The whole entire speaking in the original HALO 2 was poorly animated, but didn't care at the time game was amazing, the anniversary was amazing for me and i play HALO 2 nonstop now
I like the spore mist/bloom effect of this more, but literally everything else, from gravemind's sound effects, to amped up ambient music and other sound effects, the gnarly multiple layers of teeth and rotting blood, the sheer size scale, the utterly terrifying tentacles, the anniversary version is better bar none. It only missed out on the bloom of spores.
2:45 Arbiter stops struggling and looks at Gravemind with great intent for a couple seconds before lowering his head in contemplation. This may have been a mistake by the original animators, but I think it was absolutely intentional. It is absent from the anniversary version of the cutscene, which is unfortunate because it is a brilliant way to tell the player that Arbiter is thinking about his decisions and actions without spelling it out directly.
yeah definitely intentional. i can think of a few moments in the campaign where the camera holds on the arbiter as he's noticing or reacting to something & yeah his face isn't animated (bc what would elite facial expressions look like) but his body language & often the tilt of his head are used to convey what he's thinking & feeling. really well done. halo 2 endearing us to the elites was the highlight of the franchise for me
He does the same once asking 343 in the control room about the true nature of the Halo arrays. Very intentional here too, there's only so many ways to emote an Elite.
Yeah, the new cutscene by Blur isn't that great. If you can get past the vintage graphics, the cinematography of the older cutscenes are far better in my opinion.
Tarantula The SandWing I mean the gravemind has the memories of all the other gravminds maybe it remembered to mimic a child’s voice to intimidate arby?
Well, the gravemind currently is literally a mass convergence of all the races it’s assimilated. So pretty much it’s talking through all the biomass it’s merged together
I felt one of the (few) mistakes Anniversary made was changing the close up on the Arbiter during the 'all will perish as they did before' scene. That moment of doubt in Arbiter's eyes was a key moment in the character's progression.
The thing I'll always remember watching this as a kid was the tone and movements when he says "Knew what they wrought". I just loved that line, and it always looked so cool to me.
it's still insane how this was even possible back then in 2004. Like it still blows my mind how great the xbox was at processing intense scenes like this.

@Joker Ministry bias is a good guy now after his meditation he’s have moved the halo so you could drive and he slipspaced you to the didactic shield world cause infinity needed chief to escape the world
I am partial to the new Gravemind’s mouth design. He has the outermost row of teeth around the edges of his giant maw, the main set of teeth set in the center, then if you look closely you can see yet another much more animated mouth moving inside of that mouth to form the words. Truly amazing animation.
The way how the prophets body is mostly dissolved into the gravemind, to the point where hes just a head and an arm sticking out of the tenticle with vein things from the tenticle penetrating his skull into his brain, its disgusting and sends a chill down my spine when you think about how hes been living like that for a while. Okay im glad im not the only one who noticed that the arbiter actually finally listened at the "All will perish as they did before" part, anniversary didnt do a closeup on the arbiter and I dont know why.
The remake is missing the music cue in the line 'you will seach one likely spot, and you will search another', which is pretty unforgivable, if you ask me.
@@evil1143 That's idiotic. Music can make or break a scene. The beautiful music in the Halo series is absolutely central to the epic feel of the story, as demonstrated in this case.

I've always preferred this version more then the anniversary. Without the mouth, I always assumed that the Gravemind was telepathically speaking which is why he heard Cortana even though she's in Chief's head at the time with is further supported by how it talks to you in Halo 3. The mouth kind of ruins that.

