      I know. And he also challenged on her manners, because she didn't bother to be very polite to him when they first met. Imagine that. Steve 'Scoobydoo' Brady, lecturing Miranda Hobbs, Esquire on 'proper behavior'.
      They really started him out as a genuinely interesting guy.
      And then turned him into an kinda, sorta lovable, but also really annoying man child.
      All (presumably) because 'drama' is what people want to watch. I mean...it did work. I'll admit that. Their storyline wasn't boring or predictable and they were both great examples of 'imperfect but likeable' characters.

    This is more a work thing than entirely a money thing, but you can’t mention Charlotte quitting her job without talking about Carrie moving to Paris with Petrovsky. That was idiotic on so many levels, way beyond the fact that they too had nothing in common. What was her plan? No French intensive class? No book-length writing project? Even if they had been wildly in love and truly compatible, he was in Paris to work on his gallery opening. What did she picture herself doing every day after the first week or so? How does a grown ass woman have no better sense of purpose than that? Oh that drove me crazy. Still does obviously…

      Part of Carrie's arc is that she is a Romantic with a capital R- so she is big into her idealistic view of things and does not have any sort of pragmaticism or particular purpose. So when we view Carrie, we see what happens when a Romantic person makes Romantic decisions- they are laughably bad. Carrie sees herself as a sophisticated, Romantic New Yorker- but in reality she is a provincial, rather naive person who lacks real curiosity about Paris, France or even trying make new acquaintances.

      No. She wasn't ready because there were too many changes coming at once. They get back together, but then they agree to live together, then they get engaged after, what, a month or two? That's a lot for someone used to being on their own. She wasn't ready. Plain and simple. Carrie communicated that to Aidan, and in the end, he couldn't handle that. He thought he could "lock" her down, and she listened to her feelings.

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl 3 месяца назад +9

      @@rabbit_scribe No it's very possible. Based on what Vogue paid her (about $2000-$2500 a month), we can extrapolate that the New York Star was probably paying her about $8000 a month (assuming her column ran weekly), and that's not unheard of for a popular column in a major newspaper 25 years ago. So she had a pretty good income, and she was spending hardly any of it on things that weren't clothes, cigarettes, and eating out. Heck, sometimes when she was eating out, it was on a date that I'm sure she wasn't paying for. So with no savings and very little other expenditures, I can see her being able to "afford" that lifestyle, especially with the help of credit card debt.

    • @manyworldsvideo
      @manyworldsvideo 3 месяца назад +30

      Not so long ago a popular columnist could make $100k per year, so her income wasn’t that far fetched. But those days are gone.

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl 3 месяца назад +36

      Well, I have several points on that topic and how it's fully plausible.
      1) She bought the shoes over the course of probably at least a decade, not all in one year or something.
      2) She negotiated Vogue into paying her $4.50 a word for the articles she wrote for them, presumably about 500 words once a month. That's a $2000 paycheck from Vogue each month. Now, she did take the Vogue job after the apartment-buying fiasco revealed that she really needed to increase her income if she wanted to continue her lifestyle. But we can extrapolate from that what she might have been making from her column for the New York Star, which probably ran weekly. It seems like she actually was making a pretty good income from her column, probably at least $8000 a month (not entirely unlikely for a popular column in a major newspaper back then).
      3) She had pretty low other expenses. Her rent was an absolute steal since it was rent-controlled. When she does briefly look at other apartments because she can't afford to buy her own, it's shown that the current market rate for apartments smaller and worse than hers is MUCH higher than her current rent. And of course she had no children, no chronic health issues, and no car since she lived in NYC.
      4) She isn't making financially responsible moves. She has virtually no savings. I would not be surprised if she has pretty much nothing in the way of retirement savings, nor would I be surprised if she doesn't even really have insurance of any kind. And she regularly maxes out her credit cards. So it's not like she's spending that money on shoes and then has money left over to live well in other areas. She's not living well in a broader sense.
      So given all of the above, I actually find it fully plausible that she could indeed have that much to blow on clothes, eating out, and cigarettes (the first few seasons). It wasn't a smart choice, but she basically just prioritized spending on her vices above all other spending.

    How about the time Carrie spent almost definitely over $1000 for a new outfit for an event because Big's wife was going to be there, and she needed to impress her? And then Natasha ended up NOT EVEN GOING? That was not the best financial choice...
    Also side note, when Miranda and Samantha offer Carrie the money, she goes "No, I can't take your money." But shortly after comes to confront Charlotte. (I figure she was stressed about the situation and chose to take it out on her friend.)

