Personally, I like deckbuilders. I think the fact that they've gotten so popular over the last few years has kind of tarnished the genre, because there's a lot of subpar ones out there. But this one looks VERY good. I would love to see more.
Knowing it's from chucklefish gives it a lot of promis, looks amazing
I think the problem is not that there are a ton of deckbuilders but they all have the same gameplay: the correct strategy is to find some broken combo and remove the rest of your deck so you can do it more often. This was fine when it was just one or two games, but all of them play the same. It's like all the Vampire Survivors clones that all try to innovate with things that are unrelated to the gameplay loop, so they all blur into each other.

@@nidungr3496 Good point, and I agree. Innovation is hard, but that doesn't mean somebody can't have a fresh take on an old formula. I don't think this game is going to break any boundaries, like Rimworld did for Dwarf Fortress fans, but I think there's enough here that it's not just another Slay the Spire clone.

Wait, your minions become the last boss of your next run? That's such a fun mechanic!
Kinda encourages you to not go to make TOO broken a run (unless you really want the challenge), which is nice given how many Deckbuilders end up getting stuck in a loop of nonstop wins.
Like, fighting that upgraded Snoffel you crafted seems like it'll be an absolute pain.
not really, it has smackback and frost/snow but they also only gave it 16 hp and no snow shield, meaning the exact same tactic that he used for every other enemy will obliterate him
wallop is in a similar fashion, they boosted him by giving it 20 hp and merging his effect into normal damage numbers, but without things like a shield he's ironically less of a threat
they don't seem to give you enough charms (maybe with crafting since it seems to open later?) to make anything so broken as to really up the difficulty
even oakgoon since she attacks less often, deals half the damage, has slightly less health and doesn't scale is ironically an easier boss than the initial frost guardian (despite when she does attack dealing 3 snow to an enemy)
that said...it is an interesting mechanic and will be neat to see just how impossible a run you can build for yourself
as far non-stop wins
the way I've seen some games stop that is with too much rng as well
so this is cool alternative to that

I might have missed something but I think you misunderstand the poison mechanic.
If you add 1 poison to an existing stack it adds way more value than if you re-apply it after it runs out.
Example:
5 poison + 1 extra poison
The poison deals the following damage.
5+1, 4+1, 3+1, 2+1, 1+1, 0+1
For a total of 6 added damage by the +1 poison effect.
0 poison + 1 extra poison
The poison deals the following damage.
0+1
For a total of 1 added damage by the +1 poison effect.
(This also applies for most games bleed effect)

Nah, I am aware of how that works. I believe what you're referring to is the fight with the enemies that had Damage Block. It was irrelevant how much damage they took as it would always equal 1, so min-maxing damage on them is worse than useless.

39:45 i know i'm three weeks late but actually that charm is amazing on flame water. Instead of needing to bother with applying it six times over six (or more) draws you just apply it once and then it stops clogging up your deck.

I’m pretty sure that consume on the frenzy charm means that the thing you put it on can only apply the frenzy once, not that the card can only be used once ever, so you can’t give infinite frenzy

I was a beta tester for the game and I really hope they’ve toned the difficulty as it was soooo hard before
Enemies get crazy strong throughout the run and your own units never got “out of control” strong to counter them

It's no STS but it is okay for what it's trying to do other than the RNG is tuned way too high in Wild Frost because sometimes it doesn't matter what choices you make your just fked.

It's definitely a strat game but I also see it as luck based sometimes.

Seeing that the game is out, and that my broke ass can't afford to really splurge on games anyways, I've gone out and watched streamers and youtubers play the game. I've come to the conclusion that its missing... something. I can't really put my finger on it, and its not the encounter balance as the vast majority of steam reviews seem to put forward. Sure, the game is challenging, the learning curve might be a bit steep, but its not that. I think there's a lack of structure. The Leaders aren't fleshed out enough to warrant their role in the deck, they feel like they should be directing the way in which the deck functions but end up feeling like a liability cuz the leader getting taken out is a gameover. Balance between leaders and companions is also egriegous. Chompom is a monster that can easily steamroll encounters if you build your deck around it, while someone like Pyra has a difficult time to shine without more lenghty setup (and in a game based on counters, a really interesting mechanic btw, this spells doom). I think that a leader rework is needed, maybe as non-unit characters and more as a health counter with special abilities (Think Hearthstone), but that's a major change that's unlikely to occur. A campaign mode would also be awesome as a tutorial with fixed encounters, story beats, and maybe a smidge of voice acting (no spoken lines, but emotes the way Hollow Knight characters do). Could help hammer in concepts and tactics that seem to elude some of the less roguelike savvy players. Idk, the game is too well-designed to just let go like that, and I hope the devs can find the missing piece of the puzzle that'll complete the game.
Edit: Additional Thoughts.
The crown is too strong and too *necessary* to ignore. It's a game design flaw when an option given to you in the shop nontheless is better than everything else. The ability to recall characters to heal is awesome... but it feels like i doesn't matter too often. The problem with leaders compounds this issue since units serve as shields to them. Retreating them is too dangerous and too taxing on the action economy. It feels like you either destroy a fight or struggle through it, with little middle-ground. Healing units also seem mostly irrelevent since dispatching enemies as fast as possible (with the exception of splitting/multiple phase bosses) is pretty much the better option.
