- 1 year of hype has payed off at last. Join me as I review the film that single-handedly wrecked the Thomas and Friends franchise, and started a domino effect that lead it to the all-time low point it's at today. I've been looking forward to this VHS review the most this year, and I bet I can say the same for most of you guys. Still have no clue when I'll be able to do Tomb Raider Part 3. But there'll be a live stream tomorrow as usual. And I'll possibly have a bonus video for you guys tomorrow as well. Until then, I hope you all enjoy my long-awaited Thomas and the Magic Railroad VHS review.
Great review! I really like Thomas and the Magic Railroad (Despite its flaws).
Same here m8.
@@trainlover16 I like it but it would’ve been better if the stupid test viewers didn’t ruin the original envision and kept the old 1999 script but overall despite its faults its still good
@@Simpsonsbloke24 Completely agree m8.
This has made me confident to do a TATMR DVD review as I thought it could get taken down and I hope I do it some day

And He's A Really Useful Engine
24:31 someone wrote in the comments of the PAW Patrol movie that Butch and Ruben reminded them of Splatter and Dodge similar to how I said they reminded me of Scratch and Grounder
I think I’ve seen that comment.
@@trainlover16 cool
41:35 I agree since it worked for Percy as Percy is the youngest engine on the railway
Yes indeed.
1:25:57 I love how the Magic Railroad hear looks like painting that was brought to life
Same here. It was definitely intended to look that way.
@@trainlover16 i agree
1:00:27 I also saw one of the production crew members who had a ponytail when he was working on the tugboat that was towing the barge filled with sludge that Diesel 10 falls in under the Viaduct had to wear fishing waders something that the production crew on Tugs had to wear when working on the set
I saw that in the behind the scenes footage too.
@@trainlover16 it's definitely fascinating
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Agreed.
Friend, I loved the film mentioned, in my opinion it is one of Thomas's best films because it is the only film with voices with different actors, I wonder if you could share the film, you can play the VHS tape in high quality 1080p with that effect VHS is so nostalgic 💙🚂🚃🚃
1:28:21 as a kid I didn't know they were screaming because of what they realised, I thought they were screaming because D10 was chasing thomas and lady
35:34 apparently there was also a reason for the scaffolding we see on the side of the sheds and that was because the sheds was going through an overhaul in an original part the script it was also planned for Mr Conductor to sleep in a hammock in the sheds instead of the camping bed we see
That’s right.
@@trainlover16 which also reminds me of an important bit of concept art which shows that originally Pinchy was going to be concealed in Diesel 10's roof and Pinchy would come out after Diesel 10 opened a trapdoor on his roof
@@williampulfer-melville8536 I somehow feel that would have been a more believable design.
@@trainlover16 agreed as he is hiding an illegal modification and it would have been interesting as well if the movie even explained where he got Pinchy and seeing as he is the most Sinister Thomas villain I wouldn't be surprised if he made some Shady deals with criminals in the past
@@williampulfer-melville8536 That definitely would have been some nice backstory to see in the film.
32:55 I quite like how they were able to recreate a life size model of the Fat Controller's office from the model series for this as it actually does look pretty good
Agreed.
@@trainlover16 it is just nice to look at i also love how the photo of Lady Hatt is actually the model from the TV show
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Lel, that actually is funny.
@@trainlover16 which now remind me even though I said there were no model humans in the film that isn't 100% true as we can still see Bertie's driver in his cab in certain parts of the film
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Ah yes of course.
I Was Watching Thomas And The Magic Railroad On Christmas Eve Last Year