    • @thatjillgirl

      That's exactly what was happening when she confronted Charlotte. She didn't actually want money from any of them. But she did notice when Charlotte very pointedly didn't offer, and I'm sure that did sting a little in the moment after Miranda and Samantha had just blithely offered. But she and Charlotte both knew she wasn't really mad about that. She was just making a mountain out of a molehill because she was stressed and in the mood to pick a fight. The fight fizzled out pretty immediately when Charlotte stood up to her.

    I have a slight different POV about Steve and the suit. I’m prefacing by saying that yes I may have a myopic view on this and assessing misogyny as a cisgender male. That said, I think the video tapped into a little but not enough of the CLASSISM that impacted Steve there. Like yes, they had a major income disparity, but there’s no rich man that Steve would have felt inclined to accept a suit from either.
    I can give an example: we mentioned Aiden earlier that he bought Carrie’s apartment and we know from the series he’s a craftsman or furniturist or whatever the term is, and he clearly does well enough for himself that he can afford NYC cost of living AND afford buying that apartment. We also know from the series that there’s at least a hint that Steve and Aidan hang out and are friends (we don’t quite know how close, of course). Even if they became very close friends, I strongly contend Steve would never accept money or be gifted a suit from Aiden. And while I know there’s differences between friends and partners, I think classism gave Steve a chip from accepting any sort of gift or “handout” from anybody, even if it is clearly to his benefit, and PRIDEFUL to do anything desperate to do it all himself. And don’t get me wrong, DITCHING her and RETURNING it is absolutely disgraceful and definitely falls under wounded puppy ego BS. I just think HIS feelings about money played more or equal part in his actions as opposed to the fact it was Miranda buying it for him (and he certainly didn’t have a problem with her buying the house in Brooklyn to my knowledge, buy if he did in the episode im happy to stand corrected).
    Now BERGER? ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND PERCENT AGREE!!!!
    just my thoughts….

    Ehhh, I'd argue that Charlotte quitting her job was silly from a personal fulfillment/career perspective, but not a financial one. She was rich before she married Trey, and it WASN'T because gallery work pays well. She had "old money" family money.
    Also, idk...the Vogue line didn't give me diet culture vibes, it gave me "starving student" vibes. Like, sometimes people really are broke, and really do choose to be physically uncomfortable to pursue something they love. See also, living in a crummy place rather than "sell out."

    I truly believe that Berger didn't feel insecure because "a woman "was earning more than him or being more successfull than him but he felt insecure because Carrie was his peer. Imagine seeing your partner, who's literally doing the same job as you, receive the accolades, money and validation that's you've always been dreaming of. It would be extremely hard to handle, especially if you're the artistic/creative field. I'm a proud Berger apologist, there, I've said it

    I LOVE the show Sex and the City and I'm glad to hear you're re-watching it. My sister gives me so much crap every time the topic of the show comes up in conversation, even when its not me. Was it problematic? Yes, hindsight is 20/20. There are so many people ready and waiting to jump down my throat on how "delusional" Carrie is, how unrealistic her lifestyle is, blah blah blah. They feel superior as they're pointing out all the reasons why Sex and the City is wrong in so many ways. I'm not saying any of those reasons are wrong. But NO ONE has ever asked me why I love the show so much. These are four adult women who are friends for life. They have fights, they have differences of opinions, they go through periods of strife with each other, and they make decisions that others in the group disagree with. They have moments of true authentic intimacy with each other, moments that only are achievable with a true friend. Through it all they know that no matter what, they still have a solid core group of girlfriends. They can be themselves with each other without risking the friendships. (I'm talking about the SHOW, not the beef between SJP and Kim Cattrall.) That type of group, those types of girlfriends is something I've never had. That's why I love the show. Friendship.

    • @Melanie-t5t
      @Melanie-t5t 2 месяца назад +1

      I can understand your train of thought. I also wish I had real friends that I could always go to. But in this context, I have to say: Carrie would be so out. She's a horrible person, her decisions are awful and the way she guilt traps others, I would never want her in my life.
      You have to remember that it's a show. Everything is made up. Even this super duper friendship only exists on paper. In real life, nobody likes a friend like that.

    • @peggysue4521
      @peggysue4521 Месяц назад

      @@Melanie-t5t I understand that it's TV/Hollywood and not realistic. But then why do we watch rom-coms? They are even making a comeback (no complaints here). They've been popular for decades, Hallmark is known for them. We watch them because they allow us to feel emotions that we don't feel in everyday life. Does the guy always get the girl or vice versa in real life? Of course not. But that's not why we watch them. We watch them for the warm fuzzies we feel when, at the end, everything works out. That's why I love Sex and the City, the depiction of unshakable friendship allows me to feel something that I may never feel in real life. If people are going to come down hard on Sex and the City due to how unrealistic it is but stops there, that's hypocritical. This is all my opinion, of course.

Carrie was right to point out that Charlotte got everything from a divorce settlement, she's far from being independent and responsible herself.