The anniversary version obviously looks better, but I like the look of this gravemind and wish the updated version kept a little closer to the weird green flytrap we have here.
It looks like a giant venus trap because this gravemind was not even properly modeled (look at the amount of texture errors it has inside the mouth), this was not what bungie wanted to do just look in the conceptual arts
compared to H2A, i prefer this one... the scene is darker, more misty, and there's a slight difference in the voice that makes it sound scarier as it should be.
I heard people didn't react well to the appearance of the gravemind in halo 2, which is probably why it doesn't show up in halo 3. It's so weird because the gravemind looks amazing in halo 2 anniversary so it retroactively seems weird that it wasn't shown in 3
I love it when an infectious zombie plague has plant like themes, but I feel like the Anniversary Gravemind is the ultimate realization of what they were trying to portray.
While visually, yes, the anniversary model is the original intent full realized I can't help but feel that less is more in this regard. Like the atmosphere here is a bit thicker than in anniversary due to the darker lighting at the fact we never truly see how Arby and Chief ended up in this exact location. It all lends into Cortana's opening question "what is that?" Like seriously, oh good god what is that thing???!!
Huh…So this is the creature that SCP-682 was inspired by. Or At least the voice actor of the character from the Analogue horror “SCP Sedition Series” stated that he was inspired by the Gravemind in this game.
new one looks like a giant prophet with its head blasted off, this one had more personality as it was harder to make out what each part is just the way the flood is. Also if you ever seen any animation with any non human talking without exactly having the mouth parts to speak with will go with this kind of animation. You see it done in giant anime titles like princess monoke with the wolves, but they compensated with the new one and gave it a cute mouth with teeth so people can read out the big words it spoke despite missing the point of it literally vocalizing through assimilation not because it had a big mouth to begin with to speak with us the entire time when it's obviously holds up the prophet and the oracle, doesn't feel as alien anymore but just another organism that you see everywhere in halo and you would think needs to eat regularly to survive and is stuck there ultimately, so especially considering how colorful the biology the stuff halo had just making it have red fleshy bits is pretty typical and branched away from the fungal aspect that predates the lastofus and gave into more generic zombie territory that some how left with less detail than it came in with.
I just came here from a video of the anniversary edition's cutscene lol Never played Halo, and obviously the anniversary one is superior is basically every way. Seems they used the same voice actors both times though. Maybe even the same recordings?
It might be some of the way shots are framed and the lighting darker, but I feel like I prefer the older design. The New gravemind at times feels more like it's a separate worm-like entity, tendrils clean and out of the way, while the old design feels like it's really the entire room itself, a forest of tendrils and flesh, and the mouth being but a small part. That and while this one animates weirdly, I really like that plant/fungal like aesthetic the original version had. Now, does the new version better convey what the gravemind is? To some extent, yes. But part of that is the higher res graphics the remaster had to work with.
This one is so much better than the Anniversary Gravemind. It actually looks like it's a part of the Flood; 343's take is too bloody and the teeth just don't work. It really goes to show that 343 just never has and cannot understand what Bungie was going for.
LOL after all this time, i just noticed the Arbiter's mouth was all wonky when it cuts to him after the "those who built this place" line. it's like it was wandering around and forgot it had a scene coming up.
In terms of design and general feel, I much prefer this. It sticks better with the overall design of the flood. The flood biomass has that sickly green color, which is switched out for blood red in the new, which is just a baffling decision. This fungal-plant thing fits better with what you'd expect of a late stage flood creature rather than the fleshy styling of the new one. The spore filled mist coming from its mouth is also a great touch that was dropped in the new one. The lighting is also darker to fit more with the underground cave feel to the location. There was also a strong implication of telepathic communication of some sort since it seemed to respond to Cortana's statement, so the focus on trying to give it an actual working mouth rather the using the classic design seemed silly to me. Then, there are the subtle hints from the Arbiter's movements in response that were lost since the new version focuses more on the gravemind. However, it's definitely not better in every way. The graphical fidelity is obviously vastly higher in the new version, and the movements of the characters are clearly more lifelike compared to the more robotic movements of the less advanced animation.

Second, when I played this, my first thought wasn’t the Little Shop of Horrors, which I had seen at that point. It was, “OH HECK THAT THING IS HUGE!
