If we're comparing gangster and mafia movies , it should be Goodfellas versus Casino and Scarface versus Carlitos Way . Casino is basically Goodfellas Part Two and Carlitos Way is basically Scarface Part Two with different characters .
Goodfellas and Scarface (1983) are both masterpieces at the end of the day. And if you haven't seen the original Scarface from 1932 directed by Howard Hawks and starring Paul Muni, I highly recommend it, it's also a masterpiece and a pioneer of the Gangster genre. I also recommend The Public Enemy (1931) starring the great James Cagney and Little Caesar (1931) starring the great Edward G. Robinson. These 3 films catapulted the Gangster genre in the history of cinema and were the inspirations for Martin Scorsese, and they're must sees for any movie fan.
@azohundred1353 I watched the original Scarface last week and it was amazing! It's considerably shorter too, which now makes Scarface (1983) a little fat on the edges, but I still love it . I'm going to watch those other two movies you recommended.
I watched Goodfellas, and I really wasn't interested to watch ever again. Scarface has so much going for it as a cool movie to watch. Al Pacino might be the sole most notorious man actor of the film, but he's just too badass. The lines are memorable. I've seen it many times. I don't understand why would people prefer Goodfellas over it. I think that if they give you just one video tape of the two to watch, people would take Scarface. I'm sure Scarface shirts definitely sold a lot more. I would watch Goodfellas again, just to compare. But for me Scarface is just magical.
Fun Fact: Animaniacs got influenced of Goodfellas creating the Goodfeathers also Scarface got influenced by the creators of Grand Theft Auto to make a new sequel Vice City. That’s how classic mafia movies can be influenced years later.
I’m taking goodfellas for sure. I love Scarface but Goodfellas is fantastic. That’s what I love about Scorsese. He can make a film with a runtime of 2.5 hours to 3 hours and it feels like it’s 90 mins.
@@AGoat1971 It's one of those really iconic 80s' movies, but it's definitely no 'masterpiece' like Goodfellas ... It's way too cheeseball to even be considered in the same league. ... and I love the cheese.
Scarface is a kick ass movie, but Goodfellas is on a whole different level of greatness. The only reason to compare them is they're both gangster films.
Goodfellas is clearly the superior film. Each category is close but most of them should be going to Goodfellas. I guess they need to make them seem closer for clickbait
Can’t go wrong with either but Scarface for me because I love the 1980s Miami aesthetic and having such fond memories of watching it for the first time.
Goodfellas is for grown men and Scarface is for 13-year-old boys, but given that I'm a 36-year-old man trapped in a 13-year-old's body...I can appreciate both.
I gotta say that it's very hard to compare the two. One is your traditional Scorsese great gangster movie. Then we have a classic, tragic rise to fame of a Cuban refugee who makes his rise and is involved in big-time players of the Cartel, who actually provided all cocaine when cocaine was at it's highest, in the early 80s and the 80s in general. Both movies are powerful. I really like both for different reasons. However I have always favored Scarface. It was a remake in the name only as I could see. With a script written by the always incredible Oliver Stone, and directed by Brian DePalma, I mean the rise of Tony Montana in the first half was excellent. But the descent in the second half was so powerful. This was Tony's story, this wasn't a bunch of guys' story. Yes Pacino was surrounded by talent, but he was the man. And that ending starts with him "Not killing no fucking kids!". He blows out the guy's brains, and he's high AF so he's still mouthing off to him, long after he kills him. This shows how far gone Tony has gotten on this drug. Next that guy lives and gives his speech that could take down Sousa and his empire, including Tony's. Who had to get into that situation do to an FBI sting, as he was caught washing money. And from there it's just so devastating, at one point near the ending shootout, Tony collapses in his chair, as he thinks back to his best friend Manny, who he earlier killed in cold blood, now had he not been so messed up in the head, maybe Manny would have still been by his side, and he sobs wondering to himself" How the fuck could he do that!? ". Scarface is Pacino's magnum opus by far, yes he's been in some great classics, great movies, the guy really doesn't do that many garbage movies. Like ever, even if he's a side character. But this was a three hour movie that could have only been done with him as Tony. And the music to the movie, as well as the songs and the club atmosphere, it captures the time of the 80s perfectly, everyone was at the club, everyone was doing the party drug, cocaine, it was every where. And Tony's story at that time had probably been written a thousand times over. And Good Fellas is a classic American organized crime movie. It's perfect. I can't really say much more about it. It was also a story about a few decades, up to the late 80s early 90s. Scarface was one capsule of time, and for it's three hour runtime, it passes incredibly fast as there is always something going on, happening, and Tony left much more of an impact on me. Sorry I just gotta disagree, even though your statistics are correct. As if this movie had come out maybe a bit later, I'm can guarantee Pacino, Ppfiefer, Bauer, Loggia, may have all been up for Oscars for main and side characters, maybe even Mastrantonio. But Pacino, no doubt in my mind, should have definitely. I can see how massively underrated this movie was when it did come out. It was very dark, violent, and gritty at times. It was a movie that made me laugh, cry, upsetting, tragic, some comedy, a movie that made you feel every emotion you could. Ntm it felt gritty, especially the beginning of the film, it made you feel dirty and sweaty, and it was nearly rated X. So there was much controversy around the film before it came out, so it wasn't very fair to begin. But, the are two different, very different types of gangster films. I think Good Fellas vs Casino or maybe Once Upon a Time in America is a more formidable opponent. Scarface is unlike anyt typical American Gangster film period. I'm don't tt h in nk these movies should have been compared to each other at all.
I prefer Scarface because Tony went down in a tray of bullets, whilst Henry snitched his way out. Tony led himself to The American Dream whilst Henry was a follower, wanting to fit into a surrogate family.

Agree on almost all of the points, but just on the final scene alone Scarface should've won on the violence. That would've put it ahead of Goodfellas in the final tally. It's hard for me to put one ahead of the other though. Depends on my mood on which I'd rather watch. Also, could've considered music. That would've gone to Scarface and made it a draw.

I like Goodfellas cuz I'm a moviephile, I like scarface cuz I'm black
Thanks for coming to the same conclusion as mine 🙂
Scarface is good but Goodfellas is a masterpiece consider to be the best Mob movie of all time so Goodfellas no question
Scarface is more edgy
