This Mazda saved our live in a really bad accident, it’s so reliable and the 2020 and 2021’s air bag and safety features is amazing. When we had an accident Mazda’s huge air bag wrap around inside the car and if the glass get destroyed they made sure it’s not going inside. Really safe and reliable
The RAV4 is no doubt a great buy, but for me, I'll take the CX-5 any day of the week. I really dig the elegant design of Mazda's current models, very appealing!
@@solomons5669 my mazda 3 still going for more than 100k miles... but there were some hickups with the mexican built version I claimed warranty on water pump and the catalytic converter went out on me and needed to be replaced. But i replaced both around 75k miles right before warranty let up. probably because I left my car idle a lot and was car camping while driving saving on hotel bills through the night. did some light road trips as well as van life on some trips. one way to beat up their warranty estimates is by forcing the car to work a bit more than the warranty thinks before expiring and requiring you to repair them. That will force them to over engineer to be past the warranty period. XD I should be good for another 100k miles now with those things replaced. I'm going to replace the transmission oil and break fluid too later when I get the chance.
@@solomons5669 I seriously doubt that the north american made rav4 would last longer than made in japan cx5. I wouldn't touch rav4 with a 10 foot pole.
Being a Mazda owner myself I really enjoy driving the CX5. Love all the features in it specially when driving in sport mode. I really recommend a Mazda if you haven’t yet driven one.
Just bought the 2021 GT Reserve that comes with the turbo engine, silly high torque, and AWD. This thing is fun to drive-to the point where I prefer taking curvier back roads at every opportunity. The chassis is very balanced and I was initially surprised at how well it cornered for its size. It's fast off the line and on the highway, I feel like power is always there and easily accessible. The interior makes me want to stay in the car longer, honestly. It has a more lux fit and finish than all the other compact SUVs I've recently test driven. There's also a good grouping of niceties offered in this trim level that reinforce the lux feel. Exterior design considerations are beautiful (IMO) and the paint is exquisite (machine gray metallic). It apparently has the highest marks in its class in safety and reliability which offers some peace of mind. For me, the only drawbacks were 2nd row legroom and lack of included service and maintenance perks. The RAV-4 along with the CRV, Tiguan, and Forester were all under consideration. The CX-5 was the only one that I felt I wouldn't regret dropping ~37k on, based on what I wanted in my next vehicle.
Just bought a 2021 CX -5 , traded my 2017 Subaru outback, which incidentally I really enjoyed also. I must admit though the CX -5 is an incredible sub compact SUV, it rides like a little sports car , it gives you SUV utility. Mazda really dots the eyes and crosses the t,s on this one. It’s a wonderful vehicle, I just love it so far.
@@pamwarren3367 , Hi there, the outback I had was wonderful on the highway, and it has an enormous amount of storage capacity, it has more storage than the Mazda I just bought the CX five, but if that’s not a huge concern to you, I have to admit the Mazda is more nimble, it has a more compact and seamless feel to it when driving, so it all depends what you prefer, they’re both wonderful vehicles, the outback feels heavier and a little bit more slower, the Mazda is far more nimble and has a more compact feel about it. Again the outback holds more than the Mazda does, but for my purposes the CX five is just fine capacity wise. And is a real pleasure to drive.
@@ericclaeyborn7008 , Thanks Eric, yes you are absolutely correct, I’m not sure what I was thinking when I typed that, I certainly know it’s a compact , not sub compact , but must’ve been thinking otherwise, appreciate the correction, take care....
BTW... using premium fuel in the turbo Mazda is an option, if you want 250 h.p. If you don't mind the 227 h.p, it's perfectly fine to use regular fuel.
I drive 2017 Murano and my wife drives 2019 CX5. I'm over 6 ft but CX5 is big enough. I also do my feel it being underpowered with base engine. All of the safety sensors are not over reactive. The only thing I like better in Murano is the comfy seats....so we take Murano for longer trips...but my wife loves her Mazda...and that's what counts...