19:55 James was Voiced by Susan Roman best known for her voice of one of the main character's in the Canadian show called the Raccoons and Percy was voiced by Linda Ballentine who many anime fans know best as the voice of Sailor Moon
Oh, Linda, that explains why Percy sounds better than James. At the very least, Micheal Angelis should have stayed as James.
@@trainlover16 agreed
@@trainlover16 not trying to be rude here but you frogot to mention splatter and dodge in your review
@@Simpsonsbloke24 Ah yes, of course I did. There was nothing for me to say about them though.
@@trainlover16 oh I see
45:12 now originally Mr Conductor's cousin Junior was originally going to speak with an English accent but they ended up deciding having him speak with a Scottish accent as they felt that the actor they chose for him had a voice that worked perfectly
I can’t decide which accent I would have preferred TBH.
@@trainlover16 I do think the Scottish accent works for Junior also on a side note it's very obvious that Junior is just a nickname and he is likely named after Mr Conductor's uncle
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Definitely so.
@@trainlover16 and I guess one of his parents may have been Scottish hence why Junior has a Scottish accent
Mr conductor and junior
1:00:29 there’s absolutely nothing with a middle finger. Because Alec Baldwin is trying to reach the scissors and he got it back with his middle finger. That’s a joke for a children’s film.
Mate, I was making a joke about Alec using his middle finger.
@@trainlover16 jokes in the children’s film
@@trainlover16 he should’ve used the index finger to get the scissors back
@@lamarsahadeo429 No, his middle finger was funnier.

1:14:13 Percy: So, Thomas, we must get Sathiya back to her grandpa now... in case Diesel gets rid of the railway.
Thomas: But how can I let Sathiya go without gold dust?
Naveed: (lying down) Only in the lost engine. (thinking and rising) Unless…
Thomas: Unless what?
Mr. Conductor: (standing up and facing Thomas) Thomas, will you please take Sathiya? I'm staying here.
Thomas: Through the buffers? But what if I go through the railway and my wheels don't work?
Naveed: But what if they do?
Thomas: But what if… if…
Naveed: Yes.
Thomas: What if it's dark?
Naveed: It will be for a while.
Thomas: And cold?
Naveed: Maybe.
Thomas: And how will I get back again?
Naveed: Because you're a really useful engine and will find a way.
(Sathiya smiles at Naveed then at Thomas)
Thomas: Then I'll try. (Thomas takes Sathiya across Sodor, through the dark forest and into the area where the magic buffers) I promise I'll get you home to your grandpa, Sathiya.
16:57 and hearing John Bellis voice for Thomas in that trailer that featured his voice shows that he would have given Thomas a heavy liverpudlian accent
Release Date On Monday 20th November 2000 UK VHS.
1:21:31 Junior Is Flying In The Air And Landed In James.
I think i mentioned this But Eddie Glen previously used that voice he would use for Thomas in Goodtimes entertainment's version of the Prince and the Pauper as well as Flicker in the British-Canadian animated series Blazing Dragons
Although human actors are used for the film, Lady Hatt and Bertie's driver still appear as models.
Aside from Bertie's driver, Sodor appears to be entirely devoid of people, including the engines' crews, guards and workmen, thus making the engines self-driven. Despite this, the passengers' shadows can be seen in some of the coaches' windows.
The town beside Knapford is replaced with trees, but many cottages and houses are seen during the windmill or at Knapford.
Also Percy was actually voiced by Linda Ballantyne.
William corrected me with that fact. And everything else you said is further evidence that magic railroad is not canon to the main tv series.
@@trainlover16 so it's likely the trees behind Knapford was done because the production Crew needed to recreate the layout once it arrived in Toronto and they weren't really given a reference sheet to go off
@@williampulfer-melville8536 That’s the most likely explanation.
@@trainlover16 though as he said before they should have just films the Sodor scenes at Shepparton Studios in England rather than shipping it across the pond so to speak
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Yeah, what on earth was the reason behind that?
58:13 yep and they bring up Henry needing Welsh coal in this despite having that problem fixed years before in season 1 so they do call it Sodor Coal again they needed to figure a way to why Burnett couldn't fire up Lady with all the other coal in the real world
Perhaps Lady only runs on Sodor coal because magic.
@@trainlover16 exactly and I think it would have been a much better idea if it wasn't actually the coal that was lighting her fire but the love and dedication that ended with her being fired up if that make sense
@@williampulfer-melville8536 That would have made even less sense, like how Inspector Gadget came back to life in the 1999 film “simply through the will of heart”. Defying everything logical and everything scientific.
@@trainlover16 true I'm sorry I just can't think of anything better
The dog in the thumbnail looks like pippin from come outside
1:20:15 you can clearly see that the portal Thomas went through just now was in a hole and I think we have the plot convenient I mean magic buffers to thank
LEL!
@@trainlover16 though that maybe an appropriate name for them
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Yeah, from now on I’m dubbing the magic railroad portals “plot connivence”.
24:31 Splatter and Dodge always reminded me of Scratch and Grounder from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog but then again that pretty much is what The bumbling Henchman archetype is and what Splatter and Dodge definitely do fit that description two other characters who fit that description are Butch and Ruben from the PAW Patrol movie
You’ve told me both those things before.
One day I hope Steve reviews may consider doing a review on Thomas and the Magic Railroad as it does have some pretty dark moments when you think about it
I agree, he absolutely should, we should request it to him.
@@trainlover16 agreed since he has done a review on Tugs and I think it would be interesting to see his thoughts on the movie
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Agreed.
1:06:49 well at least Lily is accepting that she is now in a land full of talking trains better than Richard in the 2011 Little engine that could
Lel, not very good adaptation of the classic story that was.
@@trainlover16 agreed though I will admit the nightmare train is quite an intimidating villain
@@williampulfer-melville8536 He needed more development in my eyes, what was his backstory for example.
@@trainlover16 true this is how I would have done his backstory he was originally a dream hauler who used to be bright and full of ideas however one day one of these ideas he had backfired this did not sit well with the other dream haulers or the tower and so he decided to get revenge by only making nightmares come true
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Could be a bit more developed than that, but it’s a start.

