust it during the night by putting the watch face up to gain those seconds or crown up to lose them, for me it is not a problem the mineral crystal , it has been on my wrist for several years and it is like new.....I recently bought the Kamasu with that beautiful red dial as a birthday present for my son and it looks awesome on his wrist......on the other hand I must say that this unit is about twelve seconds slow per day with no way to gain some second by changing the position when it is on the desk during the night and the crown is difficult to screw. Cheers !.

Good watch, but having bigger wrists, I have the Kano (RAAA0009L19B) I solved the "problem" of the crystal by simply replacing it with a sapphire.
Best wishes for the new Year😁

I’ve bought two. A Pepsi for my son as his first mechanical watch. I liked it so much, I bought the black dial for myself. One thing I noticed, that I’ve yet to see any reviewer discuss, is that the “12” is offset to the crown side of the imaginary centerline - between the 60 second mark to the 30 second mark. Other than that, I really like the watch, and the black one in particular is a strap monster. It looks great on a silver/black Bond.

I prefer the Ray II. Full 15 minute markers on the bezel as opposed to 10 mins on the Mako II. Lume on the seconds hand.

I own this watch as well as a blue Ray II. I agree 100% that both these models represent about the best value you can find in a dive watch from a well-respected brand. I am not a fan of the notched bezel so I replaced the bezels on both with sub-style bezels and ceramic inserts. Even with those upgrades, I am still into each piece for not much over $200. Great watches for the money.