I love my 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition w/turbo and AWD. The main reasons I chose it, is because it has NO iStop (i.e. Engine Stop/Start technology), NO CVT/IVT transmission ( it comes w/ a 6 sp. automatic transmission), and has no Cylinder Deactivation because it's a turbo engine. Out the door, it cost me $34,500. That's including the taxes and cost of the license plates. It has plenty of power (228-250 h.p.), and comfort for me and my wife. My 3 teenage granddaughters sit comfortably in the backseat. My sister-in-law sat in the back seat this past week, and said, she didn't feel the bumps from the road in front of her house. On my CX-5, the projected MPG is only 23 city/27 highway, but I'm completely happy about it because it doesn't have iStop, CVT, or Cylinder Deactivation... all destructive technologies, imho. BTW... Consumer Reports projected Mazda as the most reliable vehicle on the road in 2020, knocking Toyota from the #1 spot.
Toyota makes great vehicles and I have owned several. I think Mazdas are more fun to drive and my 2020 CX5 Signature is my all time favorite vehicle. With regular 87 octane, it still puts out 310 ft pounds of torque and it is so impressive to drive. It puts a smile on my face every time I use a merge lane, so quick to get up to speed. I had a 2015 Mazda 3 GT which was a great little car, I agree with the commentators remarks that the CX 5 handles as well as many sedans because I feel my CX5 handles as well as my 2015 Mazda 3. I had a 2012 Honda CRV Touring , loved the features of an SUV, but the CRV I owned had terrible handling characteristics. With my CX5, I have both, SUV features and fun handling.
Agree Toyota front grill starting from 2012 began to look like transformer . Most distinct , Lexus looks the most transformer in design than others . Lexus did not sell well sv
My money went to the CX5 Signature. After 1 year it has been perfect. So funny..I was comming out of the grocery store and a new rav4 was parked next to me and the gentleman said, is that a new CX5? Then he said...my damn wife made me pick this thing.
Thank you for illustrating the colmparisons so well. I have to declare that I’m a Toyota fanboy as I really appreciate Toyota’s honest reputation for long term reliablity but conservative comfort. Also I haven’t driven either of these. From learning from the video alone, the Mazda seems to be more expensive to run but more fun and quieter to drive. Depending upon whether it is to be used more on long distance driving the quieter ride may be more heavily weighted in its favour. Also note that any sound measurement in decibels isn’t a linear i.e. the Toyota’s extra noise level is louder than the extra decibels might have you believe. I’m not sure how many owners keep their vehicles long term anymore but I’d like to bet that the natually aspired Toyota engine would outlast the turbo charged Mazda’s. If I was buying to keep the vehicle for say, 12 years or high mileage, (400,000 miles) or rough terrain I’d choose the Toyota. However if money, boot space or rough terrain isn’t a prime consideration I would buy the Maxda simply for the enjoyment of driving.
My wife just got a 2021 Grand Touring and we love it. Didn't get the turbo but it still has plenty of power. They summed it up perfectly when they said if you value driving dynamics get the Mazda, if you just want more space get the Toyota. Nothing wrong with the RAV4 but there's nothing memorable about it either.
If reliable is more important to you choose the Toyota. Turbo engines require more maintenance and if they break down can be more expensive. If you don’t believe me ask a mechanic or just check out Scotty Kilmer.
@@stephenpietrobono9843 Many, like Consumer Reports, now rank Mazda ahead of Toyota in terms of reliability and the turbo engine in the CX-5 (which is also in the CX-9, Mazda3, Mazda6, etc) has not been unreliable at all. If reliability is more important to you then both of these are good options.
@@gerapau066 I hope Mazda is getting better because I do like Mazda. But I think I will listen to mechanics about turbo engine cars before I look at consumer reviews.
Thank you for the video and all the comments. I currently drive a ‘99 Tahoe. These 2 vehicles are on my short list. Great to see the side by side comparison. The Tahoe has such a comfortable ride and it is mechanically sound with only 145k miles but just want something smaller vehicle since most of the time it’s just my husband and I. Many vehicles I had considered were immediately eliminated because the seats were not built to be comfortable on a long trip and many sounded very “tinny” when the doors were closed. I know I can’t expect the Tahoe’s level of comfort in a smaller SUV but seems both these vehicles would be a nice replacement. Thanks again!
I own a 2021 CX-5 Touring preferred package. No regrets. One other thing to mention with the CX-5, is that it uses acoustic glass on it's doors. It is thicker glass and insulated doors for better audio sound.
