  • Josef Rheinberger’s beautiful “Kyrie” from the Mass in Eb Opus 109, ‘Cantus Missae’ is sung by The Central Washington University Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director)
ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Born in Liechtenstein, Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901) wrote prolifically not just for organ, but chorus, piano, and orchestra as well. This Mass for 8 voices is one of over 100 choral works, which include Motets, a Requiem, and other Masses for Mixed and SSA voicings.
ABOUT THE CHOIR: The CWU Chamber Choir The CWU Chamber Choir is well-known throughout the Northwest, having appeared at two WMEA state conferences, the 2010, 2016, and 2020 NWACDA conferences, and the 2011 NWMENC conference.
In 2015, the choir undertook a 10-day tour of Spain, the result of an invitation to compete in the Tolosa International Choral Competition. They also sang six concerts to enthusiastic crowds, including one for an audience of some 2,000 people in the storied Santa María de León Cathedral, also called the House of Light, in León. Other concerts in Pamplona, Ordizia, Tafalla and Tolosa were equally well-received.
Chamber Choir also “performs” throughout the world on over 30 multi-camera RUclips videos, which have been viewed more than four and one-half million times as of January 2020. All are under the baton of Dr. Gary A. Weidenaar, who has been the director of the choir since 2006.
The above accomplishments underline the philosophy of the choir-which is that success is a natural by-product of diligent work. Consistent attention to the basics of singing, musicianship, and group dynamics are emphasized. Individual accountability along with individual responsibility are high priorities.
The choir has worked closely with composers Vijay Singh, John Muehleisen and Ola Gjeilo. The CWU Chamber Choir also has also recorded videos of music by Byrd, Gretchaninoff, Monteverdi, Muehleisen, Singh, Victoria, and Rautavaara.
