Can we take a moment out of the complimenting John and Dani, as deserving as it is, to say 'about damn time that Dan gets his Head Coach job after so many years(all the way back to assistant to Cook at UNL) of helping make some of the best teams in the last +2 decades? Congrats to Coach Dani and to Coach Dan, and enjoy your retirement, Coach Cook.
we love EE
Emily Ehman is personable and knowledgeable, hard combination to beat.
Russ Rose is the greatest volleyball coach ever. Cook is way up there. Rose built PSU. Cook inherited and furthered a winner.
I don't understand how anyone can make comparisons of different time periods of the subject. Rose coached for 43 yrs, most of which was during a time period of Women's volleyball that is unreflective to today's, both in rules and structure as well as in the competitive field of teams. Cook coached for 32 yrs, and over 70% of those were during the current sport, and all through the period of growth in both the sport and the skill parity. There is no Coach with more success in the last 25 yrs, even if you include Rose who was coaching for most of those 25. There is no coach, no matter the era of volleyball, who has produced more Academic All-Americans, and it could be argued that none have done more to elevate the game, measured in attendance, viewership, and development in participation.
The most honest and respectful thing we can say is Russ Rose was the greatest coach in the pre-rally scoring era of Women's NCAA Volleyball, while John Cook was the greatest in the rally scoring era. They just aren't comparable beyond that.
Your analysis is flawed. Russ Rose's greatest period of success was during the rally scoring era--four straight National Championship's and then two back to back a few years later in the rally scoring era. Cook never achieved anything like that. Having said that, Rose was never particularly innovative, and he never cared about international volleyball and never produced any Olympians except in the latter stages of his career. He finally took an interest in the post college careers of his players when his players started making the National Team rosters (circa 2008). Nebraska, and eventually Cook, had that focus much earlier.
@@armandocontreras8884 The problem with your position is that if we just look at the Rally Scoring Era, Cook's record is better than Rose's... and while you can present the 6 Natty's as a serious contention, looking at Championship matches, Rose was 6 out of 6 in the Championship, and twice more making it to the final 4, for a total of 67-16 in the tournament. Comparing that to Cook's 3 out of 7 in the Championship, and 4 times to the final 4, for a total of 87-21 in the tournament. Cook made it to the Championship more times than Rose, passed the Great 8 more times, and had an overall better tournament win%. Rose's record in the Rally Scoring Era is 596-99(.8576 win%), while Cook's is 688-103(.8698 win%). Maybe more important than that is Rose vs Cook in the Rally Scoring Era, 6 W's and 16 L's. Even during the 6 PSU NC seasons, Rose only won 3 out 5 times they played in those seasons, and the 2008 season was decided by a 5 set match in the final 4. Rose had two superior classes, while Cook had several. Rose was defeated 5 times in the first weekend of the Tournament, compared to Cook's 1 time.