This will be our 2nd car so back seat and trunk room not so important.I,m asking dealers to find me cx 30 base model Front wheel drive ($1400 more and better gas mileage).
Just bought a CX-5 on June 29th. No regrets. I feel like I got a lot for what I paid. And better steering and driving dynamics than the CR-V and Rav-4 and VW Tiguan.
I own a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature. I love it. I did a lot of research prior to buying it. For the price point it was head and shoulders above anything in it’s class.
Very good video. I've own three Mazda products. Currently own Mazda3 hatchback manual for 7 years, no problems whatsoever have occured with this car. I expect the Mazda CX5 will be the same.
Since the total redesign that happened in 2013-2014, all Mazdas are a generation ahead of their peers. For the hardwork and passion these guys put together to make these marvels, hand over some worthy money to them. I have 5 years of memories with my Mazda6, one of the best decisions I made in life after researching more than 80-90 cars in the approximate budget that I had.
I rewarded Mazda with my money when they gave me a CX-5 that didn't have iStop, CVT, or Cylinder Deactivation. I was thinking... "Finally, a car maker that listens to what the consumer wants, or don't want". Getting the turbo option got rid of the Cylinder Deactivation.
I considered both and finally bought rav4. Cx5 is fun to drive but being a 30k thing, I went for the safer bet. I had 2 Toyotas before and both were cert reliable and had 0 issues.
I love how the Mazda says “hold my beer” when most other CUVs give you a pretty forgettable driving experience. I know, “it’s not a sports car, it’s not supposed to be fast” and all that, but I at least wish most or all manufacturers would give you an option similar to the 2.5T just for the convenience of getting up to speed quick. It makes the car much more practical in maneuvering and if you get on a lot of freeway interchanges like I do, it’s a plus. Go Mazda!
The CX-5 actually deserves an extra .5 points for being quieter. Decibels are logarithmic, therefore the noise level of 57.8 dB in the RAV4 is much more than 5% higher than the 55.2 in the CX-5. For example, if you consider sound intensity of the RAV4 at 4 feet away, the CX-5 would be at 3 feet to hear the same sound intensity as the RAV4.
I have the 2020 Rav4 Hybrid Limited here in Canada. Built in Canada too. Way better gas mileage. No Gas issues as of yet and it doesn't come with the skylight moonroof due to the tooling in Canada. Mazda was pricier here. Canada's top model besides the Rav4 Hybrid Limited is the Rav4 Prime XSE. Mine has Heated and vented seats, Digital Dash not shown on the one you drove. Birds Eye View camera's, More horsepower, handsfree tailgate, Digital rearview camera, Ambient lighting, rain sensing wipers, remote start, Heated rear seats, Safety sense works flawless cause I tested it with pedestrians rear and front, and just love the adaptive cruse control - should be standard on all vehicles. Lastly, Toyota's hold their value! My next purchase will be a Rav4 Prime XSE with the technology package when they arrive later this year. It will also have adaptive headlights too! I personally like the looks of the Rav4 better. Oh, btw I also had a 2018 CRV LX. Loved this vehicle but it had gas in the oil issues which gave higher than normal oil levels and you could smell gas fumes inside the vehicle. I had it repaired at Honda under warranty but the problem continued with no resolve so I got rid of it. I don't trust the turbo's.
You would be lucky to drive 250 miles on one battery charge. I can drive over 500 miles on one tank of fuel. Also, since I drive less than 3,000 miles per year, you probably buy more fuel than I do in a year. And when replacing that battery, I hope you're ready to spend up to $6000 on a new battery when it goes bad, and that's not including the labor costs. Also, a hybrid doesn't handle well on the road.
I finally had the job and the credit to buy a Mazda. Took one for a test drive a few years back. Told my self when I get to the point when I can get one I’m getting one. Love my Mazda CX-5
I’ve bought both of these in the last 2 years. Both special editions. The 2021 CX5 carbon edition wins. I still love the 2018 RAV 4 Adventure tho. My first baby! 😂
I also bought a CX-5 in 2017. So far, zero problems. Routinely get 30mpg with 87 octane fuel on the highway. However, some owners have mentioned chipping of the Crystal Soul Red paint. Mine seems ok.
Had I not insisted on a hybrid, I'd have opted for a CX5. However 42-46 in town and 39 on the highway along with the bells and whistles I like made the Rav XSE a no regret decision for me.

