      @@veggieplot I used the toilet paper for carrots and they probably came up quicker than ever as I grow my early carrots in tubs
      In my house so they can dry out quickly
      But the loo paper worked rather well.
      I have parsnips with loo paper outside and planted them 15 days ago so not seen any so farl

    Hi Chris, Some great tips there the Tissue one is a good one and the Seed Tape i have heard before. You mentioned that you thought of the Seed Tape and you asked who the person was that started the Seed Tape, well after doing some research i found out the stuff below for you to read.
    I bet after reading this below you should have patented your idea, as a 16 year old girl 'thought? of the idea?' and so it was launched in 2010. (Sorry)
    In 1790, a Shaker religious community started to sell packets filled with seeds saved from the previous year. It was a new idea. Seeds for farmers had only sold in bulk quantities. At first the packets held only vegetable seeds, but by the mid-1800s, flower seeds were also sold. Sometime before 1918, Shaker seed tape was invented and sold.
    Claire Reid is the creator of Gardening Reel, a gardening solution she's invented to simplify food growing. Reel Gardening an award-winning patented invention, Reid says her biodegradable strips use 80% less water than traditional gardening methods, because they require water only at the exact location of each seed.
    Launched in 2010, Reid’s Johannesburg based startup produces a paper strip that that comes pre-packaged with seeds and organic fertilizers. These are spaced at the right depth and distance apart so they can be easily planted and maintained.
    Take Care,
    Barry (the Wirral)

      Hi Barry, that was really interesting and I raise my glass to her for following through. I particularly like the idea of added nutrients in the paper, a great solution. I'll have to see if I have my degree stuff in the attic and dig it out, who knows, I might still have the originals squirrelled away somewhere.

    • @veggieplot
      @veggieplot  3 месяца назад

      Hey Jo, the parsley was the first major success I've had too, although I have tried carrots and parsnip before. There's something about handling seeds that I can't quite explain, and the tape seems to remove you from the growing process, adding something man made and not as authentic. I'm going to try my parsnip tapes but wouldn't buy factory seed tape again. The parsley tape was from a neighbour.

    Thanks Chris, some great hacks there. Always water from below once seedlings appear. New to the deeper cells this year. looking forward to stronger healthier plants. Hey Sue, thank you and I think you'll find the deeper cells very useful. I haven't heard of Ojebyn before but will check it out. Fruit bushes are amazing as they just keep going year after year so once you have them, they hardly ever need changing, unless of-course we start a fruit farm... now there's an idea 😂

    Chitting seeds between layers of damp tissue in a lidded box in a warm place can help with stubborn germination. Just does this with some chard that wouldn't germinate. Thanks for all your videos. Trying some of your tomato recommendations this year.

    Hi can you explain how you use top soil and compost for veg growing ? Thanks

    • @veggieplot
      @veggieplot  3 месяца назад +1

      For my tubs I use a 3 thirds mix to rejuvenate the old spent soil, so a third garden compost from my veg scrap compost bin, a third soil from an old tub and a third fresh compost from a store bought, peat free bag. It's not a science as far as I do it and I'm sure a trained horticulturalist might have other ideas. Trial and error really, and do what works best for you, as long as there is plenty of fresh organic matter in the new mix and a healthy dose of organic soil life, I don't think you can go far wrong.

    • @veggieplot
      @veggieplot  3 месяца назад +1

      I should add that it also depends on what you intend to grow in the mix, as it might be too rich in the first year for crops like carrots. The best thing though is that there's always next year and a chance to give it another go.
