I'm not one of those fanatics who think Steve Reich is God or the best composer ever. However, some of his works are my favorite music to listen to. "Music for a Large Ensemble" is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music. For the last decade, I'm amazed and thrilled and smitten each and every time I rediscover/relisten to it. Makes me smile; makes me want to dance. I wish to see/hear it performed live one day.
This is Reich's greatest work in my opinion. But criminally ignored & undervalued. Never performed. Only two official recordings. You can't even buy the score from Boosey. Reich himself said as regards this work he "wasn't keen". I have loved it ever since I heard it 35 years ago at age 17. It's the most perfect thing he ever wrote.
Man, if anything, this stuff has taught me what art is. Sure, art is a way to express yourself, and it's free and inalienable and powerful and personal, but that's the obvious part. It's what people who listen to the radio a lot and say "music is my life" say. The cool thing about art is that it's intentional. It's not just about "expressing your feelings", but the art of art is expressing THAT feeling, or showing THAT picture. To some, Steve Reich can sound like chaos. But whatever it is, it's EXACTLY what he wanted it to be. The only thing you can do is listen. not just listen but LISTEN. Close your eyes and hear what Reich is saying, hear what he felt while he wrote, hear his state of being as documented in this musical snapshot. If you don't observe art and lust to uncover the the artist given meaning, I think you should try it. Maybe it won't sound like white chaos anymore and you can stop leaving negative comments about art where they don't really have right to exist by definition.
Thank you for sharing this peice of music. When I heard it over 30 years ago,it sparked an interest in not only Steve reich but a whole new level of musical enjoyment to this day.
WOWW BLOWN AWAY BY THIS believe it or not its my first encounter with Steve Reich just discovered him half an hour ago and im in love with this so hypnotizing and beautiful! THANK YOU MANGOTT
WHAT? Why only 4,080 views? How the hell could something this brilliant and perfect be so vastly overlooked in the arena that youtube offers? This has been one of my absolute favourite pieces of music for over 20 years now, since my friend introduced me to it. I leave it on loop, playing while I sleep. I have it on the headphones at the gym. I listen to it at the beach. At work. On the bus, on planes, in cafes, wherever, whatever. And it ALWAYS makes me feel good. Fucking genius song.
I discovered this piece more than 30 years ago, there i was 15 , it changed my musical world, together with his "Desert Music" and his "Music for mallett instruments, voices and organ" it belongs to my favorites - especially in this original recording with Steve at the piano ... :)
I have only just been introduced to Mr Reich.. and I can honestly say the man is a musical genuis. Anyone with a taste in creative music will understand the love for his music :THUMBS UP FOR CREATIVENESS!!
I just love this and if I have it running, not quite as background, but I'm working away and I get through my workload so much better. Such feel-good music!
wow. first listen. this is my favorite piece of music i've heard upon first listen. not surprising, because i love polyrhythms and catchy melodies. just never heard them in so raw and timbrally complex a setting. this piece makes a lot of sense to me.
reich himself doesnt regard this piece much. maybe it hasnt such brilliant construction like other pieces from him but for me it is his most joyful piece. always fill me with optimism. and that's something i love about him so much. something very natural and fundamental is in his music
been waiting for someone to put the full version on. You're a lifesaver...first heard this 23 yrs ago...and not heard the full version since. its like refinding an old dear friend. thank you!
This music is not for everyone. Those who are in tune and can hear a progression of music that provokes imagination - welcome to music enlightment. Those that hear only monotony - it's time to get out of yourself. Try smoking some pot and listening to it. If that doesnt work try drinking abit first. If that doesnt work try driving fast on a lone country road while listening loudly - not inclusive of my earlier suggestions please! Still doesn't work? You have some work to do!
Or maybe just move on to music you do appreciate--there's no need to like everything, and certainly no need to look down on those who do not like what you do.
smacl61 This music isn't for everyone. I think perhaps you should have stopped there. Implying that someone needs a mind-altering substance, including road hypnosis, to "gate" this music in past some kind of resistance is a pretty good sign.
Preach brother! Totally agree with you, I mean the talent required to put together something that's this busy but so smooth and calm at the same time is astonishing alone, trying to get your head around the polyrhythms is fun as it is, that aside it's just a great piece to listen and relax to. Mr. Reich is indeed a genius.
This is so lovely - especially the last part, from 11:42 until the end. One of my favourites, among so many others. To me, Reich is the greatest composer alive.
Thank you so much for the comment! Although I don't think Steve Reigh is God, I sense much that he writes comes from God, and I have the same reaction you have; I feel complete, revived. I always wonder if Steve Reigh realizes how overwhelmingly powerful this work comes across to others. I think he must, I can only speak for myself: it tunes me into the universe and gets deeper and deeper as it progresses....
~5 to 5.5 minutes behind the 54 minute full version of Gate to the Minds Eye. is a great fit. After about 7 minutes into the Gate to the Mind's eye, the match is scary good (I cannot fault Dolby here, but, Music for a Large Ensemble, Full version is incredible good, too.
Thank you so much for listening, viewing and making the comment. I had the same sensation you had when I heard this piece for the first time, Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Song, in English, anyway, means it has a vocal, almost always with text, not wordless. Songs are sungs, 'pieces' played. There is a difference. 'Pieces' in classical-speak, are what in Pop-speak are called 'instrumentals.'
+AuctorMemoriae Funny you should mention that - I purchased this album on a beautiful Spring afternoon (1981?) and this incredible music washed over me along with the breezes and scents of that day. I never tire of hearing it.
While much about this piece is very attractive and vibrant it raises several important questions about what music is supposed to do as it travels through time. First of all it violates the three-minute rule which says that after three minutes you need to do something a little bit different. This piece is 15 minutes of the same relentless rhythm and texture. Does music, like people, have to evolve from start to finish? One of the events that is missing here is the dramatic moment when the beginning returns in an altered condition.
contact the record co that holds the rights. with something like this it may be difficult unless your production is on the larger side. there are services that do it for you.
It is a song. Don't you hear the melodies and differiating rhythms? That is what makes a song a song. I mean: Checkout the definition for music and you will think different.
i believe this piece is less elaborate than his other works. he is probably not satisfied with the progression here on which is his music is based on. but still this is beautiful piece
Actually amerattila is correct, though too nit-picky about it. This is a piece of music, not a song. The difference is that a song has lyrics while a piece is purely instrumental. And this really is a beautiful piece of music, but it is technically a piece and not a song.
This music breathes
I discovered Steve Reich and this piece in my late teens. It stirred something deep in my soul then and still does. Powerfull and timeless.

