- Thank you to Juan Serrano who suggested I make this video. This is the history of the Pioneer Chicken restaurant that opened in 1961. There are still 2 left. Here is their brief history.

I remember going to Pioneer Chicken and Pioneer Market in Echo Park in the 80's. Pioneer Chicken was painted in sky blue and white prior to changing to the orange and white colors. You had to order at the window. There was no seating at the time. My family and I would frequent it more than the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Silverlake, a few store fronts just left of where the CVS Pharmacy is at now.
There were 2 in San Francisco back in the 80s. Used to go to the on down on Mission St. after school every day. The location is called El Pollio Supremo now. Miss that chicken with corn on the cob 😢
I vaguely remember going to this place in the 90s at least once, and I thought the chicken was pretty good. I loved the batter
It was around 1983 when I last had Pioneer Chicken…today I saw by accident the one in Bell Flower.. needless to say a tear came outta my eye…tasted just as back in tha day ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for watching
It’s in Bell Gardens
@@thatkidfromsmartsville2012 thanks for the info
@@EricCProductions76 no problem
This was absolutely my favorite chicken growing up. I've never found anything else like it.
The one in Bell is stuck in the 1980s and I love it.
awesome, thanks for sharing that info
Mannnn I remember when i was a kid in long beach ca. there was one off 7th st n junipero. Bring bacc memories. Now i need togo to the last one standing in LA. Best fried chicken ever!!
Thanks for this. I was thinking about Pioneer today so looked it up on RUclips. I used to frequent this place with my grandparents back in the 80s. I LOVED their chicken strips and fries with bbq sauce. I still crave those. No wonder I like Popeyes. I didn’t know they bought out Pioneer. I guess that’s as close as I’ll get to my childhood.
I remember going to Pioneer Chicken before going to Friday church by the beach and I loved the Orange Bangs.
nice, thanks for sharing your memories
Pioneer was so good!
yes they were, thanks for watching
Pioneer was the real deal back in the day in SoCal. So tasty!
Good one.
A two piece meal in So Cal for $1.29? Wow...
can't find that anymore
I grew up on Pioneer Chicken as a kid of the 80s. There was one around the corner from my old spot on Vermont & Florence in the shopping center near what used to be Super Buy (before it became "El Super"). They've long since torn down the place. Then a few years ago as I was traveling by bus, I happened to spot the one that used to be on Olympic & Fairfax, and gave them a try for old times' sake. Well worth the money too...except it got turned into a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (which also went out of business here in Los Angeles). So now that means I have to hit up the one in Bell Gardens off Florence & Garfield for that nostalgic yard bird 🥴
Thanks for sharing those memories and thanks for watching
My second job after the Treasury. Worked at the one in Reseda CA.on the corner of Roscoe and Reseda. Glad to know there are two still around.
thanks for watching
Las Vegas Nevada Had 3 Pioneer Chicken
Locations One On West Charleston Blvd And
The Other On East Charleston Blvd And then On
East Tropicana Ave At Mountain Vista Dr.
Remember? There's still a few Pioneer restaurants around, mang.
There is one Pioneer Chicken left, that I'm aware of in Bell Gardens, CA. Last time I was there was years ago and it was AMAZING.! That beautiful orange, delicious batter, took me back to the eighties, but again that was years ago. I went back to Pioneer Chicken 2 days ago. Sadly, John who ran the place retired and with him went the recipe. No more orange delicious batter. The chicken was good, but it wasn't 1980s good. I would still go back to Pioneer because, the chicken is indeed good. I do miss the orange and the crunch. Also, I typically order the chicken livers, unfortunately they were out. I'm hoping they continue to carry the batter fried livers, wish they could recreat the original batter, tho.
thanks for sharing your memories
There's also another Pioneer on Whittier & Soto on the Eastside
They need to bring this chicken back yes good taste❤❤❤❤
When you think about Jollibee cooked this exact same look as Pioneer Chicken. The original location was in the 80s DeBarge hit Rhythm of the night music video
2 in Sacramento CA back in 1990. Best Spicy FC at the time.
Bring it back!!!!!!
I agree
Bring back Pup N Taco as well. Best chili cheese dogs around.
@@lamontbradford4630 yessssss. I loved them too. They had the best fries and beef burritos and slushy 😋
Have you done a video about Chicken Delight?
Thanks for the suggestion, I will put it on my list.
Yup the first was in Echo Park the man on the wagon with the big mustache is Leonard Lim owner of Pioneer Market he bought the recipe from Al Langer of langers Deli on 7th and Alvarado my first trip to pioneer a chicken basket was sixty nine cents they also sold pastrami dip BBQ Beef dip pork and beef ribs

I just ate this for dinner last night
I remember when Pioneer Chicken MNF special was 99 cents