cklim55 I have been going back and forth between these 2 vehicles. I enjoy the CX5 ride and the RAV4 looks and motor and transmission. That is what bothers me about the Mazda. Its skyactiv G engine is direct injection and carbon buildup on the intake valve can be an issue. Also the skyactiv has cylinder deactivation meaning you’re driving a 4 cylinder vehicle but only using 2 which I have read can cause engine problems. In contrast the Toyota has an engine with dual gas injection (direct and port) which will keep the intake vale’s clean from carbon buildup. Also Toyota doesn’t have cylinder deactivation. So it comes down to a choice of a great driving vehicle with possible future engine problems or a rougher driving vehicle with a good engine with very little future problems.
@God_Laughs _At_Atheists You are right about the turbo not having cylinder deactivation. My mechanic friends have told me to avoid turbo engines and stick with NA engines. Less future problems they tell me although it’s harder to find non-turbo engines. The start stop feature on the RAV4 is a real pain and forces me to look at their top trim Limited edition since it doesn’t have that annoying feature. Now I am looking at sedans by Toyota
@@chrisklimek5912 If the turbo isn't abused, there shouldn't be a problem with the turbo for the life of the vehicle. For example, before turning off the engine, the turbo should be allowed to idle for 30 seconds so it can cool down. Also, using a quality synthetic engine oil will fight deposit buildup in the turbocharger.
Had the choice between the two and picked the RAV4 Hybrid because of two things Mazda couldn’t deliver on, cargo volume and fuel efficiency. Rear access is also higher in the Mazda making heavy lifting more difficult as you clear the tailgate. It was a close call between the two.
I'm 64 yrs old and have no problem putting in, or lifting out, cases of drinking water from the CX-5's cargo area. Yesterday, I bought ten 8"x8"x16" cement cinder blocks and had no problems. I'll be buying 42 more cinder blocks. And the wheels on my CX-5 are 19", so most CX-5s have 17" wheels, and for them, it would be even easier to lift cases out.
That’s how it should be, you pick a car on its suitability for your lifestyle, I went the other way because I don’t need a huge load capacity and prefer the comfort, luxurious feel and sophisticated look of the Mazda, I also drove both and the Mazda is a far superior feeling and handling car. The fuel efficiency of the Toyota is its biggest advantage but it’s just not that important to me.
Just got a cx5 signature 2020 with 2k miles on it after trading in my 2016 Tacoma and I’ll never look back. It drives so smooth and sticks the ground I did look at the rav 4 XLE and the Mazda just kept calling me back
Getting a hybrid was important to me so the Rav was the only option and am very happy with it. However, had I not insisted on a hybrid, I'd be driving a CX5.
We ended up going for a Mazda 3 over a Toyota Corolla. We ended up getting a better price with Mazda as Toyota wouldn’t budge on price. The style, drive and feel was a no brained. The only thing Toyota has is the hybrid engine but everything is basic. We will be looking to get a CX5 or RAV4 end of year but I feel we may end up going Mazda again.
@@rammanohar8161 now that I have a Mazda and have had it for a few weeks. I won’t be going to another car brand. I am loving my Mazda 3. It’s a dream to drive. @@Lulu-oi9ue Mazda interior quality is level above it's price. Toyota is selling crap, they living on their past laurels. Love my 2020 CX5 Signature. The craftsmanship of this vehicle is phenomenal. If you didn't know any better you'd think it was a European manufacturer that made it. I say that Mazda has really upped their game. Don't care for the chiseled look of the RAV4. Plus, the CX5 has a real 6 speed transmission.
I see a lot of comments about much better driving experience with Mazda however what about long term reliability and cost of ownership of them. I keep cars for at least 15 years and know Toyotas can easily do that but can find nothing on Mazdas Reliability over same time frame.
One thing to note is the brake hold button on the Mazda . It’s perfect driving in the city with all the stroad roads. Every time I’m at a red light it allows me to take my foot off the brakes !!
I just bought a RAV4 yesterday and it has the brake hold too! I just don’t like that it will only hold for 2 minutes or so then it will force you to shift into park
@@monicashahatit8211 A friend of mine has a Civic and it lasts longer than 2 minutes too, guess it’s some weird Toyota thing. How do you like the Mazda?
RAV4 for me... Toyota just builds incredible cars and the feeling of safety and confidence in the longevity and durability in their products makes it impossible to gof for the Mazda at all
Been a loyal Toyota driver for 35 years. Owned many including 3 RAV4’s. Looking to get a new one and test drove a 2023 cx5 and the differences are significant. The cx5 is better in almost everything except fuel economy and storage amounts. So much smoother and quiet to drive. Noise in my RAV4 has been my biggest complaint. Just put a deposit for a 2024 CX5 carbon edition.
The CX5 should only be compared to small crossovers by BMW, Audi, and Acura. It’s not even fair to put the CX5 against anything by Honda or Toyota. They can’t compare. Not even close. Power, handling, materials, looks, the CX5 is incredible.
I've been binge watching the cx5 videos all 2020. This is still my number one choice of vehicle. Read that there may be a redesign in the works so waiting on that and to get my credit score up before buying. I work for Toyota and we can't keep a Rav on the lot they have out sold the Canty which was the best seller. We get a really decent discount but my heart belongs to Mazda 😊
I’ve just started watching lots of videos on compact SUVs. After this video and reading all the positive comments on the CX5, it has moved ahead of the RAV4 which had been on my short list too. At 68 and considering we keep our vehicles for a long time, I’m thinking this will probably be the last new car we will ever buy so we should go for a fun car with the feel of a luxury car.
@@dianas514 I tested the Rav-4 5 times in a couple of months. It is noisy, slow, seems to feel like it’s struggling and unrefined. I wanted to like it but didn’t like the drive at all. So I went to the Venza and I liked it more but it’s still a little noisy and used a CVT which isn’t fun at all but at least it helps with better gas mileage. I had owned and loved 4 Mazda’s that my parents passed down to me. I went over to Mazda and drive the CX-5 and instantly knew it was the best feeling and best Japan built and refined crossover. I bought a white one with white leather- it’s the Grand Touring with premium package which has goodies like heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, heated windshield, heated back seats, heads up display, and much more. I paid $32,000. I bought it on June 29th. I have 3500 miles on it today. I love it!! I’m averaging 26 mpg city and 32-35 highway which I’m fine with. There is plenty of front seat room for tall people. The back seat is a little tighter for 3 tall people. 2 can be okay but it’s not the biggest crossed if you want to haul people. I am single and don’t haul anyone so the back seat is just a place for me to throw my bags and crap. The 6-speed automatic is wonderful and smooth: I have wonderful bright LED headlights that swivel when you turn the steering wheel left or tight. The sound system is clear and crisp with plenty of bass. I have a sliding standard size moonroof. There is a subclass holder. The door pockets are some of the better size ones. The glove box does not have a light which is weird but there are bright overhead (map) lights that provide light. I would recommend the Volkswagen Tiguan if you want a comfortable and more smooth ride. Mazda leans sporty. Seats on Tiguan have more bolstering which is nice. And the cargo area and 2nd row seating is much larger if those are important factors for you. The Tiguan has a turbo engine in it. The gas mileage is similar and the transmission has 8 gears. Both are excellent offerings but I’m only 25 and wanted the smaller and sportier driving Mazda. Japanese usually lasts more years with less issues than German and since I read that you may keep this car 10 years or something that’s a factor that puts Mazda in the winning category by the vast majority of mechanics opinions