its a fucking master piece ! i cant understand either why steve reich is not more popular.
Merci pour ce moment grandiose. Merci, merci, merci...
love how this just "starts"

The climax of this piece can only be described by one word... LARGE!
I can hear elements of Music For 18 Musicians all over this... which is totally not a bad thing at all. loving this

Very well said!
Art is subjective. By definition this was an atrocity to all mankind. I am now slumbering into a coma because of it.
Couldn't agree more with you Keysick.
***** Yes, it absolutely is.
Gavin Hoey Thank you for proving my point that art is subjective!

Maybe the world just needed a great percussion-born compositor. Thank you for what music sounds like today Steve Reich.
Merci beaucoup pour ton appréciation, de regarder et d'écouter et de faire un commentaire!

Very similar to the beginning of Music for 18 Musicians, 5th section 3B
I just love this and if I have it running, not quite as background, but I'm working away and I get through my workload so much better. Such feel-good music!
Exquisite. When I heard this for the first time about 30 years ago it enriched my life's musical journey beyond measure.

Just had the same experience. Thanks Mangott, this is overflowing with happiness and life.
More beauty cannot be summoned from such a genius! Ravishing, launching one soul to the stars!
20 Hour's later; Fcking amazing.
Like listening to a Jackson Polluck painting
Steve Reich en la música como Tarkovski en el cine me ayudaron a encontrar una nueva percepción del sonido y las imágenes respectivamente.

This and Four Organs have convinced me I need to listen to more of Steve Reich's pieces.
this is incredible!

Hahaha! I love this

dicovered on the worldwide show 20-07-2013, and immediately hypnotized!

Veramente poetico il tuo commento.

For some reason this sounds like springtime to me.

I never tire of hearing it.
thank you
I LOVE YOU MANGOTT FOR MAKING THOSE VIDEOS
ahh i really needed this, thank you :)
Blowing my mind.
thank you steve
This song suits me when I read "Difference & Repetition" by Gilles Deleuze
I love it...

Steve Reich here is inspired by his own Music for 18 Musicians.
Made my life.

Can't believe Reich doesn't like it..I heard them say
Leaves... very appropriate :)

is this the original version on "Steve Reich: Octet, Music for a Large Ensemble, and Violin Phase"
yes, he's as spheric as durutti column, an angelic version of the young gods ...
reminds me of Stephen Warbeck's Proof soundtrack
Steve Reich considers this piece a bottom draw piece!
i believe this piece is less elaborate than his other works. he is probably not satisfied with the progression here on which is his music is based on. but still this is beautiful piece