1:24:13 in fact when I was a kid I actually thought they used a real-life locomotive for Lady here

It's worth noting that Stacey Jones is the only character from shining time station whose original actress Reprised her role and I found out a bit more about her actress such as how she became an autism activist after her son was diagnosed with autism
Knew about her being the only actor who reprised her role, but not about her becoming an autism activist.
@@trainlover16 I just thought id mention it because I think it was really nice of her to do that I mean I know she did it because she found out her son had autism but still beneficial for others
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Yeah, I have major respect for anyone who’s an autism activist.
@@trainlover16 same that's why I had a lot of respect for actor Ed Asner as he was an autism activist due to having both a son and a grandson with autism and of course you may have heard he passed away last year May he rest in peace
1:34:55 and James A Williams has said in his review on all movies he considers Lady the Princess Luna of the Thomas Universe with that one scene in calling all engines that she simply a fragment of engines dreams and simply give them wise advice in their dreams
Well if they made that the case for Lady in Calling All Engines, then I’d definitely agree with James.
@@trainlover16 well she dose appear in a dream sequence
@@williampulfer-melville8536 But then never again in the series afterwards sadly.
@@trainlover16 indeed
Speaking of Princess Luna
It sure would be cool in my opinion to see some MLP voice actors in Thomas
I can definitely see Brenda Chrichlow as Nia with her Zecora voice,Tabitha ST Germain as Annie,Clarabel and Daisy with her Rarity voice and Tara Strong as Rosie with her Twilight voice
17:28 in fact you can actually see the actual station that was used for the filming of shining time on the Isle of Man today and you can see the station looks nothing like how it was for the film they put on fake timber on the Stone station house to make it look like an American station and the scenes showing the rainbow some locomotive were filmed on the Indian Valley Railroad
I’ve been through the very station it was filmed at, when I went on The Isle of Man steam railway on my Isle of Man trip in 2015.
@@trainlover16 that is so cool
@@williampulfer-melville8536 IKR.
Pt boomer was also there 1:28:23
12:34 yeah I agree with you the live action film with pretty bad in fact only watched the original live action film just for Rowan Atkinson
Oh, Lel.
One thing you have to keep in mind with this movie was that when Mara Wilson was cast as Lily her mother had actually died a year before filming
Yeah, that would explain why her performance isn’t as great as her previous ones. And it’s almost certainly one of the factors in her 12 year hiatus in acting following this film.
@@trainlover16 but in my mind actually does work for Lily as she is being sent to live with her estranged grandfather while her mother according to the films script was pregnant at the time and it is sad why Burnett became estranged from his family because he was still grieving over the recent passing of his wife Tasha and feeling like he couldn't keep his promise to keep Lady safe
This is exiting
You bet it is!
I've just realised that Neil Crone's voice for Diesel 10 makes him sound like a crime boss mainly because of that New Jersey accent
Oh wow, you’re right! How have I never thought of that before?!
@@trainlover16 it's fascinating isn't it
@@williampulfer-melville8536 You bet it is!
@@trainlover16 and this would also likely explain why Splatter and Dodge speak with Brooklyn accents as they do sound like typical movie henchmen because they are typical movie henchmen
@@williampulfer-melville8536 It’s a stereotype, but yes.
And this movie brings up the concept that there's magic on Sodor and that Sodor exists within an alternate reality from our world
Totally respectful of Awdry’s wishes for Sodor to be a realistic place, isn’t it. It’s clear as day why the vast majority of people don’t consider this film canon to the main series.
@@trainlover16 yeah though me personally I quite like that idea because really think about it the reverend W awdry always imagined Sodor as a place you could visit though I can understand why many people said he would not have liked it because it was never supposed to be a fantasy series
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Exactly right.
@@trainlover16 and I do like the idea of Lady essentially being The Guardian that protects the Gateway between Sodor and the real world
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Yeah, as I say in the review, I do feel that the magic element could have worked if Sodor wasn’t treated like a sacred mystical fantasy land that would be destroyed in an Armageddon type event if the railway and engine running between it were destroyed. The threat of Sodor being destroyed was just a cheap way to raise the film’s stakes if you ask me.

