akuofo addo may be telling the truth when he said that the US did not ask for a military base. but then, why would the US need to ask for a military base when ghana is offering to sign an agreement that gives them the right to set up a military base in ghana? ...and ghana has to build the runway for the US military base! ...and the US gets to say where it wants the runway built.
yeah, akuofo addo did "speak the truth"; he just didn't speak the whole truth. akuofo addo was very careful in his choice of words. he did not say that the agreement prohibits establishment of a US military base in ghana; he merely said that the US didn't ask for a military base in ghana.
when someone is careful with their wording, they know exactly what they are saying. that tells me that akuofo addo knows that the agreement does allow the US to establish a military base in ghana.
He will not say who was paying for his election campaign....
@vladimir biruk: that nana akuofo addo was so careful in his wording tells me that he knows that this agreement allows the US to build a military base in ghana. i think that during the discussions the US threatened to withhold further aid money to ghana if ghana did not proceed with this agreement. so for akuofo addo, this was a political calculation; a withholding of US military aid would hurt ghana's economy since ghana depends on foreign aid money. he figured that if this happened, the opposition party would take political advantage of an economic downturn. so in the interest of holding on to political party, he went ahead with this agreement.
so it all, in my view, comes down to a political calculation by nana akuofo addo, to lock ghana into a perpetual agreement with the US in the hope that he can hold on to 4 more years of political power. that's why i now hold akuofo addo in such contempt.
From his biography : - " ... Akufo-Addo worked with the Paris office of the U.S. law firm Coudert Brothers. In 1979..." This "firm"-" Coudert partners dealt with financiers, presidents, and ambassadors in settling cases of corporate ownership worldwide, acting as confidential facilitators of Allied arms buying in World War I, and as interventionist supporters in World War II." It works for trans- international corporations .... It is the same like in Cote d Ivoire French military base removed president Gbagbo and put there puppet Ouattara from Paris .who (and his family ) has citizenship of France . According the constitution Ouattara had no right to be president of Cote d Ivoire . but Cote d Ivoire's constitution is NOTHING for french president and his commandos... Africa is still financial -economical colony and metropolies remove independent presidents in Africa using money or bring "rebels " from Mali to Cote d Ivoire . It is very easy if there is a miltary base.. Foreigners from metropolies does not pay taxes in Africa still !!!

Great job Ghana.. many of us in the diaspora had a heart sinking moment when he news of a military base on Ghana soil. But thank God you did not and will not sell out. We have the talent to make Africa a great continent and Ghana a prosperous country and we don't need Europeans. But have you read the actual agreement before you breathe a sigh of relief? Remember hes a politician.
It's true that he is a politician but we must not group them all into the same box. Not all leaders are corrupt and selfish. We must use our discretion and judge them carefully.
At this crucial point of our development, it would be a tragic mistake to put it very mildly, to not take stock of past and recent history across the continent of Africa and in Ghana in particular. Ignoring the governing patterns of our political leaders which have predominantly been the tendency to not miss an opportunity to sell us short. Trusting blindly or being swayed by a politician’s ability to send his audience into a hypnosis through his impressive command of language, without doing an independent research on the subject matter with the very little information that we have been privy to, I would respectfully say, is not very wise at this point.
Evaluating all of the decisions the president makes and how he engages with the international governments would be a more viable approach instead of gambling with the sentiments of not all leaders being corrupt and selfish. The majority of leaders on African soil have sold their sovereignty and exposed their people to exploitation with impunity. Yes, there have been a handful of good leaders but exception is certainly not the rule. We can not afford to be reactive after damages that sets us back 100yrs whiles the rest of the world is already light-years ahead of us. We must be proactive and send a message to the ruling elite, no matter the political party, that we are paying attention to their every move and we wont allow them to profit at our expense and that we wont allow ourselves to be susceptible to their manipulations.