Crenshaw and Imperial
There was one in San Jose. The chicken was pretty good.
I remember the one in Long Beach 10th and LB Blvd and in Burbank, CA. 😋
I still eat there
Pioneer Chicken, Pup N Taco, and Loves Barbeque. I had a good childhood.
Sounds like you did, I did all of those restaurant histories. Thanks.
@@EricCProductions76 I have watched some of your videos, and all I can say is they are educational and fun. They bring back memories for some people and educate other people on once-popular companies.
@@frankm7254 thanks Frank. What really interests me is the story how the company started. Everyone has to start somewhere and it is always refreshing to hear that many started with nothing and grew it into a highly successful company at one point. Can't really say they ended well but it is a good story altogether.
The breading is good sweet
thanks for watching
Best chicken ever. The tv ads were awful but the food was good.
thanks for watching.
CFC still exist now in Indonesia, though not so many but if you go the toll way and rest area, you still found one
thank you for the information
I loved there chicken sandwich called a chicken little.
thanks for watching
I went to the one on sunset Blvd Hollywood
that's awesome. I never went to one before.
Pioneer was my fav! Went to the Sepulveda Blvd and Saticoy Ave location in Van Nuys all the time.
thanks for sharing that memory.
Great video. I used to eat at the Pioneer Chicken in Escondido, CA all the time. It was the best of all of the fried chicken chains. The batter they used for the chicken was fantastic and the chicken was always crispy. While I miss their delicious chicken, I've consoled myself with just as good equivalents at Gus' Fried Chicken in Burbank and Honey's Kettle in Culver City.
Is there >ANYTHING< stopping the current owners from expanding and opening up another location, elsewhere in the State? We used to have one, up here in S.F., and I often chose it over KFC, whenever my folks didn't feel like cooking and had a craving for fried chicken. Pioneer Chicken was our go-to for the longest time, until they completely closed up... then Popeye's opened a location about a block away. I miss Pioneer so bad, it ain't fair!
I don't think so.
Wish I had the recipe
Yummy
As a kid my family used to go to the one in the city of Orange Ca.
They did put some kind of orange dye on the chicken.
Kinda like Yoshinoya. I lived in Yorba Linda as a kid. Thanks for watching.
Oh wow, I remember eating there at the Orange County location.
I love seeing all your videos, seeing the old commercials and walking down memory lane. 👏🏻
Just had it yesterday there’s one in east la and in bell gardens it’s sooo good it’s honestly the best chicken and potato’s and cod I ever had omg
that's awesome
Dude THANK YOU. Going for some Pioneer chicken now!
An interesting fact; I worked in Pico Rivera in the early 2000's and drove past a restaurant called "THE Pioneer Chicken and Biscuits." They had items from both Pioneer Chicken AND Popeyes. Instead of fish they had shrimp. Spicy rice from Pioneer, biscuits and mashed potatoes from Popeyes. Chicken was from Pioneer, but spicy chicken was from Popeyes. I didn't go more than once, preferring to drive a little farther to eat at Pioneer in Bell Gardens. Food was good though. They even had a commercial on local cable. No insignia from either restaurant. Sign and decor were pretty unmemorable. Within a few years it was gone. No one from Pioneer knew about "THE Pioneer."
Yes you are correct, Pioneer Chicken had been brought to Indonesia as California Fried Chicken (CFC). I still remember when I was a kid in around 1989, they had a branch in Plaza Palaguna here in Bandung, but now the building had been demolished. I love the chicken nuggets at that time accompanied with tomato ketchup. Currently CFC still has many branches throughout Indonesia, but I feel that the taste is slightly changing.
i remember the restaurant in Turlock ca
thanks for watching and for subscribing
Your videos bring back all of my childhood memories THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU I have a suggestion for you how about another California classic Chris and Pitts
Thank you for watching. I will put it on my list. Thanks.

Any more of these left? All the ones here in Hawaii are long gone.
Not sure.
I used to have this around my 80's kid time, I was in Bandung anyway... cruncy chicken skin and melt meat white chicken.. OMG that was amazing taste
I go to the one on van nuys Blvd
Never forget the Gizzards and Livers, doesn't a chicken have two breasts, no three? Pioneer Pete on television, how cool.
Have you ever been to Pioneer Chicken was it good¿🍗
I never went there but it must have been good if there were so many of them,
I've just recently been watching your posts. Great stuff. I don't think I remember you being "greasy as hell" snarky. lol! Cracked me up. Love your videos.
Please do one of Love's Wood Pit BBQ! 🍻
I will put it on my list. Thanks for watching.
They still have one in bell gardens, ca. Pioneer chicken needs to be renovated.
@@legendaryTMNICO thanks for the heads up. At least we know we can still go there.
My uncle managed a few of them in Sacramento in the 80s
Thanks for sharing that cool memory.
If your uncle is still around, does he still remember the recipe(s)? I'm not asking for them, explicitly nor implicitly, but just curious, is all.
Dear God, I miss you Pioneer Chicken! Pioneer Chicken was the best, biggest, juiciest, tastiest fast food chicken, period! KFC, Church’s and that dry awful Popeye’s!! Pff!
I couldn’t hear the commercial.
I listened to the opening commercial, there was sound on my end.
My dad owned one of those restaurants in Temple City, CA. it explains why it became a Popeye's.
thanks for sharing that memory
By any chance, do you know how to get the recipe to do it because I live in Modesto California and I only know they only have one in Los Angeles so far that’s still there and apparently that will be like almost 6 hours away from me
there are a number of recipes online that try to emulate their recipe. You should check out those knock off recipes
FWIU since this video was made, ownership of the 2 remaining locations has passed to the next generation of the family that had the franchise. They've obtained full rights to the brand and want to revive it with an emphasis on its' LA origins.
thanks for the information
I remember them. Food is good..
The one in Long Beach, CA got converted to Popeyes a long time ago.
thanks for sharing that info.
Do you remember Flooky's?
No, but I will look into it. Thanks for your suggestion.

It was disgusting 🤮
Their spice rice was the bomb! Also OJ Simpson owned some franchises here in California.
The real pioneer chicken was located on 6th and Alvarado owned by Al Langer of Langer's Deli when Langer closed the chicken coop the owner of Pioneer Market on sunset and echo park bought the recipe from Mr Langer and opened the first pioneer chicken Mr Lim had s huge handle bar moustache the guy on the covered wagon
Pioneer Pete sure looks Italian. What's up with that?!