Apparently before John Bellis Britt Allcroft originally had either Bob Hoskins or Ewan McGregor in mind as the voice of Thomas
I found that out from a TATMR review by a guy called TwiceBrokenLeg.
@@trainlover16 now I think Ewan McGregor would have been an interesting choice for Thomas and thinking of what the late Bob Hoskins with sound like as Thomas he probably would have done his natural Cockney accent to voice him

Ah yes. PT “Ok” Boomer.
1:34:53 literally my favourite ending line to any film
I can see why, though the ending line that was originally intended for the film spoken by Britt Alcroft would have been better in my opinion. Plus, there are film ending lines I prefer.
Terminator 2’s for example: “Because if a machine, a terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too.”
@@trainlover16 alright
Edward is supposed to be in the movie Thomas and the magic railroad
43:48 I can agree but at least Eddie Glenn does try his best to give Thomas a British accent

Mr Bean. "Magic"
@@williampulfer-melville8536 😂😂😂😂 Ok, that’s definitely the most logical explanation.
I think Alec Baldwin narrated series 5 & 6 in the Classic Orginal Series in the USA & Micheal Brandon narrated series 7 the Final Series of the Classic Series until 2004 he narrated the New 2004 Reboot Half Model & Half CGI Animated Series Thomas & Friends Adventure Series until Blue Mountain Mystery with Mark Morgan takes over the 2004 to the Present Reboot series.
I thought it was interesting how originally the film was supposed to be narrated by an adult Lily who would have been played by Britt Allcroft herself and would have shown that she and patch got married as adults and had kids and this movie would have been her telling them thr story of Sodor
Lily narrating the story rather than Mr Conductor would have been better in my opinion, no clue why that was cut.
@@trainlover16 same also another interesting thing was that originally Lady was never supposed to have a face and was originally supposed to only communicate using her whistle which only Thomas could understand what she was saying

So how come Lady lost her face when Burnet hid her away in the real world, but Thomas didn’t when he went into the real world?
@@trainlover16 yeah it's interesting
I have a feeling the only reason The Fat Controller wasn't in this movie was because there were no other humans featured on Sodor either because they felt that would be weird having these live action humans alongside the little model figurines and so they came up with the idea of The Fat Controller going on holiday to God knows where just as an explanation for why he isn't in the movie

And of course a green screen effect was used to allow the live-action actors to interact with the model set which they actually had to take the models and the set all the way to Canada to film the movie and then after filming it was shipped back to the UK
I still don’t understand why they needed to do that though. What was stopping them from just filming at Shepparton Studios as normal? Surely that would have saved a lot of time and money.
@@trainlover16 agreed considering most of the actors had to fly over to England for the scenes being filmed on the Isle of Man
@@williampulfer-melville8536 That only makes the logic behind transporting the model sets to Toronto less understandable.