I’ve got both a touch screen and a console based scroll wheel for the infotainment system. Much prefer the scroll wheel since it allows me to make selections w/o looking away from the road. Didn’t think much of it at first, but it’s a real deal maker/breaker for me.
I like the controls on the console, also. They're safer and more comfortable to use than a touchscreen. The 2021 Mazdas did away with the touchscreen completely.

@@moeanthony9308 I guess it depends on the customer. I find plenty of room for four adults. Five in short trips in the CX-5. But then again, space is subjective. The 3rd generation RAV4 had a huge backseat. It was shortened after.
The CX-5 has a better interior, exterior, and way better performance. Not to mention Mazda just beat Toyota in Consumer Reports’ reliability rankings. The RAV is slightly larger 🥴 If you’re willing to give up the four most important characteristics of a vehicle for something big go get a minivan.
Toyota and Lexus still hold the number 2 and 3 positions, not to mention its the first time in 15 years that the Toyota corporation hasn't held the #1 position. Toyota still has a much better reputation for reliability than any other car brand. As for interior and exterior appearance, they're both good looking cars, just depends on preference.
@@simply_nick and if Mazda is now ahead of Toyota they clearly produce reliable vehicles as well. To me the CX-5 is a better looking, reliable vehicle with way better performance. I own the Turbo that does 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and handles better than anything in the class. Where Mazda has genuine leather, real wood and soft-touch surfaces, Toyota has cheap plastic. Again, if you’d give up a better looking vehicle with far better performance in favour of a little extra cargo space you may be happier in a minivan. Think about it.
@@thejollyrancher6713 I'm not saying Mazda doesn't make good vehicles, I like their cars, but there's also more to it than good looks and performance. The Rav4 offers 2 different hybrid drive trains on top of the base 4 cylinder. The Rav4 is also the only SUV that has hybrids more powerful than the non hybrid variants. The Rav4 Prime having better 0-60 than the new Supra. They also offer more off-road friendly options. In the end it all comes down to what you need, but I don't think this video is really a fair comparison. @@thejollyrancher6713 and you are entitled to your opinion, but the sales figures show that a lot more people want the Rav4 over the CX-5. As for the battery thing, I do think full electric cars are a lot worse in that matter. Not to mention that in the life span of electric, hybrid, and non-hybrid vehicles, the non-hybrids statistically produce more emissions, regardless of the hazardous materials used in lithium based batteries. Current battery technology is not efficient in cold climates, but numerous companies are working on solid state batteries (Toyota included) which are more energy dense and shouldn't be as affected by the cold due to not having a liquid core.

