I often use a reach cast to mend my line upstream during the very end of the casting stroke to eliminate micro- drag. At least that’s what I have been calling it for years. Sometimes, especially in gin-clear spring creeks with picky fish. I guided a few of these notoriously difficult creeks for a couple years. You’d be surprised how many very experienced clients didn’t realize they were (dragging their fly and putting down fish) during the crucial first few seconds of their drift. Sometimes, if they would actually listen to their guide, I’d suggest they reach cast and stack an upstream mend into the end of their casting stroke. Many times they would hook up instantly, even after casting in the same spot for 10-20 unsuccessful casts, just by allowing their nymph to immediately drop in front of the fish. But I’m sure most of you already know this. The technique in this video is interesting though - one would expect a downstream drift would create a lot of drag unless there is a perfect uniform current (no cross current). But this may be the only way to present a fly to fish tucked into structure. I’m going to try it next time I’m sight casting streamers to Bull Trout or browns that are tucked in behind a log jam. Thanks! 🙏