@@trainlover16 though they were intended to be in Day of the Diesels though their roles were replaced by Den and Dart in fact Paxton and Sydney were made out of the unused CGI renders of Splatter and Dodge and Norman was created using an unused CGI render of Dennis
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Why did they feel the need to create all new characters? Couldn’t they have just used the existing ones?
@@trainlover16 yeah
Why was Edward not in the movie
32:10 is your explanation.
Botheration!!!
@@lighteningmcqueen8837 Sam I Was Talking To TrainLover16 It’s when Thomas hit the buffers
Guess what! I’m doing Tinky winky and the magic universe soon
Interesting.
Can you do a henreys cat visit review next please
@@julieillingworth2567 No.
Henreys cat vhs review please
@ I said no. I don’t know a thing about that show and I’m ending the series soon anyway.
There was another song of locomotion By Kylie Minogue
Kylie Minogue is also from my home country Australia
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Remind me, has Kylie Minogue been in any films?
@@trainlover16 indeed she was the voice of Florence in the 2005 CGI film of The Magic Roundabout and most recently she voiced a Razorback in the Australian/American CGI film Back to the Outback
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Ah cool.
@@trainlover16 yep
And of course I know that James fan 1991 likes Thomas and the Magic Railroad as he writes it as canon in his series
How come?
@@trainlover16 well he does feature Lady a lot in his series to the point where he even wrote the Magic Railroad into his series
@@williampulfer-melville8536 But why does he consider Magic Railroad canon when the rest of the fandom doesn’t?
@@trainlover16 I'm not sure though he does combined elements of both the Railway series and the TV series in his series so I'm not too sure
VHS review request for episode 38 (Bugs Bunny’s overtures to disaster)
That could get blocked
1:34:53 and so we've come to the happy end of our story and it's time for all of us to go home just like Thomas
Very nice ending line, though as I told you, the one originally written would have been better in my opinion.
@@trainlover16 i agree I just can't help but to say it just because of how much I love that line

(Teletubbies big hug) and (Teletubbies go).
I certainly enjoyed the movie as a kid and I still do today though it is a shame that Neil Crone is now voicing Gordon in the reboot
Yeah, though admittedly he does do as good of a job now as he did then.
@@trainlover16 yeah I'll give him that as well as qudos to his UK voice actor for the reboot William Harrison Wallace as it is good enough for a UK dub
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Haven’t actually heard Gordon’s UK voice yet, but I’ll take your word for it.
@@trainlover16 yeah when it comes to the UK dub of the reboot William Harrison Wallace seems to be the only one that actually sounds alright as he also voices Bulstrode and Cranky in the UK dub in fact his voice for Cranky is spot-on I actually mistook it for Matt Wilkinson at first
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Oh cool.
And of course as I mentioned before apart from Lady all the engines were voiced by Canadian actors with a lot of them actually being quite good at doing British accents though it is obvious that Neil Crone and Kevin Frank don't give Gordon Henry Diesel 10 or Splatter and Dodge British accents as Henry speaks with a nasally New York accent and Gordon speaks with a Mid-Atlantic accent
I hope to get the avgn movie on dvd if I can since im such a huge fan of the angry video game nerd
Oh cool.

Also Edward is not in this movie I like to think that The Fat Controller took Edward with him when he went on holiday as his own mode of Transport
You know, that’s actually the most plausible reason for why Edward is absent from the film.
@@trainlover16 I'm glad you think so I mean Edward is definitely the most reliable so it's no one's at The Fat Controller asked him to be his mode of transport on his holiday
@@williampulfer-melville8536 Exactly right, he did once use Toby for a day out with his kids after all.
@@trainlover16 that's right and him Lady Hatt and their grandchildren had a great time

I don't care what anyone else says about this film, I love it! Always did as a child, and still even to this day!
This film, along with The Great Discovery & The Great Race, is REALLY underrated and needs more love.
I agree with TrainBoy that it needs deserves more credit and should stand as a piller of what once was and as a example of what classic TTTEAF did right.

Plus this movie, along with S1-8, did really well at playing with tone.
And to be brutally honest, I would rather watch this film over Big World, Big Adventures and the.... *Cough-Cough* Reboot, All Engines Go...

y' know the one of the only times test audiences were succesful were with the storyboards with toy story about 5-6 years prior.
woody in the story boards was original going to be an aggressive asshole, but the test audiences came and thankfully changed his character, too more bearable personality, however he still is hard vocal and strict at times.