I owned a RAV4 and I got 32mpg. I bought a Mazda CX-5 3 months ago. I get almost 32 mpg. The RAV4 is sluggish. My Mazda is more superior in many ways. One has to own the two in order to really be able to compare the two.
The disadvantages of cx-5 are cramped rear seats. Its very difficult to move from one seat to other in the rear.Cargo also less, which can be adjusted. This cramped space if mazda could improve,it will be the best selling
Why do you need to move from one seat to another? Are you playing Musical Chairs? Buy a CX-9 if you need more room. Why ruin the CX-5 because of a couple of inches?

Shopping this category. My town only has a Toyota, Chevy and Ford dealer. The nearest Mazda dealers are 25 and 35 miles away. While that's not a huge difference, if you needed service its a p.i.t.a. to have to sit around the dealership waiting on your car, rent a car or get a ride from someone. With the local dealership there's no hassle - their courtesy van will take you back and forth. That's the ONLY reason I would personally choose a RAV4. Even with that constraint I'm still considering the Mazda.
You'll be betting on which car is less reliable... Mazda or Toyota. Consumer Reports says, Mazda is more reliable... usnews.com/news/us/articles/2020-11-19/mazda-no-1-in-consumer-reports-2020-auto-reliability-survey
The ugliness of the Toyota alone is a total turn off for me. The Mazda not only looks good, it also drives a lot better. I drove both and then bought the Mazda without hesitation.
@@saadtheman1 While I agree Toyota's are reliable, Mazdas are incredibly reliable too- Consumer Reports just ranked Mazda above Toyota in terms of reliablity. I will have to see, my parents had a 2009 Mazda CX-9 and only ever had one issue with it-the trunk release, but they just bought a 2021 Toyota Venza for better fuel economy. Personally, while I really like the look and features of the new Venza, I like the value proposition of Mazda as you are getting German luxury for a Japanese price and the styling is still way on point!
Toyota also have another set of fuel injectors before the intake valves to keep them clean from buildup. A common problem with direct injected engines.
I watched these guys reviews on the CX5 turbo, going back several years. Bought a 2021 CX5 turbo , Signature... it's sitting in the Baltimore port. 😄. I've still not driven one. Bought it sight unseen.
You will love it, I've been in one once before, and I really wish I bought it. Unfortunately I decided to go for a used Sienna instead to save some cash, but in the end, I really dont think it was worth it over the CX-5.
Wow... I booked mine but have to wait till end of march... mine is not even in the assembly line yet... lol... hopefully, end of march... enjoy your new ride... mate
Note that decibels are not linear in measurement. They are logarithmic. For example, an increase in 3db by an audio system would require twice the amount of power. So, the Mazda should have been awarded a point for this.
These were the two vehicles we chose from. I like them both so it came down to two things.....how much carrying space and gas mileage therefore the Rav4. Its a shame that we can't combine the best features of both into one vehicle....oh well dreaming on.
The Rav4 uses either the problematic 8 speed automatic transmission, or the fragile CVT transmission.. There's nothing I want in my Mazda CX-5 that the Toyotas have.

Reliability for mazda?
Any issues regarding the paint? I heard they put it low quality paint on these?
I love my 2020 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve.
Mazda is the best
We just bought the CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve and absolutely love it. These vehicles are WAY underrated.
I bought a new Rav 4 hybrid XSE and love it, but admit that if not insisting on a hybrid, I'd be driving a CX5
Just bought a 2021 cx5 GT, it seemed like such an absurdly good deal I couldn’t entertain another vehicle
Hi, I am thinking of buying a 2021 Subaru Outback or a Mazda CX-5, having trouble deciding, any input on the highway drive comparing
Thanks so much for your answer! Have a great day!
The CX-5 is not a sub-compact... it's a compact SUV. The CX-30 is a sub-compact SUV, though.
What state are you in?
THE CX5 HAS THE EXPENSIVE APPEAL OF JAGUAR.......RAV4 HAS TRANSFORMER APPEAL
Same opinion here
Agree Toyota front grill starting from 2012 began to look like transformer .
Most distinct , Lexus looks the most transformer in design than others .
Lexus did not sell well sv
Toyota (and Lexus) styling is distinctive and definitely comes from the Transformers team. Mazda is elegant by comparison.

I test drove both and the CX5 is a lot more fun to drive, and the CX5 looks soooo much better. I went with the CX5.
I do want the turbo but would like to save the almost $10k entry fee as well. Thanks for the input!
Mazda seems to have advantages in the options for the engine. Cabin quietness should be intensely weighed in this segment.
This was a fair and comprehensive evaluation. I'm choosing the Mazda CX-5. Thank you Car Confections!
Glad you enjoyed the comparison and glad we could help!
I got 2018 CX5 GT, no regrets, no issues 60 k miles. Drives amazing and fuel economy just awesome.

I think the CX-5 is better. But the sales for the Mazda don’t reflect the over all better value compared to the Rav4
150k a year...it's only in its 2nd gen. Rav4 has been around for quite some time now. Mazda is making gains, slowly but surely.

Mazda has been shown by consumer reports to be the most reliable brand.
Go Mazda!

I really like my Mazda CX-5 , but to be honest I still can’t take my eye off while I saw RAV4 on the road .
Agreed. I like the sportier look of the RAV4. But I did love the Mazda interior when I rented it
Both are excellent choices
The CX-5 actually deserves an extra .5 points for being quieter. Decibels are logarithmic, therefore the noise level of 57.8 dB in the RAV4 is much more than 5% higher than the 55.2 in the CX-5. For example, if you consider sound intensity of the RAV4 at 4 feet away, the CX-5 would be at 3 feet to hear the same sound intensity as the RAV4.
Great explanation
2.6 dB means almost double the noise power not 5% higher :)
3 dB is exactly 2x the noise power or 1.4x the noise level
This means that thr Mazda is significantly quieter than the Toyota while much faster at the same time, but probably the Rav4 gets somewhat better MPG
If your going to compare these two the Mazda should be non turbo. A better comparison would be the cx5 turbo to rav4 hybrid
There are several different Toyota Rav4 Hybrids... which one? And there are different CX-5s with a turbo.
Just bought the Carbon edition AWD Turbo. So far I 💙💙💙💙💙 it!

I have been going back and forth between these 2 vehicles.
@God_Laughs _At_Atheists
You are right about the turbo not having cylinder deactivation.
You know what else has a lot of cargo volume and low rear access? A minivan.

Thanks for this. I'm an owner of a 2019 CX-5 which I love. If for whatever reason I had to buy a new one... I'm not sure I would buy a CX-5.
I had a CX-3, and wanted to upgrade to a bigger car this year. I was considering a Subaru Forester, Rav4, and a CX-5. I initially wanted the Rav4 the most, but I ended up staying with Mazda and getting the CX-5. I did get the Carbon Edition though, which I ordered and waited a while for.
Congrats on your purchase, very good choice indeed!
That Mazda is a work of art
Nice choice on the Carbon Edition! 👍👍

So the RAV4 transmission is unreal?
And the RAV4 has a real 8 speed transmission.
CR likes the CX5 (and the Outback). I would buy the turbo CX5 if I were in the market.
I see a lot of comments about much better driving experience with Mazda however what about long term reliability and cost of ownership of them. I keep cars for at least 15 years and know Toyotas can easily do that but can find nothing on Mazdas Reliability over same time frame.
I’ve owned my 2013 Mazda5 minivan for 8 years now. Not one issue. Served well on long and cross country road trips.

Both are great vehicles.
It's a matter of preference , I chose the Mazda.
Toyota just builds incredible cars and the feeling of safety and confidence in the longevity and durability in their products makes it impossible to gof for the Mazda at all
The cx-5 is the highest rated small suv for safety. I believe 9.9 out of 10
Been a loyal Toyota driver for 35 years.
I just bought a new CX-5 in June! Love it !
Smart woman! I love my new CX-5 and my 2016 Mazda 3
@@2004cyrus Thank you soooo much for your reply!! In addition to our '99 Tahoe we have a '07 Chevy Express Van we bought new. It only has 66K miles. It's a 3/4 ton so if we need to haul anything at all we have that. Since we have a Tahoe and the van and had Blazers back in the 70s and 80s and a Camaro in the 2000s I looked at the Trailblazer. Very disappointed. Seats were uncomfortable, didn't have a nice ride and seemed cheaply put together. I also had a '99 VW Bug that I initially loved but it seemed every time I turned around something else went wrong with it mechanically. Reached a point where I said enough is enough. Almost traded it in on a Passat but our friends had nothing but problems. I like the look of the Tiguan but have concerns about VWs. Greatly appreciate your input. Thanks again for taking the time to reply! Sounds like the CX5 is the car for me.
We considered the CX5 however with its 6 speed automatic, lower fuel economy and direct injection carbon build up possibility, it places the Mazda CX5 in a pretty sever handicap over the Rav 4 for us.
How would you know what you are selecting without looking at the screen?
@@wgemini4422 It's easier to see in your peripherals, but when you do take your eyes off the road it is for way less time than with a touchscreen. I absolutely love my scroll wheel! It also becomes second nature!
Agreed, I found I wasn’t sacrificing anything without using the touchscreen. I found it was safer on highways because you aren’t having to spend so much time focusing on it, and can look up when you want.
@@AllCentaur You are not suppose to touch either on highways.
Test drove both. Went with Mazda for its driving dynamics and quiet interior. Oh and I didn’t want a turbo.
What is turbo ? And what do you mean by the driving dynamics?
I have the 2021 RAV4 as a company car and we bought our son a 2021 CX-5 as a graduation present. The CX-5 is much nicer to drive.
Exterior i would choose the rav4 because it looks a bit more aggressive. But the interior in the cx5 is much more luxurious
Love my 2018 Cx-5 GT (non turbo) Fun to drive and never any problems...go Mazda...

Mazda vehicles are so underrated. I just got y 2022 CX5 GT Premium plus. I'm so happy with this car, all the technology is a great value, the head up display it's a very cool feature that increase safety while driving making you aware of the vehicles n your blind spot without even looking at the side mirrors or turning your head over your shoulder.
The CX-5 also has a heated steering wheel but the heads-up display is definitely the biggest selling point for me!
I really like my Rav4 Hybrid and have no regret, but admit the HUD would be a great feature you can't get on a Toyota.
I’ve just got one and I must admit the HUD is my favourite thing, I was amazed at the quality of the colour image and just how much information it can display.
I like the rav4. it is a great car. But for me, the cx-5 or the cr-v would be better
The interior quality, fit and finish, and drive is second to none in this class
Cx5 doesn't offer the space.
@@winstonwinston3487 true. Mazda is such a small company, it can't compete in advertising

The RAV is slightly larger 🥴
If you’re willing to give up the four most important characteristics of a vehicle for something big go get a minivan.
As for Mazda just beating Toyota, they've both been in the top 3 for a while and Toyota's manufacturing methods are what have kept Toyota and Lexus there for the past 15 years and will continue to keep them in the top 3.
@@simply_nick not everybody wants a hybrid. I don’t. I live in Canada and batteries and -30°C weather don’t mix. Not to mention battery production is a filthy process that is decimating jungles worldwide.
I’m just saying if cargo area is more important to you (or anybody else) than looks and performance, you should seriously consider a minivan.
I think it’s a fair statement. The RAV4 is roughly as appealing to me as a Dodge Caravan.
@@thejollyrancher6713 and you are entitled to your opinion, but the sales figures show that a lot more people want the Rav4 over the CX-5.
As for the battery thing, I do think full electric cars are a lot worse in that matter. And regardless, vehicles are only 5% of products using lithium ion batteries with laptops being 41% and phones being 24% of those products. Not to mention that in the life span of electric, hybrid, and non-hybrid vehicles, the non-hybrids statistically produce more emissions, regardless of the hazardous materials used in lithium based batteries. Current battery technology is not efficient in cold climates, but numerous companies are working on solid state batteries (Toyota included) which are more energy dense and shouldn't be as affected by the cold due to not having a liquid core.
bought cx5 touring brand new, 2016.5 (navigation and heated seats) I love this vehicle, however my only and big complaint is this mazda has no zoom zoom. on a 2 lane, I am very hesitant to pass anyone going 50mph. make sure you have plenty of room because this thing has 0 balls. currently waiting on delivery of a rav4 hybrid XLE that has almost 40 more HP. 175hp on the mazda cx5 vs 219HP on the rav4 hybrid.
I owned a RAV4 and I got 32mpg. I bought a Mazda CX-5 3 months ago. I get almost 32 mpg. The RAV4 is sluggish. My Mazda is more superior in many ways. One has to own the two in order to really be able to compare the two.
Wife just bought 2021 Mazda cx5.... and she loves it !
The disadvantages of cx-5 are cramped rear seats. Its very difficult to move from one seat to other in the rear.Cargo also less, which can be adjusted. This cramped space if mazda could improve,it will be the best selling
You must very tall. For us average people it’s good.
My Mazda CX-5 easily holds 3 teenagers in the back seat. It's only cramped if you're claustrophobic or tall.
Why do you need to move from one seat to another? Are you playing Musical Chairs? Buy a CX-9 if you need more room. Why ruin the CX-5 because of a couple of inches?
The RAV4 has sooo much room!
Mazda has more rear legroom compared to rav 4. It's has 2 more inches. Make google your friend.
Cx5 is simple yet beautiful
The Rav 4 Trd Off road can tow 3000 lbs it has a transmission cooler line and has a way different trim package Heated and cooled seats Also suspension hill assist. Leather trim interior. Off-road ready . Toyota hands down.
